Makes sense, half if not the vast majority of the people subscribed likely don’t even have a Steam Deck or other stuff like it and instead just watch the channel for the sake of watching cool tech videos, like how most of the Binging with Babish watchers watch his cooking vids while eating old take-out. So it’s not unlikely that most of these people are suggesting awful ideas simply because they don’t have a Steam deck to confirm that no, it is genuinely not a good idea and the source they got it from was idiotic.

Touch pads aren't useless. Outside of the usefulness for it in games that are more mouse based, as well as FPS games for more mouse-like accuracy without Gyro, both are extremely useful for emulator options while you're in-game, and make desktop mode not suck as much if using it purely as a handheld

@@user-s8jb3qb6yeven if you seriously just *cannot* get used to them while gaming (like me), they are still *incredibly* useful in desktop mode. That control, in itself, is so very important for a handheld PC. I can’t see *anybody* choosing *not* to use them in favour of the joystick’s when browsing/using desktop mode. The steam deck’s ease of use just obliterates the competition right now, at least in *my* testing w/ the ally, ayaneo air and aokzoe. And again, I don’t even use the touch-pads for gaming…

Touchpads are what made me go steam deck over the ally. The fact that it enables whole bunch of other games that wont have native controller support and makes navigation a breeze. Its what honestly what most of these other handhelds lack. Plus having it as a item menu from 1-9 or like a radial menu is insanely useful. I think the trackpad is the best thing about the Steam Deck. And i wish every other controller had it too.

The left touchpad works like a dpad in the ui. Pushing down on the top/left/bottom/right of the touchpad is what your supposed to do in the menu. I would guess what's happening while your swiping is sometimes you push one side of the pad down while swiping. The touchpads are really useful for games that don't have gamepad support. I would recommend trying something like roller coaster tycoon 2 or an rts game with the touchpads.

So if you buy the cheaper one and later decide you want the coated screen, you can do it for $99. @scenenuf

You can literally just get a matt finish screen protector. Probably ones out there that are better than the etched glass anyway, and much cheaper, and not risky to install. The trackpads are extremely useful provided you know how to customize them. I use them for virtual menus in emulators or games with extra keyboard commands that a standard gamepad can't use. Also, the reason the left trackpad wasn't working consistently in the main menu is because it's not set to swipe gestures for navigating. It's set to dpad mode which means you click down in the direction you want to navigate. Your swiping was sometimes putting enough pressure to activate it.

@Nova2127U
@Nova2127U 11 ай бұрын
@@tomoprime217 Yes, recovery is bootable without anything on the SSD, The entire process can be done without a USB stick, only thing you need is a MicroSD card and "possibly" a SD card reader if you're computer doesn't have one. Valve recommends atleast 8 GB minimum of space for the recovery image, so anything higher than that should be good, and then once SteamOS is back on the SSD, you can reformat the SD for actual storage.

I had so much trouble with the recovery image. Much of it was probably old cheap thumb drives but i couldn't get it to boot properly from a micro SD either, and at one point the deck just stopped reading the SD at all. Finaly got one of the thumb drives working after re etching three times.

About thumbsticks - this operation has a reason to do even if you have perfectly working sticks. You can remove dead zones for them at all and they’ll not drift. It gives bit more room for movement and gives bit more precision. Felt pretty nice when I played Mechwarrior 5 - additional precision allowed to perfectly center torso way easier, so it was “measurable” result

Having everything done does look pretty awesome. I did the SSD on mine as soon as I got my steam deck (got the 64GB model, so that was the plan going in). I do have the gullikit hall sense sticks, but they've been sitting in the box. If and when I get drift I'll go ahead and do that. For the case, I've seen a few videos now and EVERYONE said it was a pain. I think what I would do though is swap the back cover and get some matching buttons to swap in which should look pretty good and be reasonable enough to do.

I got my Steam Deck on Saturday and a 2TB SSD from Sabrent ready to go. The first thing I did was upgrade the SSD the moment the Steam Deck was delivered. I really love the Steam Deck. I was debating or trying to justify owning one, but now I don't care. I love it.

Oh, that phrase about trackpads really triggered me. These are really useful for lots of games - better aim, additional menus (weapon swap, special actions, macros), even mini-map navigation. If found for myself that making good control scheme for some games even more enjoyable than playing these games (maybe because I already played hundred of hours)

I've watched a lot of your videos but just noticed i wasnt subscribed. I just ordered a 64gb steamdeck with the intention of upgrading to 2tb and swapping the shell. Glad i watched your video. You just saved me a ton of headache. Ill skip the shell, maybe get a wrap and still do the ssd upgrade.

For some reason when I swapped out the SSD I had a nightmare of a time trying to flash the OS onto it. Sincerely I had a really tough time with it and it had nothing to do with the physical swap but everything to do with trying to get the data onto a thumbdrive and train SSD with that specific operating system. At one point after three late nights of working on it it actually started to install the new OS automatically. It was as though I had a mystical non-physical helping hand at the end of my extremely difficult process. I'm definitely not new to tinkering and this SSD swap was completely beguiling befuddling and ridiculously difficult for no apparent reason.

I use a circular motion on the left touch pad which is makes it like a scroll wheel. It is amazing.

For anyone interested in the shell, you can just replace the back one with a few screws, only the front one is difficult.

funny that i go into this video with: an ssd ordered, no plans to get the hall effect joysticks but was thinking that if they need replacing, why not, and i never planned on a shell swap. lol.

15:10 "The Steam Deck's useless, just, worthless touchpads" Blasphemy. They are incredibly useful, plus they make the desktop mode (or any mouse-operated application like Yuzu or any 4X games) usable, and are pretty nice in FPS's if you get your settings tuned in well. Also they have haptics, and the default steam navigation mode makes it act like a d-pad where you press it (until the haptics click) to move around, not swipe. In games with mouse control though (including shooters), they're tuned to feel like trackballs with momentum and everything which, combined with the gryo, is surprisingly very nice once you get used to it. If you play splatoon, the gyro makes it handle like that but with a (faster, more mouse-like) trackpad instead of a stick. All of that could be said about the Steam Controller too which had the trackpads in a more comfortable location. Valve pls, Steam Controller 2 with all of the Steam Deck inputs and a better trackpad location

Transparent shells are cool and all, but the steam decks shell is so satisfying to hold in that texture is just so great that I can't imagine wanting to change it. I put a spin on mine and I'm already starting to regret it because of how smooth. It doesn't have that perfect grippy feel to it

Man Bob you crazy. The track has are the greatest thing about the steam deck and the one thing all the other handheld PCS are forgetting about. All those old games like Warcraft 2 or 3 and Dawn of War and battlefleet Gothic, that one's not really old, but all these old ass games that are really hard to do with a controller especially RTS games, the track pads come in clutch. The track pads are just amazing things that need the mouse and they're so versatile and you can even set them up to be several buttons. So games that use a shit ton of buttons and you don't have enough on the controller, you can set up a little wheel on one of the touch pads that will be several of the buttons you need

I bought the transparent green back shell from Jsaux a couple months ago. Then they announced their full transparent shells, and I really want to do it, but they don't offer the front in green 😕 I've done Switch Lite shell swaps, and they're fun to do. This looks a little more challenging, and therefore a little more fun to me, in a twisted kind of way.
