How did Kelsie get the screws that were coming from under the stairs out? Also my thoughts: stain the railing to match the stair treads, use the chandelier you intended to originally but get a longer chain and hook it to be off-center because even without a chandelier, that light being in the middle of the railing looks so odd. If you ever do glass in your own door again, use glazier points to hold the glass in! I do stained glass as my full time gig, and you should never trust just silicone to hold in big pieces of glass without nailing in trim either. Hopefully it goes well, but you can definitely nail it in with finishing nails after the fact!

- The conversation with Milo was the best part, ngl 😂 - I'm with Eliott on this one, it's a dock on water - Love the hook rail hack, looks great - A different color for the raisers sounds good! The white looks different from the baseboards white, even though I'm sure it's the same color. The baseboards look warmer.
@AnnekeOosterink2 ай бұрын
Yeah, the same colour can look very differently if the angle is different. Especially white, since that reflects the colour of the light so much. A slightly different angle of light and how the shade falls changes the colour a lot.

Also looove the hidden appliances - does the heat output not cause any issues? I’ve wondered about doing that with my coffee maker but wonder about the base of the cabinet above. Alsooo I’m with Elliot, it’s a dock on water🙃 But could easily pass as both 😉 P.s. mad props for normalizing not spending on everything you want and prioritizing a budget when unforeseen issues come up. I think Elliot is right, that it's a floating dock, but I also thought it was an above ground pool at first glance! It's a shame that light didn't work, because it's sooooo gorgeous! I love how it's antique, but it's not overly ornate in the metal work. Could you possibly remove a couple of links of the chain to hang it higher so Elliot doesn't jump under it and bump his head? Other than that, maybe some kind of glass/crystal globe style of light that has a more antiquey feel and maybe goes with the new glass in the media room door? Or, like, an antique 3-bulb ceiling light? I'm sad the light didn't just work right away! But your stairs look AMAZING!! And I like the coat and bag rails.

A lot of the homes where my mom lived had the same issue with basements getting water. It was the roots from the trees getting into the piping. So that might be your problem too. It cost about $5000 to have it fixed. Her yard was a huge mess. This was in Oregon. It might be because of the piping they used.

Kelsey, I just did a Google search with ornate lights that don’t hang down much. You should have seen the plethora of cool stuff. If your light can’t hang down, many of these crawl along the ceiling or spread out in other ways. They were so different and interesting.

Oh I was really looking forward to the ceiling medallion! You might be able to put any pendant lighting above the stairs if you are ok with a cord running from the junction box. You might even be able to use the medallion to hide the cord. Would also love a pop of color, perhaps a cool accent wall? Maybe sage green paint or a wallpaper. The railing and the handrail could be the same wood tone as the staircase, so that it cohesive from both floors

As someone who spent weeks and weeks working on stairs, I feel you when you sighed at the stairs 😅 Our stairs were carpeted at some point, with lots of glue and nothing we did got rid of it, so we ended up having to put on those little half moon steps of carpet. I don't love them, but because our stairs makes a weird bend, a runner would have to be custom. That was going to cost thousands and just not an option (not in our budget, perhaps in a few years when the rest of the house is done), but the glue still needed to be covered. We did do a fun colour, because I love colour. The stairs were kind of beige-ish yellowish cream before (and dark blue and dusty pink and brick red from the previous owner) so we decided to take the yellow and run with it. Our stairs are bright yellow right now. As in, the yellow of turmeric, on the golden yellow end of the spectrum, and honestly? I love it. All the art in the stairwell is in black and white, the heating cover is white, the giant mirror is black, the design vase my mother gifted me is black glass, so a giant pop of colour works in the space. It's also a fairly dark space, and the light that does reach it is fairly cold, so a bright warm colour felt warranted. 😊 The job did become so much bigger than it was at first though, because the stairs were going to be painted we had to also paint all the other wood in the area, as it's all connected, and was all the cream before. The underside of the attic stairs needed to be painted as well, and the door frame at the top of the stairs too. We had to remove all the art from the walls, which led us to some cracks and dents in the wall that I filled in, but that meant the wall needed to be painted... So you know, endlessly expanding task... I'm glad it's all done now, but for us it wasn't the last job on the list sadly. We've got a kitchen, a bathroom, an attic, and a garden that aren't unusable but need to be updated or even completely renovated in case of the bathroom. So I'm looking forward to be able to say that I'm working on the last space in my home. 😁

For the risers, I think it would look really good *and* cohesive if you painted a mock-pattern identical to the tile you put in the hallway. I love the long mirror having a striped frame and the Ikea hack for hanging coats and other items up. You made a dull space pop. I love the way you've brought the house together. The media room door is my fave too. The stain colour is perfect and it looks great on the stairs too. Although electricity is a difficult thing to deal with, I think the effort to move the electrical box is a smart idea. Swagging it until you can is a good temporary fix, but will you end up fixing it in the end? The same with the closet doors - could you sand a long edge of the doors to get them to fit right? Although I hate doing these things too, it's always an extra feeling of satisfaction to do it right. It's up to you, no judgement.

The mirror makeover is awesome! For the stairs - I'd keep them white. Making them darker would compete with other dark woody colours in the space, and dark would make the space feel smaller.

Since you asked: 1. Above ground pool has my vote. That was my first though 2. Lamp: a. paint stripes on the shade similar to those on the mirror. b. remove a few links from the vintage hanging lamp to allow clearance between the lamp and your and your friends noggins😂. c. Buy a new lamp, donate the original, and find a new location for the vintage lamp. It is gorgeous. 3. loved the glass in the door. perfect ❤

Oh my goodness EVERYTHING THAT COULD GO WRONG DID 😭 Honestly good on you for pushing through. I think a light fixture that you can like drape and hang more centered over the stairs would be ideal. Picturing a giant globe light kinda more Becky’s style though 🙈

Thank you for posting the cursed makeover! Because I know I've had at least 1 a year and I'm sure I'm not alone. I feel your frustration but I've always found the makeover AFTER the cursed makeover, goes faster and better than you planned for. Oh! I think you should paint the risers the same 2 colours as your mirror frame.

1. It's a dock 2. Keep the risers white 3. That door is amazing 🤩🤩🤩 100/10

23:47 Thank you so much for talking about safety. Not enough KZbinrs do this. I had nooo idea about the stain rags either until the last year or so. Thankfully I never throw my rags out so they always end up drying fully between uses, but if I did throw any out, I definitely would have just tossed them straight in the trash 😬

A. That’s for sure an above ground pool. B. Huge round shallow flush mount drum pendant for stairway light. C. 100% accent color on the risers. Suggesting a reconsideration of some kind of pattern as I think, the black-and-white subtlety of the entryway can handle it.

It’s crazy that’s it’s been 5 years since this started, it feels like that’s so long. Also I love the future making home episode ideas (especially the entire “competed” house tour lol)

So we are currently in our 3rd home. Had the same problem in our second home of the junction box being off center in the ceiling. The first one was way off center from the island I built. The second one was off center from the kitchen table. I purchased the same kind of dome light, with a long chain. I put a cup hook into the ceiling stud to center the light. Wired, attached top piece to ceiling, let several links hang bit before putting a link through the cup hook and the lamp came down to the correct height over the island and the table centered! It looks great centered. The swoop of links is fine. I have to see things centered!

Yes on the darker riser! And I feel like I’ve seen some great lighting options from AGater that would work in your hallway :) Amazing job on the door btw 👌🏻
