Zach’s right about the CRT stuff, 2D sprite art looks drastically better but even 3D games are improved by playing on the TVs they were designed for. The way interlacing works kind of acts as a natural anti-aliasing. Plus playing something on a screen supporting it’s native resolution always looks good. The colors really pop especially in GTA VC, modern LCDs tend to have pretty shit contrast & black levels.

The shadows used to tick in GTA IV as well IIRC, but definitely in Just Cause 2. It allows for the preprocessing of static geometry into their shadows at certain times of day, avoiding the need to calculate them real-time. Some games do this, but also interpolate between the different shadows, making it look almost as if they were real-time. But Chris is right, if there's an interpolation at all, why not space out the frames evenly between the shadow snapshots?

Chris is pretty spot on about the general variety of tasks in older GTAs. The only key difference was that you could do them in really bizarre ways to get your fun and the game wouldn't fail you for it like modern GTAs.

The first (as far as I know) remotely controlled vehicle was La Torpille "Crocodile" Schneider (the Schneider "Crocodile" Torpedo) a French remotely controlled explosive carrier invented in 1915 to destroy obstacles like barbed wires and enemy positions like MG nests. So regarding flying remotely controlled vehicles imo the main issue wasn't really the whole engine part but most likely having the radio technology to be able to get rid of the cable linking the vehicle to the remote.
