I'm a maker but you're an artisan. This will ne my biggest project yet as far as cutting and printing so much and all the hardware. I usually make toys to sell for charity or custom lighting for people. I'd love to etch pcbs with one of these but I'd need a more powerful laser and temper my expectations as far as the quality. I'm mostly just making all through hole stuff anyway to learn theory.

So cool. I'm going to make a small one first with a 32bit main board with silent steppers and I'm going to have a pi running grbl and such with a monitor and a hole in the bottom for the cenentral air in my other workshop in my barn. I have an electronic workshop inside my house. I'm going g to buy a cheap rotary tool, cheap laser for etching photos or lines in wood for crafts. I'm just going to make my own end stops to save money. Once again, what a job

Thank you so much for sharing your experience on how to test and setup the mpcnc. I have a question, when you were running the tests. I noticed the the 4 corners were not as yet screwed into the surface. So at what point do you finally fit the screws to permanently fix the cnc gantry onto the base board?

With the support brackets installed, you should check for flex half way between the support bracket and the corner. Checking it at the support doesn't really tell you anything.

What kind of wires did you use for your stepper motors? I purchased some 18/4 and its too big for the kinds of plugs and connectors. Did you stick with the connectors that's in the kit or did you purchase some separate ones?
@MakingStuff5 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure it is 18/6. It's off the same spool as what I used for the plasma cutter.
@boceephus63745 жыл бұрын
@@MakingStuff How did you get that wire to work with the plugs then? I got the same board with dual endstops kit and all, but when I go to crimp the ends onto the wires it's too big and then the insulation is too large to fit side by side into the plug. I'm really wanting to use the larger 18ga wire but I'm stumped on how to get the wire to work the plugs on the Rambo 1.4 board. THANKS!

Would it be possible do a cheaper build by replacing rambo board with some arduino + chineese cnc v3 board and some tmc stepper drivers?
@MakingStuff6 жыл бұрын
Yeah there are other boards on the MPCNC web site that are cheaper. However, they don't do the dual end stops. That's why I used a RAMBo.

Hello. I just built a MPCNC. I used the Arduino mega and RAMPS 1.4 board and I was able to configure dual end stops on both X and Y. I bought a 3D printer electronics kit from Amazon. It has been working great so far. Thank you for sharing your build with us.

I've been watching some of your videos, nice work and thank you !!! I'm building a MPCNC right now, getting ready to wire it and add the RAMBO controller. What are your thoughts on using this device as a CNC plasma? I'm planning to try using it to run my small Miller Spectrum 125C. I've watched your plasma CNC videos as well, I like the recent THC and floating Z additions, you've saved me a ton of time already. Since there is no load on the tool when plasma cutting, it would seem the MPCNC should do OK. What are your thoughts?
@MakingStuff6 жыл бұрын
I've seen other videos where the MPCNC was used for plasma so it should be doable.
@citterly6 жыл бұрын
@@MakingStuff Thanks, I have as well and am hoping for good results. Your experience is a bit unique, having built a CNC plasma already. I was thinking you might have insights others are missing when evaluating the MPCNC platform. It's a pretty exciting path with potentially high value given the cost of implementation. Thx
@MakingStuff6 жыл бұрын
Since there is no lateral force being put on the frame like there would be with a cutter, the frame should work well with a plasma torch. I don't know how you are planning to control the CNC. If you use LinuxCNC and stepper drivers you won't have any problems. If you want to use a RAMBo or RAMPS board you will have to figure out a few things like how to turn the torch on and off and how to hook up a THC.
@citterly6 жыл бұрын
@@MakingStuff Thanks, I'm having those same thoughts about the RAMBO. I'll work that direction and see how it goes, hopefully it's no more difficult than triggering the hotend of a 3d printer.
@MakingStuff6 жыл бұрын
@@citterly: You might be able to use the parts cooling fan port on the RAMBo. Try connecting a relay to turn the torch on and off.

@04:17 Us over on the 1000mm X-Carve use Y-Rail stiffeners to prevent those rails from bending but because of their 2:1 ( H:W ) profile we're less worried about them sagging down like yours than we are of them bending in/outwards in case the Head moves along the X-Axis and thus pushing in that direction. IMHO the forces any of those machines will normally encounter are X/Y related, not Z ones so I'm inclined to say that you didn't exactly solve your problem with those center posts.

Lookin' good! Loving the series so far. The corners are not that big of a deal so I don't say anything on the last video. As for the flex, I finally found some numbers to use as a baseline. I was never sure before, www.v1engineering.com/forum/topic/burly-revisions/page/3/#post-72744. So ballpark 1.55kg at the bit (1/8") cutting aluminum at 8.4mm/s. No where near pushing down as hard as you can on one rail. That load is split between 1 or 2 rails depending on direction of cut from the gantry, that is where the flex actually is, the Z to XY gantry rails through the center section. The braces are a good thing (4x rail rigidity increase, but cut into usability) but I think you will find for wood they are overkill.
@MakingStuff6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! This has been a fun project and you have done a great job on the design and all the info on the v1 Engineering web page. I'm experimenting with the supports because I plan on making this bigger for a future project that I am going to start working on next year.
