I like your design. I have been acquiring the cases from HD and online for a couple years and had a similar idea in mind to store mine. I have already gotten rid of my old plastic bins. I have stored all my hardware and other items in the bins, but decided to label each to let me know what is in each. Since I didn't fully have my design in mind for the rack, I printed labels for both the front and side of each bin in case I needed to load them from the side-out when I had my design in mind and built my rack. I have them currently stacked on one another, but the labels already make it easier to find what I am looking for. My rack is next. Thanks.

I just bought a bunch of TigerPly from Frank Miller out here in Union City, IN. The 1/4” is 3 ply + birch veneer and the 1/2” is 5 ply + birch veneer. Planning on cutting some of it today to see how it works out. $27 for a sheet of quarter and $44 for a sheet of half inch. Sadly, it poured rain while it was still in my truck bed. I sat it all out to dry for a couple days, and only one piece had some spots where the veneer bubbled up. I’ll update you with my findings.

I have a bunch of these bins and have been thinking of making the same kind of rack for them. The one thing I'm going to try different though is to have them on full shelves that can slide in the dados (probably just using 5mm underlayment or hardboard for the shelves). That way, when I'm taking a bin to the workbench, it's the exact same functionality as you have here, but then if I just need to grab a part out, I can slide the shelf out halfway, pull the bin out enough to open and get the part, and then slide the whole thing back in.
@itwasrightthere7 ай бұрын
When I built mine, I routed my bin support channels (not sure what to call them) at a 5’ slope the my bins don’t fall out. I have other issues of poor design/build, but that part works well. I also bought about 100 little plastic containers that are about the size of an Altoona tin. I have all my little parts in those with them standing on edge and labeled. It’s compact, easy to keep organized and add/remove the boxes. Now I want to rebuild my HF rack. (Maybe after I finish moving)

I use bins like this but put them on the side opposite the handle. I add feet so they stand up by themselves. Then you mark with a white paint marker on the side of each bin for what is inside. A lot simpler to make one shelf for 10 cases and saves more space. Good choice to replace those open containers. They waste space and collect dust just like you found out.

The problem with the labels mentioned is that you have to read them. Correct solution is to fasten a few samples of what's in a case to the front. Even if you have 3 cases of washers, just one washer will clue you into what else is in a box. Hot glue not so good, tie things on with fine wire, or small sheet metal screws.

First off, great video. I used my label maker to tag them, but the labels didn’t stick real good. Next I put a strip of electrical tape on the handle. It sticks good, and the labels stick to the tape. I also got some colored dot stickers, and use that to color code by type. One color is fasteners, one is hand tools, one is power tool accessories, etc. Finally, I also use the thicker boxes, so instead of the cleats you used, I use 1/4” hardboard slid in. Then I can leave one out and the thicker bins will fit there.

Also in order to tell what's in the bins when i have them on a shelf i used a label maker to print label stickers which i put on the handles. then i can read it without pulling it out to see the tops.

Yeah, that plywood problem is all over. I go to a larger local sawmill called Hollingsworth (Indiana, near Kokomo). But I said as much on your short that I commented on. The tldr version is that the corporate mills in their infinite wisdom wanted to save money on the veneers, so they started cutting them thinner. But when they did that they had a problem with the glue showing through the veneer, which is a big problem for cabinet makers, so they decided to cut back on the glue and well, you see the results.

Then again, I'm also the same guy who has foam cut in his tool chest for ALL the tools LOL Still very much a 10/10 for craftsmanship and organization. The 3D printed stop pieces were an excellent touch

If you're inspired by Adam Savage, he writes a big number on the front of each bin and uses that to create a spreadsheet, then prints out a summarized key that he hangs on the shelves. Another trick: The little plastic bins in these organizers interchange with the plastic bins in HF's half size organizers. Two half size organizers would fit in each slot in your cabinet with a full width shelf. I mix and match bins between organizers to further customize the storage. I have some organizers that are all big bins for larger parts and some that are all small bins for smaller parts, I wish HF sold the inner bins separately but anyone with a 3d printer could make their own. If not there's always Etsy.

I would have just made one single 12-high rack to add alongside. Then to handle the 4 additional bins on top of the original double-wide one., I would have made a hutch to sit on top to make it 2 bins higher. Of course, you still have your old 20 bin rack (empty?) to expand into again... On the triple-wide rack, a 5th (or 6th) center caster would help with the extra load. For labels and organizing, I prefer a top-bottom/left-right approach to sizes/type, and try to put the heavier stuff down low. The order is easy to follow and if labelled well, someone else can find things and put them away correctly! I also like Laura Kampf's use of colors on the bins for different types of contents which makes it easy to go to the right "department" before reading labels. You could also paint the colors on your locking clips to define the department locations. Electrical parts, wood screws, machine screws, METRIC machine screws, etc. get their own colors. You can also see colors from across the shop, so you don't walk to check 3 bins laying around to find the right bin.

Local lumbar yard has great Baltic birch plywood

yep. unless you go to a high end "hardwood" or specialty store, plywood, and most lumber is just cxcrab.

I gave up on big-box-store plywood due to low quality and high price. I now buy from a regional plywood distributor; much better quality for roughly the same price.

I bought some plywood from HD that did exactly the same thing. I ended up using it, but it took me much more time. I told the manager at HD about it and he gave me back half the money I spent. It was so aggravating and I doubt I’ll ever buy plywood from them again.

Need labels on all the bins. I have a system like this and without labels on the fronts it was frustrating AF. --- Can recommend the Brother PT-E550. Lots of reviews on YT. NB. The half-cut feature is a godsend (where it only cuts the label leaving the backing intact). Don't cheap out on the 300-series, pay a bit more and get the 550 . I got mine for £100 on offer but they're usually a bit more than that. I use the cheap aliexpress label cartridges for it though as they're good enough and cost a couple quid each vs 15-20 for the proper ones.

Done differently??????? Well I have the same bins but NOT in racks, NOW I have to open each one to figure out what is where, need to label EACH bin with basic info on the front of them

I would have used 2x4 in the middle and 1x4 lumber on the outside instead of plywood to hold those horizontal slats. Doesn't seem like it's spending money on a plywood construction nor the added time to make long dado cuts. Not really sure why you made the horizontal slats out of plywood either. Seems like 1x3 furring strips would have been easier.

Get a Brother Label Printer, print whatever you need on your labels, and stick them on each of the organizers. No spread sheets, no document to store on your computer/phone/tablet needed, all you have to do is print it, stick it, done.

I did, forgot to show that in the video.

Do you have a slowed down version, that gives instructions, measurements, etc., on how to build it. This seems to be more of a sped up version of watching you build it, rather than an instructional video.
