You’re a snack! Omg you’re comment made me laugh so much! 😂 But yes, too dangerous! Don’t risk it. Quick question, does not having legs make you a slower swimmer than those with legs? Because if thats the case, than the risk is even higher. I live in Hawaii right now and i really wanted to get my kids comfortable in the water and hope they would learn to swim at the beach during the 3 years we’re here for (military family) but now?! Ummmmm i dont think so. Im okay with them sticking to the sand and filling their buckets with water in like 6 inches of water on the shore.

Scuba divers are typically safer bcs they're not on the surface very much. Also there are shark deterrent devices out now that a lot of surfers and spear fisherman are starting to use. It sends out an electric pulse that sharks can not tolerate.

Hey Hal! Thanks for another great show. I had a tiger shark circle underneath me a few years back in Hawaii about 200 yards offshore, 6:30am or so in the morning, and I haven't been back in the ocean since. I saw the size of that fish and quickly realized I'd made a mistake entering their domain. I thought for sure when I saw it that an attack was eminent, but it disappeared and allowed me to make it back to shore without incident. Luck, maybe it already fed, who knows? It was definitely checking me out before swimming off though.

Hi Hal, let me tell you why I think you're spot on: When we are out on the boats, delivering or what have you, we catch fish as we go, obviously. This we do by hanging a 60m (200ft) line off the back of the boat, clipped to the pushpit (which is a metal railing at the back of the yacht) by a clothes peg. When the fish bites, it pulls the clip of of the pushpit and we know we have a bite. Now I would say that one in five or so are taken by a shark, but not while the line is loose. They wait until I start to pull the line in. They wait until the forward drag of the fish stops it being able to manoeuvre. THEY ARE WATCHING HUMAN BEHAVIOIUR and using it to secure a clean and easy kill. They have complete understanding of what I am doing and are able to modify their hunting behaviour based upon mine. Misidentification cannot be responsible for very many of these attacks at all, as they understand completely what I am and what I am doing. I am convinced of this based upon their behaviour.

This is such an amazing comment, thank you 🙏 The problem with the education system (mostly but not always) is people get locked in to a certain way of thinking, there’s no room for movement. But you….. you actually witness this behaviour on a regular basis and form an unbiased opinion instead of through a lense that has been morphed by preconceived ideas. I too believe that they are so much more intelligent than people let on. I had an encounter with a tiger shark in Australia 25 years ago. I had just lost my mother to cancer and was severely depressed and was taken on a camping trip near the coast. I know it sounds crazy…but I sat in the shallows (water came up to my neck sitting down) and I remember “calling out” to the ocean for comfort and about 2 minutes later a large tiger shark appeared in a wave in front of me and it just hovered there, both of us aware of each other. I remember feeling that it was fully conscious and I was only 15 at the time. Everyone else ran out of the water screaming but I felt a strange peace. It went on its merry way and although I’m still cautious of sharks it forever changed how I view them 💗 I actually got a photo of it after I got out of the water but it was before the digital days so I’d need to find the hard copy 😂

When I was stationed in Okinawa, a friend and I were snorkeling. I went around a coral reef area and a 15’ Tiger shark came around the other side then turned slowly away from me. I was able to count every inch as I slowly backed away in the water. I turned then to my friend and motioned we needed to get out of the water and when we got into the cave we used to enter the water I told him what happened. I never went back in the ocean after that. Oh and two weeks later some friends of mine were cave diving at another place down the coast line. They found half a girls body, a local. The authorities said it was possibly a great white attack. This was in the early 80’s.

People really don't understand that all the training, caution, fighting tactics, etc.,, mean absolutely nothing when you are in the crosshairs of a 15 foot serrated death machine. Yeah, I bet punching its eye or grabbing gills will help your shot at survival. But, it will only help if the shark is more annoyed than it is hungry or curious. Your fate is in the hands of a fish.

