I know someone who works at rockstar doing the audio for these games. They spent a year remastering the sound effects and music to sound amazing only for the company to run it through a compressor at the end of it all. The team was pissed.

I think the biggest problem with the graphics in the remake is that the original games were using the limited technology they had at the time to make something realistic and futuristic. But, now that we live in the future with unlimited technology, the remakes want to re-create the past. The ambition to do something more is gone and it sucks any potential charm out. And this is coming from someone who doesn't necessarily like "realistic" graphics.

I think they missed the mark on that one. Vice City wasn't really made to be realistic, it definitely has somewhat stylised proportions and facial features. San Andreas actually went for a more realistic look and it was on the same hardware. It looks the worse by far with the remake. Not to say the other two actually look good, of course.

Driver 3 will forever stay in my memories as the most terrifying game I've ever played... I have this weird phobia where I absolutely panic over different kinds of graphics glitches, the worst kind being falling through the ground. And I'm not exagerrating when I say "panic"...the suprising sight of my character falling into a skybox void get's me to fear my monitor for as long as I'm not sure it's gone from my screen. San Andreas made me discover that phobia but in the years I played it I only encountered three instances of where the game scared me shitless...and then there was Driver 3. I never encountered a triple A open world game where it was so easy to get out of bounds and where there are so many meshes without collision. Simple things like climbing on a car to get ontop of a garage, at least make me fall through the roof immedietly and not have 3 steps worth of collision only to make me feel secure and *then* make me fall through it. Like as if the jumpscares weren't bad enough the game became a psychological tormentor aswell and actually evolved my phobia to the stage where from then on I started anticipating these moments (most often without anything actually happening) The whole horror genre doesn't phase me in the slightest, so much so that horror movies and games are just boring to me, but Driver 3 is my existing nightmare. I just wanted to share this because I had one friend in my lifetime who also had that phobia but literally nobody else as far as I know and I didn't even find anything about it on google.

Huh, now you mention it I did get a minor existential crisis when I was a kid and glitched a bus through the bottom of an off-ramp in midtown madness 2. The featureless gray ground and the backs of buildings being 2d cutouts seemed quite creepy at the time, especially as the gray platform had a cutoff where it just fell away into the skybox.

Game glitches fucking terrify me. Character models' faces not loading correctly so it's just their eyes and teeth showing or buildings shifting in and out of view, etc, it's scary man.

And it was much worse back in the PS2 era and earlier because the skyboxes were just one colour without any atmosphere and thus no depth perception. I still get quite anxious in like GTA 5 for example but it's mostly just the initial suprise jumpscare and I squint at the screen until my character spawns on the terrain again. San Andreas' skybox was either this bright blue or dark orange and my character/car was floating in the middle...but the worst instance was when I drove a faggio into the gate of a parking lot which didn't break and instead pushed me into the ground. It happened so fast and I remember the camera instantly facing downwards zooming into the ugly grey road texture for like 0.1 second and passing through it to reveal CJ flaying his arms in this blackish brown void. The color felt so thick around him that it looked like I was inside of it. San Andreas was just too damn good so unlike Driver 3 I couldn't never touch it again, but I was destroyed and done for the day. It's funny that in my whole life so far this is literally my only trigger to feeling such primal uncontrollable fear...it makes me feel for people with severe phobias of more common things like spiders or slugs.

Fun fact: The guy hanging on the meat hook in the meat closet is actually meant to be Charlie Jolson, who's the main antagonist of "The Getaway" which also came out in 2002. There was also a big rivalry between Team Soho and Rockstar at the time of release, so Jolson's body is a little dig/Easter egg that not very many people know about

10:14 To my knowledge from when I played it as a kid there wasn't a line but you could waypoint on the map a pink cross icon that then draws a line to where it is. So it had the feature but it was manually activated only for the player waypoint. GTA:SA was the first to use the automatic objective waypoint guidelines. Which makes sense that they'd retroactively add it to the GTA3 and VC remasters as they "worked on them" all at the same time.

No, the original definitely didn't have the little Google Maps style route planner on the mini map, just the icon. It's really the one and only objectively bad thing they added in later games I think. My problem with it is that it keeps your eyes looking in the corner of the screen for like 90% of the time, and it's one of the reasons I remember the layout of every area in SA so much better than V, even though V absolutely has more details and unique areas compared to some of the more copy-paste looking alleys and highways in SA. Still, I know where just about every major road in SA leads and I know all the shortcuts (and I've played both games for a long time); the lack of a line forces you to plan your routes on the spot by looking around, while in V most of the navigation is just dodging traffic. For a game all about driving around a big open world, having the map draw the path for you just discourages you from actually memorizing everything. Of course, you can always turn it off, thankfully.

This might have already been said in the comment section already but the reason why you want to have a very loud bike is so that way other cars are aware that you are near them. That way if you are in their blind spot they can still hear you

Funniest thing about revisiting these old games is stuff like Tomar realising how bad running people over used to be. This generation of GTA is good, no question, but there's definitely a level of rose-colour to the reminiscence.

Also his assertion that Rockstar was going for realism back then, and only veered towards slightly stylized graphics for the remasters. Does he not remember the cartoonish gargoyle creatures from the box art and loading screens? The games were always kind of goofy.

Grand Theft Auto never really went for realism in any game before GTAV, not visually. There’s a reason they use hard outline comic book cartoon aesthetics to promote the games, and it’s because they couldn’t do convincingly real human renders in-engine while also running all the detailed world simulation stuff, so they didn’t do anything realistic looking until GTAV, where the hardware, the engine and their team’s graphic design talent was finally all there. GTA looks pretty good these days, but it never looked anything resembling “realistic” until last decade.

I remember the Timmy guy from driv3r, I wasn’t allowed to play GTA as a kid but somehow driv3r was ok, but he was in that mansion with the m16 full auto, if you cheezed it and snuck in and shot him in the head like 20 times with the piston from the stairs you could kill him and get his gun which ripped lmao
