There are eight teams since 1970 that I think you can make the argument for as being the greatest NBA team of all time. The 1970-1971 Milwaukee Bucks are one of them.

Kareem Started his career in 1969 but the NBA started to record Blocks in 1973. Despite 5 Seasons of his blocks not recorded he still ranked 3rd in Blocks All time.

From kept records wilt was averaging 8.8 during the tail end of his career if we say prime him was averaging 11-12 his career average might been every close to 30/20/10 and there would be no goat debate

@@universalplayz7496 Not from kept records - as the records WERE NOT KEPT at the time. The 8.8 figure was compiled by a retired NBA statistician from a SAMPLE of available videos covering appx. 140 total games throughout Wilt's career (and somewhat biased towards the last half of his career). He does seem to have used every game he could find a complete video for the WHOLE game of. I'm going to state without question that the 8.8 figure is probably highly accurate, with an occasional "miss count" due to poor camera angle on some plays, for the available games that those videos were from. However, we DO NOT KNOW what the real figures were as the stat WAS NOT KEPT 'til after Wilt left the NBA following the 1973 Finals. I'd like to see what the REAL figures would have been, had they been tracked at least starting in 1955, for Wilt and Bill Russell and Nate Thurmond (who lost about HALF of his seasons and MOST of his prime) and Kareem's missing 4 seasons. I *suspect* the real list would be Wilt, fairly closely followed by Bill, then Nate, THEN Kareem, THEN Hakkem, for the Top 5 blockers of all time. For "blocks per game, career", I suspect the top 5 SHOULD be Wilt, Bill, Nate, Mark Eaton (the current "official" #1), Manute Bol (current #2), then Hakeem (current #3) in *6th*.

Oh yeah! I was 13 in 1971 and caught Bucks fever. Glad to see Dandridge getting some love, and great footage of early Kareem. Kareem had to tone it down later in his career to conserve energy, but he could operate in the open court with the best of 'em when he was younger. And Oscar just imposed his will on the opposition.

In the end, this team made Milwaukee a basketball-mad city to the present day. In many ways the whole franchise has lived in this team's shadow for 50 years. @Harry Engel I usually overlook the era a particular team plays in, and considering these Bucks, the decade they played in (which turned out to have the most parity of any NBA decade in terms of champions; I do think the Washington Bullets were the decade's most consistent winner, but it's too bad the franchise hasn't been heard from much from since) was just getting started. Also, they were an expansion team that did face other strong contenders such as the Knicks (already champions) and Lakers (future prolific winners & champions). Smaller league, pretty topsy-turvy era, but they really track for me. A young Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? Wow, and Oscar Robertson still had game left (the final piece for them?). Excellent supporting cast supported by great numbers and a long regular-season-winning streak and decisive playoff run; I definitely like what they did (they were no fluke either, as they ran up to 1974 and that season's finals).

@Harry Engel Oh sure, it's a factor some think about, which is totally understandable. But like you said, the time & place was out of their control, and that team took care of business. The fact that the Bucks held together as a contender until the late 1980s is something I give that franchise credit for as well. They've come back alive again in recent seasons, which I also think is nice.

@Harry Engel Due to the Bucks recent revival, I've thought a lot about this franchise lately. Yeah, that 1980s Bucks team was the real deal, it's just that if they could beat the Sixers in the playoffs, the Celtics would beat them, and vice versa. They were right there though, with three Conference Finals in the decade & 7 consecutive Central Division titles (I normally don't place too much stock in division titles for either the NBA or NHL, but I find that streak impressive). Paul Pressy at point forward, Don Nelson running the show, and a team regarded as smart and competitive. Marques Johnson, Bob Lanier (with something left to contribute), and hey, I think their logo is cute (yeah, I said that:-)!

Completely agree about Dandridge - a scandal he's not in the Hall. A clutch performer on both ends of the court. He practically owned Dr. J. in the playoffs when with the Bullets. Waaay underrated.

@@lloydkline1518 You're right that "shut down" is way too strong, but Dandridge always played him well. For example, in the 1978 ECF (6 games), he outscored the Doctor 22.8 on 50.8% vs. 21.5 on 47.3%. I was present for the home games and Bobby was better in the clutch. The Bullets won the ring that year and Bobby D was the MVP imo, though Unseld won the award.

I think most of us here agree. Only I think Claytons point is that it's not flashy. It doesn't really appeal to the general public who are not especially knowledgeable about basketball. We see see and understand how special it is after seeing generations of players who are not able to pull the skyhook off in the beautiful, and most importantly effective and efficient way that Kareem could.