I visited Okinawa right before covid! My son in law is AF. My God what a beautiful island and water! I stayed for 2 months and snorkeled on several different beaches and in and out of caves. I have been terrified and fascinated by sharks since i was a child due to the movie Jaws.......but for some reason i let my guard down while in Okinawa 😲......it was just so beautiful. I cant believe how far out i actually went a couple times! One beach i think was called Sandglass Beach....and i was out there snorkeling between ridges and right off the rock cliffs. I got a really funny feeling and just darted back to the rocks.....i had to walk pretty far out onto the rocks to even get in the water in that area. Another beach we went to had the bluest water ive ever seen!! There was alot of kelp and stupid me is just snorkeling all through it 🙄 As soon as Japan gets with the program and opens their borders im going back! AsMoth goes over a single shark attack every video & I picked just random videos to watch (while waiting for you to post 😉) & I swear to God 10 out of 13 attacks happened in a full moon phase. I kept posting about it, he replied he had noticed it too & found a study about it & last week posted a video about it. Most of them are attacks you have already covered. Interesting, seems unlikely to be a that much of a coincidence… Lastly, I have a Graphic! Folder on my page where I save videos & I found the full attack on the woman you covered last week (Brunma Gobbi, Racife, Brazil) - it clearly shows her leg is skeletonized & that she is alive, but barely. When they get her up to street level & are waiting for firefighters to help, Brunna’s right foot moves 2 times & the guy then holds it. sharks know exactly what they’re doing, they know exactly what they’re biting. sharks as a species didn’t survive through millennia because they were making mistakes about what they were biting into or attempting to consume. sharks have a complex electro-sensory system. enabled by receptors covering the head and snout area. these receptors sit in jelly-filled sensory organs called the ampullae of lorenzini. these tiny pores are extremely sensitive and can detect even the faintest of electrical fields. sharks have highly developed senses of sight, smell and hearing. they’re not biting into people thinking they’re seals or turtles or anything else.

@Epona64832 жыл бұрын
I really enjoy your channel, mainly because I like listening to different points of view and you bring up some interesting things to consider. My background is as a scuba diver, and I just wanted to make a couple of comments for those that might be interested: - I agree that the head swinging side to side is probably a threat display, but I think it may also have to do with field of vision. I read a study (I wish I saved the source, but I think it was conducted in Australia) about how large their field of vision is based on eye placement, and only the hammerhead could really see directly behind them. - When talking about test bites and why divers don't observe the same behaviors as you see in encounters at the surface, it is comparing apples and oranges. When diving, we don't display prey characteristics. We're calm, often vertical in the water, and we are facing the shark as it assesses the situation. I feel like it knows that we are aware and it isn't willing to risk injury approaching something that doesn't look like prey anyway. Divers are almost never attacked, and if they are it's usually when spear fishing, in areas with shark feeding dives that alter shark behavior, or when divers are harassing a shark by getting too close. - Talking about the language and statistics "shark experts" use, a lot of it is just spinning it to highlight how infrequent attacks truly are. The current global yearly average over the past 10 yrs for unprovoked attacks is estimated between 70-80. When you consider just how many people enter the water every day to swim, surf, fish, etc., I am shocked that number isn't 10 times that. I think when they are trying to give explanations and excuses, they are trying to justify what caused that shark to attack when so many others that are near humans in the water don't. In saying that, I believe facts should be stated clearly without bias, and "experts" should admit if they aren't sure why something happened. Anything else is either sugar coating or sensationalizing.

What I've always found almost ludicrous is this notion that most attacks are accidental and/or that most sharks are afraid of us. So your telling me that a 15 ft. long animal that is fully capable of killing a variety of large marine mammals , see's one of us and thinks "I'm afraid of that land thing that can't swim well and has far less ways of hurting me than my regular prey? Not buying it. I also wanna know where all the "mistaken identity" attacks and fatalities from crocodiles are? You try to tell ANYONE with half a brain that a 5 meter Saltwater Crocodile killed and consumed "Johnny" just because it thought he was a gazelle and they'll start laughing..as they should. The mere notion of it even is laughable. Same with a Lion, Tiger or Grizzly. No mistaken identity. No, ONLY Sharks mistake humans for other prey. I love sharks. They've always been my favorite animal. I've been reading and learning about them since I was a child and I fully support protecting them. That said, the amount of disinformation likely believed by the majority of the public (created and parroted by "experts") concerning shark behavior is disturbing. I have little doubt that a Crocodile will kill or attack in more cases than a shark will but my point is this. If a large Shark decides it wants to attack you, be it for food, over territory, or basically ANY other reason, like the Croc...It KNOWS what you are, it knows what it's doing and it's definitely NOT afraid of you. Love your videos Hal, keep up the good work!

