Thank you! My neighbor asked me if I knew what the red/purple frilly leaved plant coming up in her garden was. I had no idea and started researching it on the internet. I finally identified it as red shiso....looks just like purple ruffled basil, but, there are fine hairs on the stems. It makes sense now because every site I checked, it was noted that purple ruffled basil is hard to grow and the shiso is coming up all over in her flower garden - definitely not hard to grow! I'll be making this drink for certain!

Thanks for the info. I will be attempting to grow the Britton variety this year (green leaves with red undersides). I have never tasted this variety and wonder if it would make a good juice as well. Have you ever tried making juice with the Britton variety? Thanks.

I am not sure about the Britton variety either but the red shiso also is kind of a greenish leaf with red underside. When you first make the juice, it might be greenish in color, but after adding the citric acid or lemon juice it should brighten up.

I make a jelly with my Aka (red) Shiso. I also give it to my favorite local Izakaya in Lexington Kentucky.
