I like that you touched on how it's not all about practicality. During my journey, I went through a period where I hardly spent on new clothing, and wore items from years ago. I loved the frugal and minimalist lifestyle that it promoted. However when I turned 30, I realized that my clothing styles did not fully reflect other things I value - personal expression, creativity, and aesthetics. So, I'm back to purchasing beautiful pieces albeit through an intentional lens. I don't think the past times were wasted, because it helped me to understand what I truly value and now spend my money in an intentional way.

I did this about 18mths ago when I completely changed jobs. I allocated 1 bin to keep storage and that was it. The reality was, donating my beautiful pieces to someone else in need, but the biggest win was opening my cupboard, to only seeing anything that I could wear, mix and match and have space in my cupboard really made my heart sing, and made time for getting dressed a breeze & peaceful. I've since encouraged my husband and children to do likewise, their not as on board as I am, but I can influence in other areas of our lives that hubby has since noticed. Our backyard, finances/savings, pantry cupboards, common areas - dining & loungeroom. Do it, you'll never regret it. ❤❤

Another poignant upload: THANK YOU! I've been slowly going through my possessions and mindfully letting go items that no longer brings me joy, or simply no longer fit the new lifestyle I've curated. You're so right in your statement that "things are just things". The elders in my family had a different way of raising this life provoking topic. Whenever they saw us kids being wasteful with our money buying things we truly didn't need only so we could say that we owned them, they'd always remind us that "at our funeral, the only thing inside our casket will be us". It took a few years for my mentality to actually absorb these words, but I am so grateful that I now understand their full meaning.

My kitchen is already 80% clutter free. But going through my clothes was emotionally draining...I felt really overwhelmed. After months of going through them, I'm finally ready to let go of 80% of my clothes, shoes, cosmetics, jewellery. And yes, it is incredibly liberating and freeing.

Love this, and love your slow and intentional approach. I started doing a version of P333 in February 2013 to wear all my items which was really helpful and eye-opening. Then we had kids in 2015 and 2017 and that threw my wardrobe needs into utter chaos, but I eventually embraced the seasonal change and am now working my way to 100 year-round items (I live in Missouri, where we have two longer extreme seasons and two short mild ones, so having a variety of coats, footwear, and clothing weights is important). In this season, that feels great; lots of variety, but a good signal-to-noise ratio.

p.s. i love clothes! Minimalism and FRUGALITY are 2 different things. Just because you're a minimalist doesn't mean you only need to own 3 clothing items. You can minimize useless relationships and own all the clothes you want to if you love those. Cheers!
@jasminep.9042 жыл бұрын
That is true as well. I find that I love most of my items; so it’s really a matter of caring for them long term-I accepted that I went overboard with clothing purchases and are going to just take really great care of them and Taylor them if they are too big or don’t fit right. I do not see myself spending money on clothes until I’m 50. But I also feel like 50 year old in great shape also dress like 30 year old too. So maybe I will never shop for clothes again on my minimalist journey.

@@MalamaLife today I actually went through my three closet; two totes and all 8 of my dressing room draws which are 12 in deep. Feeling a lot of guilt and “what was I thinking” and how can I move forward now. This video was so helpful for keeping my sane; I kept listening to it over and over. I keep telling myself, what’s done is done; no more shopping for the rest of my life. I think I feel a more over abundance as a result of COVID Changing the landscape for us. Now I work from home; so no need for pencil skirts and professional attire; the social scenes have decreased as well. People are less likely to do huge group outings. But I am going to accept the financial loss and I’ve stored the clothes that I won’t touch for the next two years into the same plastic bags you’ve used here; and back into my totes. As off right now, I didnt get rid of too many things for all the reasons you’ve mentioned in the video. Wouldn’t want to get rid of things only to buy them again. I’ll get rid of things as they become more worn. I will donate; sell and hand down to family members the items that I know I do not like. I have no idea what I was thinking when I bought these. Also found clothes that I loved and completely forgot about.

Wonderfully inspiring! Thank you for sharing and taking us along the journey with you. I think it is much more simple when you live in a climate that doesn’t fluctuate much. I live where all four seasons can present in a single week. But I do believe that a wardrobe can be just as minimal and simple as this. It takes an incredible amount of discipline and knowing what you like though. I am in a phase where I have definitely spent a lot of money and collected a lot of clutter with clothing, not really knowing what I like and what is practical for my life and where I live. I have so much storage in the garage of my heavy winter clothes… Every time I walk out there I realize just how much I have! I do have a couple of bins holding quarantine items or otherwise known as maybe items. I definitely like a slightly dressier style, but I think somethings are a little bit too much so. I don’t wear them but I wishfully wear them if that makes sense. So they almost seem like they get use. It’s very silly. Anyway, this is incredibly helpful and inspiring and I appreciate the time you took to film your process. I cannot wait to hear about the changes happening in the next couple of weeks!