Hey Hal! I love your channel and have been watching you for awhile; two years or so (over a year and half for certain). Regarding the Lake Nicaragua, Bull Sharks do live in the lake, as it was part of the ocean centuries ago; and the saline dissipated over time and the marine life adjusted. Now the Bull Sharks have been know to swim up the rivers, just like the salmon and jump in the lake. They know this do to research and finding ocean tagged Bull Sharks in the lake, and Lake Nicaragua tagged sharks in the ocean. It’s a very interested study that I personally have found fascinating, as it shows the tremendous adaptability and resiliency sharks possess. Keep up the great work my friend, and as marine biologist and wild life ecologist myself, I think you’ve done a magnificent job; truly you’re top notch my friend!

See the article on those living there on the lake, 1992, just 15 years after professor thorson changed it from land locked to breach up sets if rapids to enter and leave the lake. People living there fishing for them tryin to prove it is not what i know it is from Thorsons research, a myth. I will go by those that couldnt find any sharks fishing there over anything supposedly proving they were ever there. All bs as not a single MB went to get any photo/video evidence of sharks breaching river rapids…. Myth

I like when they say the chances of being attacked by a shark is the same odds of being struck by lightning. Is that the entire population? Because people in Kansas probably are not going to be attacked. But I grew up fishing, swimming, surfing and diving in south Florida and here we have lightning sirens daily in the summer time. I've had a couple close calls both by lightning and sharks. In Florida you can actually get attacked by a shark and struck by lightning at the same time. Are shark attacks rare? For the most part yes.is getting struck by lightning rare? Yes most the time. But if you live in Florida your odds are alot more than these biologists say.
@kelseybowen53622 жыл бұрын
Every time they say the odds I’m like “this has got to be the WHOLE human population, NOT PPL WHO ACTUALLY LIVE BY/ON THE OCEAN, duh your more likely to meet one of these guys” lol

@@kelseybowen5362 Im pretty positive I could go get attacked by a shark right now if I wanted to. There is a boat dock by my house where people clean there fish and throw the guts in the water. There are atleast 5 big bull sharks there at all times. If I jumped or fell I would probably be devoured by sharks.
@christiangudmundsson8390 Жыл бұрын
Obviously it's the entire population, it's quite simple really: about 250000 people are hit by lightning every year, about 6000-24000 of them die from it. Shark bites are maybe 100 a year, with like 5 or so being fatal. No doubt people in the water where there are sharks are far more likely to be attacked by sharks than the rest of the population is. People who live where thunderstorms are more common are more likely to get hit by lightning.

Miramar is the area west of Havana's bay I mentioned in one of your prior videos, specifically, the one regarding Cojimar, where the biggest white shark in Cuban waters was caught. Miramar in 1931 was a scarcely populated suburb of the city. It's the equivalent of Malibu, or the Hamptons, with sprawling estates and beautiful albeit mix of rocky seafloor and beaches. Perhaps Pablo would have survived the attack if the hospital equipped to deal with such injuries was closer to Miramar, but at the time, the only facility nearby would be in the city of Marianao, which is the municipality and city where Miramar is located. Poor guy didn't stand a chance. Thank you, Hal! You have featured my country of birth in your videos. Though tragic, I appreciate it being myself a man who loves the sea.

