Hmm... Never consciously realized that, but yep, it's definitely something to consider. No idea how I'll do that on my game, but worth thinking about it!

Not only do you explain the concept but you show how to implement it, how complex that can be, and also how rewarding it is for the player! Great insight!

One thing like this that i noticed and personally love is Hearthstone. The clicking the dust sound, the interactable map. Good example on this

In case you are wondering, in game design, this is called ''easy fun'' (in opposition to ''hard fun'') !

Little things in games are a must, I would even go that far and make always the main characters quirky, weak and even clumsy. For example wounds if you run against a wall, a chance (1%) of breaking a leg for just jumping on save ground, a chance of losing grip while climbing a ladder, a change of falling while running (starts very low and goes higher the more afraid the character is, also rises in darkness), extreme falldamage would be always in my games (in some cases would be falling just 1 meter down deadly).

I think this is great advice! As a solo dev working on his first big game (RoadHouse Manager), I wouldn't think funsies are high on the importance scale of stuff to make... but ya, can totally see how they are an important element. With no funsies, the game world doesn't feel like an interactive place. I know ya, in a FPS game and I come across a toilet, I always tried to flush it lol. And you get that little bit of disappointment as player if something looks like you can interact with it but you can't, no matter how useless that thing may be. It just goes a really long way to have these.
@PaulMucci

Now all you need to do is add an achievement system to the interactive objects. Makes people want to run around getting as many interactive achievements as possible. People who miss them may play again to make sure they get more.

Hi @thomas 👋 Your videos inspired me so much that I decided to try again after a few attempts in the past. 👍 I have a question: How closely can you recreate other games and legally publish them? 🤔 I'm working on a game that takes heavy inspiration and several mechanics and similarities to another game, and I don't want to get in trouble and eventually waste time and effort for nothing 🎮

I think the concept is valid. Agency is very important to people. Agency is just a fancy psychological term for saying your actions make an impact on the world. If you are carrying a weapon that can kill, why can't it break a glass window, or smash that chair? It robs the player of being able to impact his/her environment. That's the fun. The hard part for the game dev is persistence. If the player smashes that window, saves and exits, and then reenters that space, that window better still be broken. Tracking all that is possible, but you better have a good system to keep up with hundreds, possibly thousands of "actors." You must save the new state on each object. Then you have to set up a loop on game start to reload the state of all those objects before the player is allowed back into that space. Yeah, that's simply bookkeeping, but if you make this contract with the player, you can't cheat them out of going back and admiring their "work." You can get around it if there is no backtracking upon entering a new space, however. Thanks for the practical side of scope creep. It is what has derailed all of my efforts thus far. This time I am just working on the MVP (Minimum Viable Playtest). But I start embellishing. I spent two hours today just auditioning sounds for a mechanical door. I don't even have a level yet, and I'm worried about how the door sounds. Perfectionist self-sabotage is your worst enemy...

Gabe Newell describes fun as "the degree to which the game recognizes and responds to the player's actions." "If I shoot at a wall and nothing happens, I'm getting a narcissistic injury. The world is ignoring me."

Curious what your thoughts on this is. Is Larian Studios a indie studios? They are a private and independent company but are they Indie in the way we describe indie studios now?
@flamart9703
@flamart9703 4 ай бұрын
Мany years ago when I first heard the term "indie" it referred to independent solo developers. Logically, if there are two or more developers, they are no longer independent because they depend on each other. And nowadays, anything that isn't a triple-A company is called indie. :)

@@papsterling8376 i published 3 , one of which has a 96% on steam with over a million players (throughout the franchise), i will not be sharing them due to privacy, I am a developer tho. Everyone should make games and I have no problem with that. However if I was selling you a course on how to write novels in English and my grammar is thanq u, plx next hAhaA! That would be a problem. His code obviously never went through pull requests, it lacks the most basic elements of encapsulation. Code is by no means the most important part of the game, in fact if its the worst code of all time and the game is great (altho unlikely) that's fantastic. I do have a problem with someone selling a course on something they clearly have 0 knowlege/experise on ALL THE WHILE presenting themselves as they do.
