Nothing better than hommade yogurt. I've been making it for years. You can hold over some of your homemade yogurt for the next batch. You can even freeze the starter. Iheat my milk (toss in some heavy cream to make it extra rich) on the stovetop to 180 degrees (stirring often), have starter out to come to room temp, cool milk to between 110-115, whisk in starter. Cover pot with lid and just place it in the oven (no towel) closest to light. I also use my excalibur (milk in mason jars) - this way is MUCH faster. I strain to make Greek yogurt and also strain even further for use as a subfor sour cream. Enjoy, Bev! You'll never buy yogurt again!

So you put the milk in the jars and then into your Excalibur to culture ? What a Great Idea !!! What temp and for how long ? Thx a Bunch... Patti

pattihabby Here ya go. www.excaliburdehydrator.com/homemadeyogurt.html I make mine a 1/2 gal at a time & put into serving size jars --serving size up to you ;-) The jars near the fan will set first, so if you have a bunch in the dehydrator, you may want to check & remove as applicable. Hope this helps.

How fun to see this video pop up today. I just put a fresh batch of yogurt in the fridge to finish off this morning. I had a bit too much of last yogurt's batch leftover and ended up nearly making cheese! Lots of whey when I pulled it out of the oven (I start it on the stove up till 200 degrees, chill in an ice bath to 115 degrees and then do the starter addition and finish it with the crock wrapped in a towel on a cookie sheet and usually the oven light on for a bit of warmth) so now I will have to get busy using it up. Hubs loves homemade yogurt and I do it with 1% to lower the cholesterol a bit for him.
@lynndutt22199 жыл бұрын
I used 2 cups of milk and a teaspoon of yogurt. I hope I have the proportions right. The milk is still warming to 190 degrees (F) so my fingers are crossed. I think I'll top it with some home made jam. If this works it will save lots of money. The yogurt I buy is 1.29 a small cup. But it's pure, so I spend the extra cash. But I only buy one a week. This way I can have it as many times as I'd like. Will keep you and your readers posted.

I have been making yogurt like this for about a year. Easy ,easy. I just save some for my next batch and away I go. The kids love it in smoothies and with granola in the morning. The only difference is I add 1/2 cup instant skim milk powder for richness and a bit of sugar for the kids. But its all good. The first time I made it I was sure it would fail because it was so easy but turned out great. Have a great day Bev.

Mrs. Volfie, have you ever heard of "Matsoni" yogurt? It's a type of yogurt that likes to be cultured at room temperature for a day or two. According to the youtube videos I've watched, it doesn't need to be heated or anything. Once I get some starter I'm going to try it, but I just thought you might enjoy learning about this different type of yogurt. Have a nice weekend!

Hi...I've used this method before and it always works well....but because my crock pot won't FIT into my fridge....I decant it from the pot before I put it in the oven. That way I just take the jars from the oven and find room in my fridge by fitting all the little jars around all the other stuff. It doesn't make any difference to the culturing it seems.

Oh I love this I just bought some plain yogurt yesterday. I found the full fat 7% version is only skim milk, cream and active bacterial cultures. Instead of whey and protein powder that the 3% has. Although I don't consider whey and protein powder a bad chemical. Just the full fat has a richer taste. I am gonna try this with 2% milk. Need to see if dollarama got a food thermometer.
@OurHalfAcreHomestead9 жыл бұрын
you really don't need a food thermometer...when the milk begins to steam and tiny fowm like bubbles gather around the edge of the milk..shut it off...then wait til it is warm..stick your finger in it should be just about body temperature..warm to the touch..think of water for starting yeast..that warm..then scoop out some milk..mix in the starter and bobs you uncle!

Try it again but use more starter yogurt than you did before. The more you use, the firmer your yogurt turns out but be warned it does increase the amount of whey that separates. But that is still a good usable product in itself.

I started probiotics when i was having major dental work done. I did not want all the antibiotics to kill off all the good bacteria in my gut. So for me I just kept using them and I don't seem to get sick any more. Its my understanding that the bacteria in your gut is a core component to good heath.
@525Lines9 жыл бұрын
North Carolina Prepper I know in Europe, it's standard to get some kind of probiotic pill after you get antibiotics but not in the US for some reason. I've read there's a causative link between a certain type of gut bacteria and obesity. I was wondering if it's better than drinking kefir but I guess I should just buy them and see for myself.

I do mine in the oven and stove top rather than the crockpot, and it sits overnight in the oven and is finished in the morning. Then it goes in the fridge. Bring the milk up to temperature in a pot, take off the burner, cool to culturing temperature, whisk in your starter yogurt, pour into clean, sterilized mason jars (I use quart and 1/2 quart jars), cover loosely with lids and set into the oven that you preheated for just a couple of minutes at 200F and then turned off but leave the light on (if you can't touch your oven racks, it's too hot...I use a cabled meat thermometer to watch the temperature). Let sit overnight in the oven or for 6-10hrs if you're doing it early in the day. You can use vanilla yogurt too but only if it has active cultures in it. I used the instructions from here youvegottotastethis.myrecipes.com/taste_this/2010/02/greek-yogurt-at-home.html
