Nothing beats going balls deep into learning your problems and going DYI. I resonate so much with what you said about doing the acoustics yourself. It's been a pleasure to watch your journey with this. There's the saying 'how you do one thing is how you do everything'. Being so detailed in what you with your music production, i can't imagine you doing it any other way when making your new studio. well done dude!

Did you try super gluing a Q-tip to it and pulling it out? Then you can lightly sand off the extra cotton / glue that is still there once the cap is out and back in place. It has worked for me in the past.

Hey Eric, I'm really enjoying your videos! I've got a couple of quick questions for you. Firstly, I'm curious about your thoughts on audio converters, particularly the transition from mid-grade (like UAD) to higher-grade (such as Prism or Merging). What are the advantages of upgrading, and do you think it's worth the investment? Also, regarding sample rates, is there a noticeable improvement in working at 96k? I imagine you might have covered these topics before in your videos; if so, could you point me in the right direction? Thanks a bunch!

Have you ever heard Geithain monitors? It was interesting to hear your thoughts on 2 and 3 way speakers and the sweet spot. I built my own 3 way coaxial monitors with a soft dome midrange and tweeter mounted in front of a 12" sub that are all controlled by a digital crossover. They had some design issues to get through but once I worked out the kinks the sweet spot is everywhere. The Geithain 901 is a similar design and the consensus about sweet spot/phasing/imaging seems to be the same

QQ- Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom on this journey to your dream studio. I myself also moved east to Nova Scotia and am converting a barn into a studio. I'm currently trying to figure the best solution for a video system to connect the room (I also have chosen to not use glass) You mentioned that you will basically use rolling video communication systems. Could you elaborate a bit on how these will work? Are they ethernet cameras that connect to a hub then send multiple splits of HDMI to the screens? Or is there a all in one solution you have found. Cheers!!

Another great episode once again with some good tips on tools i'm using to design my guitar amp ISO cabinet and so far 100W amp sounds pretty good through it. And get this : my condo neiboughs can't hear a thing. Nothing the magnitude of your studio but it's all about finding solutions to problem being presented to us. Keep up the good work Eric. Cheers!

Hey Eric! Just wanted to get a little insight on how you treated the backup vocals on Futureland. Specifically the "La La La" sections. It almost sounds like they are reamped. Also that album is one of my favorite albums of all time! You guys did such an amazing job. Thanks!

Hi E, thanx for all your knowledge sharing! Why didn't you soffit mount the speakers in a designed tapered reflection free room and avoid all of the null and sbir stuff? Seems this tube thing has made for a very strange and a bit unnatural mixing environment?

what are your thoughts on the "paper" vs. "fiber" concrete form as tube traps ????
@vidicsferenc1829 ай бұрын
Hi Eric ! I want to ask you that how do you feel about boosting mids or 300hz on rhy distorted electric guitars only on the side tracks ? I mean most records have pretty bright treble heavy guitars mainly boosted at 2,5k but i feel like they need lots of mids to hit and punch the sides perfectly, i think they are pretty heavy that way. We are mostly told to scoop the mids, cut the mud out but they are lifeless that way. These mids dont hurt anything maybe the toms or some bgr vocals but i pretty much prefer this sound compared to the "this is how you do it" way.

The isothermal theory is that you’re supposed to use fluffy batt insulation which acts as a heat sink that helps cool the compression of waveforms faster allowing for longer waves to travel in. It’s also supposed to be a certain weight per volume based on the internal dimensions of the tube. Heard it still might not make a huge difference, but it’s what ASC claims and is worth measuring if you have the time and materials.

Hey Eric :D (Thanks a lot for all those episodes and all the experimentation you're doing !!! It's really helpful) My question : When I mix I sometimes guet very quickly "lost" in the sound, like if my ears got used to what they're hearing very fast and adapts so that it sounds somewhat balanced, which makes it VERY hard to EQ things. It happened that I mixed a song, then come back after a breack where my ears had the chance to reset, and discover that I'm WAY off and everything is either muddy or really bright or scooped like crazy. How do you deal with that ? (especially for long mixing sessions)

For the dented speaker dust cover, I wonder if you could get a new dust cover and then just gently glue the new one over the dented one?
@mesamarshall10 ай бұрын
That's a nice thought, but it would add mass to the moving parts of the speaker, hurting it's performance, and, perhaps more importantly, would make each speaker respond differently from one another.

Air conditioning on would affect the humidity in the room, which "might" make "some" difference?

Are you going to prettify the control room after you have the last sonic pieces finalized, or keep it utility
@mrwev10 ай бұрын
I am in the process of prettifying right now. We'll see how it goes. Making all these tubes look pleasing is a tall order haha!
@studiodude110 ай бұрын
It would save you time to just construct a fabric wall in front of all those tubes rather than wrapping each individually. Or even just fabric draped down from the ceiling? Is there a reason not to do that?
@MiserableEffect10 ай бұрын
Original tube traps do not have any hard shells. There is a video out there of someone making a tube trap with a hard cardboard “concrete tube” and this is incorrect. The tube trap is mostly just rigid fiberglass 705 in pipe fitting form. The hardness is chicken wire which is for structural integrity and maybe a little dampening.

Yeah that is what I had always understood about the ASC ones. Thank you for calrifying.

Hey Eric! I’m in the process of rebuilding my studio gear. I’m looking into a good “town bicycle mic”, but mainly for lead vocals and later on down the road possibly stereo overheads for drums or mono OH/room. Anyway. I’m looking at mics in this order, c12, 251, and u47. Each would be a high end clone, beesneez, Upton or flea. But there is a good 1-2k jump in price for the 251 vs c12. So my question is, if you were a young broke studio owner would you prefer to buy a 251 over a c12? And why? My budget is 1-3k. Thank you! Love the videos and looking forward to the next!
@bonzology32210 ай бұрын
excuse my directness, but I should also say, it occurs to me your barn is in the middle of nowhere, soundproofing up into space matters not, why not just build a soffit'd ceiling WITHOUT drywall, this way you could have a 3' deep bass trap overhead? It seems to me you kinda dropped the ball on this control room design, you couldve designed it any way you needed from the start with that amount of available sq footage, but you hard boundary'd the entire rectangular room keeping the spl in the room where you have to deal with it instead of letting it escape somewhat, or am i missing something?
@stevedoesnt10 ай бұрын
This is exactly how my control room is. 3-4” of rigid fiberglass without any other material below or above it. I designed it this way, but I have nothing to compare it to.

my understanding of quarter wave rule is more about using phase to cancel the wave, not absorption. Absorption is more about impeding the energy of the wave and wave length isn't as much of a factor. its why a 100 hz wave gets stopped better by 6" of concrete than it does poly fill or cotton cloth no matter how thick it is, the concrete attenuates the energy of the wave mechanically.
