"Who was I trying to impress?" The minute you discover these beautiful words, that's when you are free to truly live. Wear your crocs to Costco, own a single Yeti mug for coffee and fill it with water when you're done with coffee. Stop worrying that other people think your house looks bare, I'll be the one laughing when I'm not dusting my precious moments. Live your truth :) Thank you!

Those words hit me recently. I was buying dress shirts, dress shoes, ties, blazers. And it’s stuff I enjoyed wearing but it was also to give off this image that I wasn’t poor that I had money when I really didn’t. And all I ever do is go to Walmart and stay at home and play video games. I don’t need to impress people I don’t need to give off this image of something I’m not

I did this in 1993 at the beginning of a one-year road trip. Even when pared down to the barest of "needs", at the end of the year I realized I had only used about a third of what I brought with me. Very eye-opening. And very freeing. Capitalism is a plague on the planet.

Consumerism and materialism is a plague on the planet not capitalism. When I was a kid in the 50s the US my parents were much more capitalistic than my generation or later generations. My parents + their peers didn't consume or collect nearly as much stuff as people do currently.

Capitalism isn't, hyperconsumerism caused by chrony capitalistic entities is. Capitalism to improve the quality of life, the quality of production, the improvement of society as a whole is great. The issue is human greed that has nothing to do with capitalism as an economic tool. If capitalism is utilized for production (like building a bakery, farm, something useful for both the entrepreneur and customer), nothing is wrong with it. If capitalism is used for onesided hyperconsumption, we end up in a mess. I am btw all for minimalism and already down to 3 suitcases, and today I'm scaling down even more. Some of my hobby material (last of it) might be sold so I can travel. Not because I don't want it, as it will last a lifetime, but mainly because I don't have the luxury to leave it behind somewhere and the cost/benefit of storage is negative. "The things you own, end up owning you." was similarly a truth and inspiration to me as to many others. The burden of getting rid of what's owning you reveals it all.

@@misterarminius5907 All current economic and government systems are incredibly archaic and corrupt. They don’t actually address the needs of people appropriately. Humans are either very slow to understand, or more likely, they are driven by self interests, power, greed, nepotism and cronyism.

When we were downsizing, I was surprised that I was mourning the loss. But, what I realized is that it had taken me decades to finally afford what I wanted instead of only being able to buy the necessities. Now I was having to let those go and go back to almost nothing. It only worked because I had a better dream.

My husband and I did the exact same thing. Fitted our lives into 4 bags and moved to Canada. Sold cars and everything we own in 4 weeks, it was a huge rush as Covid was hitting. Amazing how when we are young, we buy stuff to define ourselves, but when we get older, we are stuck with stuff that has no meaning. Takes energy and organization to get rid of stuff (harder than acquiring stuff). If you can find your passion, you will find that things lose much of their meaning. You can be happy creating, just being, or being with someone. My wife and I have given ourselves three years to downsize before we move to the west coast. Can't wait to get there but dreading the move.

Some very interesting observations and experiences. As an older person, I appreciated what you said about the whole process of emptying your house being exhausting. That is one thing I don't want to pass on to my children when I'm gone. What a terrible legacy for your children - having to get rid of all your stuff! You're a young person. Yes. Congratulations!. I’m happy for you. These marketing/consumerism schemes don’t work on me. I abhor shopping and parting with my hard earned money. I have never been materialistic and always a saver. Happiness is innate. Everything on this earth is temporary. External events and people are just the icing on your cake. After losing my Mom to cancer at 62, I realized just how short life is. I’m so grateful for all my blessings. Living frugally within my means, being a minimalist and buying only the necessities: food and shelter, I comfortably retired and happily left the rat race workforce debt free and stress free. It’s comforting having the cash to buy what I need when I need it. Retirement is good. Be safe and God bless.

Too many people living beyond their means, drowning in debt with zero emergency money, zero savings and zero retirement. Are you one of them?; projecting your “OCPD”?. Now I realize that losing them holds an opportunity to say goodbye to that period of time, and to let go... knowing that it does not make me less of a wonderful human being because I miss wearing them. People move into a house or apartment then they buy things for that place. Then they "need" more and "nicer" things. Then they need a bigger place to hold all their stuff and more and nicer things for the new space. Everything you own you have to carry in one way or another it all weighs you down. I think throughout history "things" were hard to get because you had to make them yourself or trade services to get the items. With industrialization came cheap easy goods and the yearning to have more and more. It is very liberating to unburden yourself of unnecessary items.,fewer things to have to manage, clean, store, and organize.