I enjoy your channel. It confirms what I've come to believe after spending my life in Florida on the water. I want to throw something out here my grandfather told me about the shark attack numbers that I've heard almost nothing about. About 10 years after WW II he has access to data compiled by the navy as to shark attacks. It estimated that Japan lost approximately 20,000 service men to shark attacks. America, Australia and Great Britain estimated numbers of around 5000 each. Why are these numbers not included in shark attacks number? Has anyone seen anything to confirm this?Many years later his team was tasked with studying the possiblity of electronic means of repelling sharks. I guess what we would call the Shark Shields of today. His background was something to do with submarine electronic warfare and radar research and development. Once he found out I was scuba diving he became angry and continually opposed my diving. He often talked about pilots in the Pacific that parachuted from their aircraft being eaten before they could get to them. The men lost to sharks swimming around the islands in the Pacific. Sharks feeding on men in the surf after some of the island invasions before the could be recovered. He said none of these were officially recorded as shark attacks to keep it from the families back home. Obviously I was not there and can not attest to the accuracy or the documentation with the military. But I can tell you it had a life long profound impact on his life and his view of the ocean. In my personal opinion you should not trust sharks. Do not by the propaganda that sharks bite you by mistake. I no longer scuba dive after having a hammer head stalk me for at least 10 minutes. I watched this shark continually work to get behind me. It skillfully countered every move I made. I was thinking just as hard as was. The entire time I heard my grandfather's voice in my head. Sharks are the king of the ocean.

Hey Hal, thanks for putting these together. I love that you took the time to establish a data base and spread sheet it. In the absence of information crazy notions grow so you get full credit for taking this on man. I love your passion for the subject and I love that you are digging in to gather as much detail as you can. What I have noticed about historical events from the past is that the further back we go the less reliable information we have. Its tough to do research like you are doing because so often there is only one report on an attack. Thats just how things were back in the day. When we come into events from the past and the details are incomplete sometimes its necessary to speculate about what happened because we lack information to clarify what happened. I think you're doing a good job of trying to fill the gaps left in the events you're reporting and I think you are presenting plausible explanations for what actually happened but, I think its important to make the distinction that we are trying to speculate about what happened since the important details that would clarify what actually did happen are often absent. The more current attacks you are reporting usually have more information so speculation is often not necessary. There are witnesses and often enough survivors to tell the story. Be wary man about certainty where there is none. Thanks for taking this on Hal and keep on keepin' on man. Pete Fresno, CA

The recent attacks are the ones i only get one source, like the january mexico attack has only 1 source, tracking sharks. Everything known when i looked end of jan was all from his video released 3 weeks after the attack. The older attacks i am getting different news articles on that did not worry about offending anyone, 1980 and prior. And H David Baldridge and others covered many as well. No alternate coverages now as the ISAF keeps the info from the public for privacy to victims and families. Wasnt that way til the university took it over

Found this channel a couple of months ago. Congrats, you have the only channel where I have seen every posted video. After all the attacks you have covered here, I tend to agree with you about how they are happening and the non-separation of species data. Any predatory animal has a food budget they live by, and will eat anything they think they can get for the least effort applied, end of story. They should be treated no different than bears. Sometimes the bear will eat a person, sometimes it will attack to defend territory(or young in a bears case). Lots of encounter end with no attack/injury. It all depends on the bear, sharks are no different.

Great episode. Pretty soon you won't get gender either the way things are going these days. Back in college I was one of a few who loved statistics. It's so easy to manipulate outcomes by just changing the parameters to get the result you want it to show. I think biologists are "encouraged" to show shark attacks are rare because the tourist industry is vital to most coastal areas. Like you said, they include all sharks in the data and then they estimate the number of people in the water and ta-da shark bites become insanely rare. Millions of people enter the water every day worldwide, and very few are ever bitten by a shark much less fatally wounded. Include every bite done by the tiniest of sharks in with the large sharks and fatalities almost never happen. Then if you tell people that most shark bites are mistaken identity or curiosity it might give them the idea that if they're not floating on a board or swimming in a black wet suit with flippers, all the sharks will see they're not a seal and they'll be safe. It seems to me that whenever the truth is distorted, hidden or replaced with flat out lies it is usually tied to economics. As with most things-follow the money or who has the most to lose or gain from the truth vs the results given.

I agree with Hal, even my Clownfish are cunning little sheisters that have a vendetta against the shrimps over the sinking pellets i rotate into the diet once a day. They understand if they can hog the frozen brineshrimp i topfeed into the tank it will deprive the shrimps of the most nutritious meal of the day. I even try to feed them separate and the Clownfish deliberately ignore it on their side of the tank and attempt to steal quickly from the shrimps. The shrimps use their antennules to irritate the fish's gills which is also cunning. Long story short, don't underestimate Bony fish's let alone Cartilaginous ones, and even invertebrates can be little Napoleon Tacticians.