I live in a dry hot climate and adjusting my wardrobe took time. I started by defining my style & life style. I love classic, bohemian & modern shapes. So these three things are my faves in that order. I have a casual lifestyle. I edited my closet, which meant taking out things I knew I didn’t wear or no longer fit. Then I organized what was left, I used matching hangers and hung about 2/3 of my items. I also can now manage those items better since I can see the bulk of them. I kept the maybes in the closet. I have since gradually moved out things (I just donated 4 tops, & 2 bags & 1 wallet). I have 8 pair of shoes 7 two handbags. Mostly only use one of those bags and I take really good care of it. I have the rest of my things in 3 drawers in my dresser. Undergarments, t-shirts, lounge sets, workout clothes & jeans. My method for adding into the closet is I only replace it if it’s an item I really wear. I do mostly buy basic colors (it’s just what I like) and I coordinate those items better like this. I will also only purchase better quality items when I replace an item. Brands I love-Universal Standard, Chico’s, Gap, H & M (Conscious Line). I will find other brands that suit my size and age range and life style. Shoes Franco Sarto, Converse, Thursdays Boots, Office of Angela Scott. Bags-Coach, Kate Spade & Etsy. Your closet looks great and I love that you have things where you can see them. This is always going to be an ongoing process but it’s actually really fun learning how to add to or replace with the perfect items. You end up with things you really love. 💕

I love ozma:). I feel the same about not always wanting to go the practical route. I have a capsule wardrobe but it’s fun to switch it up to express yourself.

I don't have a capsule wardrobe but I would consider it a curated one. I did a series of declutters over the last year and now wear about 80% regularly, the rest is either season or event specific. I still have some items that could probably be moved along and I definitely have some gaps I want to fill, but pretty much the only time I have to think about my clothes now are when all my work clothes are in the laundry lol. It really is a great feeling to know you enjoy wearing everything in your closet. Plus I realized I truly love wearing dresses in our hot summers, so I can go find new items for next year I wouldn't otherwise have thought to get.

When you said clutter is when we "are not sure of what we want or need in our lives. Decluttering seems to be the opposite " I had an 'aha! Moment. 😄 I'm learning to trust myself more. I like the idea of decluttering as trusting I know what I need /want 💖

So happy for you. I did exactly the same. My cupboard was crammed with old clothes of all measurements. I just took them in stages to the Charity shop to give to patients in Hospices. Like-minds think alike. Thanks for posting in such inspirational videos. GOD BLESS YOU. I will also check your link too. 🙂

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us❤. They have definitely inspired me to take a plunge into decluttering my wardrobe and give slip to the items I have not worn in 2-3 years but it was me who was attached to them and not the other way round😩. Thank you 🙏once again. Lovely video with such a lovely, soothing voice.

I think what I love most in this video is the reminder not to feel guilty. My life has transformed in more ways than one the past year and a half and it slowly was minimizing and decluttering, mostly because I live in an insanely small studio in Santa Monica, CA. However, amongst that transformation I still was holding onto tendencies of…holding on and accumulating even if it looked a bit different or seemed to be beneficial but I continues to grow in my heart and mind and that has been leading me to go deeper and deeper into minimizing. I definitely am not a minimalist and have just technically started my journey. Going back to feeling guilty I have gotten rid of so much stuff that I have never used, or worn, and even in a lot of cases “just bought” so literally buying it, having it for a short amount of time and turning around and getting rid of it and that usually happens because I am trying to be more and more honest with my self but it literally feels a bit gut wrenching. I do definitely offer to give friends things first and foremost which brings me a lot of happiness with no guilt. I am trying to be a bit easier on my self too because I am an artist so I have a lot of art supplies which is pretty inevitable but secondly, my space is so small so I try not to beat my self up too much. My best friend has been on this journey for a long while and she has a family and the past week or so we have been FaceTiming and going through our stuff together and getting rid of things, it’s pretty amazing. I have done this without watching many videos at all but have subscribed to a few channels and I am super happy to have come across yours! Thank you, God Bless 🤍

I have A LOT of clothes in the drawers of my windows seat. I decluttered most of my closet on New Years Eve/Day 2022 and have NOT looked nor touched those items in 5 months. I always feel better when I do this. I also aim to declutter my bedroom, whether it's clothes or random objects, every new year as I still live with parents.

I studied the konmari method and while I do love it I feel you are right. Setting things aside and returning to them has been incredibly helpful for me. I did this because my anxiety made me struggle to get rid of certain things but having a maybe pile really helps with that.