An empty Shaker village in Northwestern Massachusetts tour guide answered a question that when a woman once got pregnant there, she and her mate were asked to leave the community. I guess they only took in orphans and have since perhaps gone extinct. Very spare buildings, and, yes, beautifully designed and handmade things. Kept their chairs hung on the walls when not in use: one side of the dining hall for men, one side for women... Perhaps all at one long table???

I am moving as well on Sunday back to Italy, leaving behind my house in England. I will leave the furniture in and only take with me 2 suitcases. It's indeed an overwhelming feeling, I sometimes feel like crying because of too many emotions going through me now! I am very excited as well to go back, Italy it's my world, my family and my dog is there, I love that country more than any other country on this planet and on Tuesday I will be on the Amalfi coast so I cannot really complain, but still it's a huge change that simply touches you! And yes, all this moving taught me that I don't really need lots of material things to feel happy, the more I go in time, the less I need really, less stuff makes me feel free and light! I can relate so much with this video, big life changes for both of us! I am in good company ha,ha! Much love sweetheart, stunning video as always! xxx

So, I totally admire and respect what you and your husband have chosen and I am looking forward to see how your world changes as you relocate, but I'd like to offer a different perspective on "stuff" ownership. I am 54 and divorced and I agree, I don't really want to full up my world with meaningless stuff to impress people, however, I do love owning a home and I do like having a reliable vehicle and a certain amount of quality items that I use heavily. As a younger guy in my 20's, I really did not have much at all - I worked all sorts of crazy and dangerous jobs to get through college and while I was climbing the job ladder I often went without stuff in order to save. I lived in dumpy little apartments and I drove cars that left me stranded. And now at 54 ya know what? F--k that, if I never have to do that again, I am not. Seriously. Many of us in my age group paid our dues this way (not that your age has not, but stuff is way easier to get now, it really is). So my sense of ownership is a lot more than "flexing" or living some marketing lifestyle. It's about pride in my home and having a home to share with others. It's about having a reliable vehicle for work or to help neighbors or friends out - it's about self sufficiency and the results of a lifetime of work. So yeah, just a different perspective.

Hi, found your video just when I started sorting out the boxes full of things. It looks like having to move apartments twice in course of few months is good to really go down to what is necessary. I am realizing how much I am limited by all the things I have and I am not actually deciding for a home for myself, but worrying about where to place all my stuff. I appreciate you admit that it is a hard process to actually go through all this...I thought it was only me being exhausted :) And yes, it is much more difficult to get rid of the possessions (if you want to do it at least a bit responsibly) than acquiring them. Thank you for encouraging me not to give and go on... :)

I've been decluttering in waves over the past two years. I feel lighter and am getting rid of more now. At the same time, I'm watching a friend clean out his father and grandfathers house. There's just so much and it's been extremely taxing on him to work through all this stuff. I've spoken to my own parents about their things as they're heading to the next phase of life and looking to downsize. It's amazing just how much can be accumulated, and hold space, time and energy to maintain and remove. The penny hasn't dropped for my parents yet how much effort this will take just to remove things and I have been preparing for the time where I'll have to help them. It is taxing for me just knowing that's coming.

Emptying out a house is very exhausting and emotional. I have moved close to 7 times in last few years. I don’t want to move ever again. Simplify. It’s so important and being now more intentional! Best of luck to you both. 💕

I really appreciate this video. I’m going through a similar process due to health issues. It takes a lot of energy to go through the whole house and get rid of whatever you can/have to. I’m hoping to be able to create a home in the future that encourages me to be more present and less cluttered.

Just like you, I had to fit all my belongings into 2 suitcases to go to Bali, a few months ago. The decluttering process was overwhelming and SO exciting. Yet, moving over to another country has A LOT of challenges I wasn't fully aware of at the beginning. I'm glad I decluttered though, but I crave a home feeling and the luxury of having your own minimalistic place/home, without unnecessarily buying lots of things.

I spent a decade of my life traveling, 23 to 33, abouts, and at first, I’d buy momentos from each place. After awhile, I realized I was just wasting money on junk. I started to collect tiny yacht flags instead to limit my purchases. Also, I was shopping, and not engaging my surroundings as much. Everyone wants to sell you things. After discovering the places in the world I liked, traveling got cheap because I only needed essentials and focused my time on the place, people, and learning the languages. I’d go run, swim, or surf instead of buy things. I got very good at traveling for months on end across dozens of nations in multiple continents with a carry on. I’d say I was about pro. But I get it. Good for you. Portugal is a top spot on my list too. I walked across Spain twice and each time ended my trip in Portugal. Gorgeous place. Did you buy a home there? My neighbor on Oahu bought a condo there for like $120k and says the maintenance is like $30 a month. In a Southern Beach town.