Thanks for this breakdown. Perhaps the next step would be to analyze the 1972 WCF between the Lakers and Bucks. Los Angeles beat Milwaukee in 6 games en route to a title, but statistics (be it advanced or otherwise) suggest that this may have been the greatest series of all time in terms of matching two historically elite-level teams

People see the end result being a series win in 6 for the Lakers and see it as not very competitive. But the difference between the Lakers winning it in 6 and the Bucks winning it in 6 was a mere four points, the combined margin of games 2 and 3, both won by the Lakers. The Bucks actually outscored the Lakers overall in the series 636 to 622. To me, those two teams were a dead even match, which reflects favorably on the '71 Bucks since they were almost but not quite as good statistically or record-wise in '72 yet they still gave the '72 Lakers all they could handle that year. I believe they were also the team that snapped the Lakers' 33-game winning streak. The '72 Bucks were still one of the better teams statistically in NBA history if you go by point differentials. While the '71 Bucks were #2 all time in point differential at 12.26 (just behind the '72 Lakers at 12.28 and just ahead of the '96 Bulls at 12.24), the '72 Bucks were #5 in point differential at 11.16, which gives them the distinction of the only team in the top 6 that didn't win a title.

Jim McMillan (the top Lakers scorer that season, by a HAIR over West) shot *.368* (.482 average that season) West shot *.313* (.477 average that season) Gail Goodrich shot *.250* (.487 average that season). *17 of 55* from the field, for a trio that USUALLY shot a LOT better than that. The Bucks didn't snap the streak, the Lakers just had a HORRIBLE shooting night for ALL THREE of their main shooters and GAVE the game away - had those three shot their season AVERAGE, the game comes out as about a 2 point Laker WIN.

Those guys had massive egos, and they were beatable. He was a great coach for showing them that in order to make them come together, play as a team, and kick ass.

Personally I wouldn't call the skyhook boring because that is my opinion however I will make an analogy that might make more sense as to what the skyhook is. Dr J and MJ's dunking/ layup shots is like hip hop music. It is swaggy, cool, and suave. However, Kareem's skyhook is like Mozart or Bach. It is elegant, beautiful, and pretty. Most people find classical music boring because of how it lacks "hype" or swag elements like Rap music. However, classical music fans appreciate it for its complexity and the way it is able to finesse listeners. In conclusion, the skyhook and classical music are acquired tastes. They appear boring to the masses but they are like fine aged wine. Dr J and MJ's style of play is for the masses, its brash, cocky, and rebellious. Honestly Clayton I would love to see you do a video highlights of Kareem's skyhook but just have Bach or Mozart playing in the background.

I really hope Eddie Doucette got a patent for the naming of Kareem's hook shot the Sky Hook . The early 1970's was a great time for Bucks fans in Milwaukee, I was about to leave junior high school for high school when Milwaukee beat Earl the pearl Monroe and Wes Unseld led Baltimore Bullets' four straight games for the 1971 NBA title. Those were the days my friend.

Definitely one of the TOP 5 greatest NBA teams of all time! Their style of play pre-dated the heralded Popovich-era Spurs that won 5 titles within a 15-year span and featured HOF-worthy talents such as David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Kawhi Leonard. SUPER fundamentally-sound to the point where they were often seen as "boring" to casual fans and mainstream media "pundits", but it was such beautiful basketball to watch back then. So glad to see Bob Dandridge from that 1970-71 team finally make the HOF this year. He should've been in a long time ago. Elite-level 2-way wing player who did nothing but WIN everywhere he went. 😃

Awesome. IMO, the 1971 Bucks are the most underrated great team in NBA history. Still waiting, however, on Making The Case- 1967 76ers. In 1980, the NBA named the 1967 76ers as the greatest team of all-time. They were followed by the 1972 Lakers and the 1970 Knicks. The 1967 76ers were 46-4 in their first 50 games, which remains an NBA record, and they ended the regular season with a then record 68 wins.

Having watched a bit of Oscar Robinson the fact he played like he did with the rules he played under is always pretty impressive to me. To play that kinetically with how foul happy the refs were I think contextually is as impressive as anything in Basketball history and only makes sense if you actually watch some games and realize what specificity ou had to be with your play not to get a whistle and he still played with such athleticism with that precision is just so cool to me.

Another home run Clay, this is a great point Im 56 started watching in 75-76 grew up in Bmore my uncles played so I always heard of Wes unseld Fred Carter Earl the Pearl Monroe Gus Johnson. Kareem WAS b ball back then. I started watching in 75 I remember the ABA Doc is my fav player. I also started collecting caReds. With all that said my fav team is the 77-87 Sixers so my all-time best team is the 82-83 champion Sixers. These guys (Bucks) deserve a spot in the convo. Bobby D went on to help the 77-78 and the 78-79 Bullets win two straight finals and a chip

Which team was better, the 71 and 21 Bucks? But on another note every team gets breaks on their way to a title but the injury breaks both Milwaukee title teams got is interesting and honestly both the 71 and 21 Bucks as champions have some similarities and this video made me wanna look into them a little more
