Most reviewers only talk about the speed and power, but for me, the reason I love my Makita impact driver is that I can use it to drive screws 2 inch screws into softwood - screws that the other drivers I've used would drive through the wood before I could let off the trigger. I'm glad you mentioned that point.

I own the makita 40v and 12v impact driver. i only ever use the 40v if the 12v doesn't have the power, which isn't to often. You are right it's the bulk around the battery area on the 40v, it just seems excessive and clumsy for a impact driver. The trigger feel and control on the 40v is so smooth and a pleasure to use, but i still never really want to use it unless i have to.

I used to think power was one of the most important factors when buying an impact driver but infact I just break bits too easily with 210nm. I buy the best impact bits and change brands / watch project farm to get the best buys for the money but ultimately my less powerfull smaller 165nm impact driver is my go to. It spins faster and has more bpm. These things are more important than power along with smaller size. Ultimately if you need power than use an impact wrench!

absolutely same here. The only thing i would ever want more power is rare occasions like working larger stuck bolts on a vehicle... at which point its supposed to be some kind of a beefier impact wrench. Rather than an impact driver, because having the hex chuck and breaking adaptors. So if I had the money to have 2 different impact tools, the 2nd one would never be the 40v impact driver. It would get skipped over for something else

it seems to me that the only reason why nobody actually buys the Makita Pulsed Oil impact driver (DTS141ZJ) is because it's just far too expensive. For example £300 here in the UK. That is double the price their flagship TD172.... A vicious cycle then, if they cannot get the cost of it down to something more reasonable You see the Milwaukee Fuel Surge ones are not cheap. But they ARE a lot cheaper. So at least some people will be able to afford to buy those ones. Personally I would much rather have a Matika made one though.

I have the 171 North American version and also have the 172 Japanese version in red which I got it after watching your review last year, great impact drivers both of them. All the gains by the milwaukee were in the first few cms of driving; is it possible the soft-wood-start on the makita played a role? I'm guessing it'd sense and react too quick to have that big an effect, but 🤷♂️
@robertrada47832 жыл бұрын
The Milwaukee simply throws more of everything it’s got at it. It does have more torque before adding the hammering mechanism into the equation. Likewise, the hammer hits harder. The drawback to this is that it’s very imprecise, hard to control and quite aggressive toward the operator. It wants to jump out of screws. I found it defeats the purpose of using an impact for myself. Others love it.

Each letter is one syllable so writing a word in their script is easier and more clear than drawing the corresponding symbol.They're made in Japan for Japanese people, so why bother making it compatible for foreigners. I think it also gives the user more of a sense that the tool is an actual Japanese tool and not a foreign production.

Also if the variable trigger is any good anything they did I do with the trigger anyway. I tried Bluetooth connection tools. You guessed it they broke. And a Bluetooth controlled battery charger that never worked properly from day one killed 4 batteries by corrupting their chips. All had to be replaced under warranty. Years ago had mostly Hitachi then they lost the plot. Just started getting back into Hikoki mainly for the nailers. Good nail guns but they don't like the heat. Again probably the electronics in the tool or battery. Hot day in Oz and they cut out all the time. No good having all these electronic options if they don't work and don't last.

We should probably just go back to hammers and screwdrivers and everything would be fine again, yeah.

@@TheOMEGANOX That is all we had when I started as a Carpenter over 40 years ago. They lasted for years. Cost less but still did the job. I like the principal of the new tools but they cost the earth and then break every five minutes. That is what gives me the hump.

New Zealand has trees in the water without it being an alligator infested swamp with a bit of Shrek on the side?

No alligators, crocodiles, snakes, in fact nothing dangerous or poisonous. Just birds and scenery.

I've read Flex doesn't have nearly the same trigger control as the XGT.

I feel like all these new impact drivers are getting far too complicated with all the different settings. I have been using impactors for years and never felt the need to have different speed /torque settings?

The reason they use words instead of symbols on the tools for Japan is simple. The people of Japan can read Japanese language. The words are a respectful nod to the customers that says, "we know that your society is so advanced that even your working class knows how to read, and we respect you enough to use your ancient language here instead of some stupid baby cartoons which may be ambiguous to even a PhD in linguistics ." I wish they used my country's main language on our tools. The cartoon symbols on american drills are a message from the drill company to me that says, "here are some baby cartoons we made up for you, you unfortunate illiterate day worker who can't read the most basic nouns of your own profession."