I've been doing something similar. We are basically moving into a tiny house, it suits us for our new work. We are putting things in storage just to make sure we are happy with the lifestyle before doing anything too permanent but I'm still struggling to choose what to take. Like minimising the kitchen to the size i need it to be. My closet will fit but is arguably still too much. But then theres some of the personal items that I'm trying to justify taking. At the same time i don't want to be tripping over things in my tiny house. I've been minimising for years, but taking it too a really basic level is harder than it should be. It's just stuff i don't know why I'm so attatched. I can't imagine doing 5 suitcases yet 😂

It was another very inspirational video Sophie, I am thankful that you could do it in midst of all your move. I could so relate to you! It's so difficult to sort things that you've accumulated for so many years and fit all these in just a few spaces. Moving to a new place is so difficult especially if you are weighed down with a lot of materials/stuff/documents. :(

Can I recommend getting a Kobo device for your books? A Kobo is attached to Overdrive/Libby for libraries, so it's one light-weight device that will last you at least a decade and you can read when you're traveling or from the comfort of your bed. I personally like the Libra H20. (I'm a big reader, personally, so I can't imagine life without books. This is a way to access them affordably and without clutter.)

Congrats on your realization of TOO much stuff. I'm very happy for your husband and you. I also learnt this a few years back from an unhappy experience (Seperation with my ex) that became a cornerstone for me afterwards. I realized then that all the things I had wasn't enough to heal a broken heart. Some years later, last year, thats where my journey about questioning how to live more intentionally began. Society has definitely had influence on a lot of people, more money, spend more, you deserve it, you can afford it, life will be better, etc, unless you take a step back or go through what I went through, where i downsized from a larger place to a smaller place or, like you, moving somewhere else, its hard for people to put things to perspective. People are too busy trying to "keep up" when in reality, all that is irrelevant and a waste of time and money. Once you experience this, I think thats when life really starts, the earlier the realization the better. Instead of trying to "keep up" I tried to keep up my enjoyment of music through my KZbin channel I started half a year ago. Hopefully, someday, I'll reach the 442k subscribers mark like you though it looks like a long way to go.😆. Thanks for sharing your story.

Some nice furnitures to create a coszy , clean home . Living a healthy , clean , minimalistic lifestyle is very refreshing and grownding for us humans . As it reminds us of what realy matters in Life . Personelly i brefore spending more money into healthy delicious organic food or health care than in buying tooo many clothes all the time . A well nourished person lookes beautyful anyways ! ☺. Once you know your personel style , you dont need much . Just the right pieces for combination ! And just be creative ! First moving from Europe to the USA when we were your age, then about 30 years later we sold all our stuff and moved on our sailboat for almost 7 years. 😳This is reminding me to get rid of more stuff now. I want to move to Nigeria in a few years and I don't want to deal with having to get rid of almost everything at once. It is emotional to let go of things even when those items can be replaced, the time it took to get something the way I wanted it can't be replaced.

This video resonates with me so much!! It is very beautiful and profound and also emotional for me on a personal level. I went through a similar journey to become a nun (Christian). I documented the process on KZbin in a channel called anglicansisterjourney. Everything you say reminds me of monk and nun principles - both Buddhist and Christian - and you are showing the beauty and benefits of how anyone even if they are not religious can put these practices and mind sets into their life. Your channel is amazing and this video sure brings back memories for me of parting from so much to enter the convent then parting from even more just before receiving my habit (nun robes). Keep up the inspiring channel and I wish you all the best in your life. Lizzie x

During the pandemic as I spent more time at home and really looked at all that we owned I caught myself repeatedly thinking ‘why do I have this?’ I’m a maximalist and I love all my art, plants, books and tiny tchotchkes- all of which bring me happiness. But clothes and shoes -so much of our clothing and accessories is for our ‘outside the house’ persona. I think what really did it for me was not being able to easily close stuffed drawers - filled with clothes I barely wore anymore. I’ve been decluttering in my head and procrastinating for months and while I have made a small start (all the clothes I REALLY Like now fit in one rather large suitcase) I know it’s a long long process as I want to be mindful about how I let go of items. Not just toss them out. I’ve been thinking EXACTLY what you’ve put so beautifully in words. It inspires me to carry on! Thank you. ❤️
