I regret purchasing a range of clothes in the past. I have given away so much clothing and every year I still give away more. Not purchased any clothing at all for 5 years.

Sadly handbags and wallets - I was addicted. Proudly reformed nowdays. I have 1 x small cross bag I use daily & 1 backpack if I need to carry more.

Regretted purchases happen because of: 1. Society’s pressure/fashion 2. Experimenting 3. Buying for fantasy self 4. Insecurities 5. Lack of information/knowledge My biggest regretted purchase is formal clothes ( now I’m selling half of my wardrobe on eBay :0) I was dressing my fantasy self: who has a high flying corporate job, gives lots of presentations and attends formal events every week.

haha yes! I can relate to this. My fantasy self also worked in a high rise office in the city and travels every weekend and goes to fancy dinners :) my reality is soooo different from this scenario.

I feel like I should buy the best quality I can afford which often means high price tag items. So I save for months to buy a purse. And then the pressure is on to get the one I won’t regret buying. This all leads to unnecessary stress

I love clothes as much as the next girl, now after decluttering, I wrote a list of why I decided to part ways with those clothes, eg bad material, 3 quarter sleeve lengths, fishtail skirts, loud prints etc, so that I can refer to this list (saved on my phone!) during future shopping trip 😌 to avoid buyers remorse / regrets

Buying good quality items is a good idea. I make leather bags for a living. They last a long time. I get some back after 20 years to replace the zippers then they’re good for a few more years. I made the mistake of buying a vegetable peeler at the dollar store that lasted about a week before it fell apart

Interesting that you mention the Kindle as I think a lot of minimalists are huge fans of the Kindle. It illustrates that we are all different and should do what is best for our lifestyle. After many years of hearing people say that you definitely need all this stuff, and witnessing wedding shower gifts that were enough to fill up a huge house, and after actually being inside houses that had so much stuff, it was refreshing to hear someone say that they wished they hadn't of bought all that stuff. I've bought my share of unnecessary stuff, but I'll never do it again. Now I only buy what I truly need. And I am so much happier.

Recently discovered your channel and love your content and delivery. Your videos have a soothing and cinematic quality! Great points and lessons across the board. One additional consideration that I try to give to kitchen items is whether I already own something that meets the want or need that I think I’m resolving by buying the new thing. In your cheeseboard/platter scenario, I’d think to any existing large plates/cutting boards/trays that could serve an equal purpose. I’ve also gotten rid of most of my one-trick ponies in the kitchen and it’s just so much easier that way.

I found out about your channel 2 days ago. I absolutely love your channel and your content and what you stand for. I was always a minimalist but never knew there was a name for it. It has taken me around 6 or 7 years to finally get rid of the clutter in my bedroom. It took me another year and a half to redecorate it just the way I always imagined it in my head. I am slowly but surely also changing my wardrobe too. This was a good video. I have never liked perfumes or body spray. I wear essential oils too as does my boyfriend. He actually buys me my oils. I have 2 or 3 that I wear all the time.

I just wanted to let you know that I apply what you say in your videos. I look at life and things differently. I think I really needed this. I highly agree on the kitchen tools. So tempting to get all of them on one IKEA run, but it most of the time turns out being sooo annoying to use. I also haven't paid enough attention in the past when buying clothes and shoes. This year I decluttered (and mostly sold) quite a lot. I am going to try to keep in mind how much time and effort decluttering takes when considering spending my valuable money on an item. Also, considering if there is space for any item in my home is a good criteria, I agree! And yes, it's so sad if a plant dies :( I also try to carefullly choose plants for my home; and I like if I can get a plant by propagating, be it from a plant I already own or from someone else :)

I'm sorry, when you said high maintenance plants I had this imagine of a plant with a Louis Vuitton bag, a Burberry scarf, and some designer glasses saying something like "I ain't eaten no Miracle Grow! mmkay." I had the same experience with winter clothes when I moved to North Carolina. You certainly still need a jacket in winter, but I have this one gigantic winter coat for the few times I need to travel up North during the months of December through March...but I rarely use it. For that matter I have a ton of cloths that I just don't wear and frankly don't fit me. I remember my parents telling me to hold onto them because I'll "grow into them" which in my mind basically means I'll get fat when I get older...a reality I just have to accept. This winter holiday, I will definitely be decluttering. I'm taking a whole week off work to catchup on things and declutter. Great video Sophie! Like-357

hahaha you just made my day this comment! An orchid came to my mind when you described your version of a high maintenance plant. I have never been able to keep one alive for more than 2 weeks! I imagine if an orchid could talk, they would be sassy too :D I have so much clothes that also don't fit me as well. It's makes no sense, but somehow I've justified it in my mind. I will be doing the same this holiday season. Taking baby steps, but we'll get there. Happy Friday Alex

One thing I’m happy for today is that I know what kind of clothes fit my body type. I’ve made some mistakes there in the past. today I have some wardrobe rules like no worn out or shabby items get to stay, everything must fit me (I have one bin of seasonal and/or to small items that I deem impossible to replace) and when I add something new it have to be quality items in natural materials. I never like a clothing item of artificial material after the first wash… 👚

But still I have strong desire to live life as minimalist because I really want to simply my life and save more and more money for my future

Kindle, hands down... I looove paper-backs.... Really mostly gadgets (electronics in general, personal, kitchen, bath, etc...), clothes that don't flatter (wrong shape or color, or clothes that needed "adjusting"!!!, same for shoes), kids' toys (even though I have kept all o my kids' LEGO kits), Seasonal stuff: mugs, knick-knacks, throws, pillows...

Very interesting list Sophie! I can relate to the plants, kindle, and cheese board. We too bought all kinds of interesting plants that didn’t survive long. Was it us... or the plant? Maybe both! We have a small granite cheese board / wire cutter but we really prefer the smaller plastic boards with the cheese knife. We came close to purchasing a kindle because co workers had them. We realized we preferred paperbacks, magazines, and newspapers, especially if we lose them! We have bought our share of cheap kitchen utensils too. We bought some Pampered Chef( expensive) and they turned out to be good value. One of things we regret is the treadmill. It turned out to be a $300 dust collector that we seldom use since we prefer walking outside.

My heart breaks when I think of all the plants that I have killed in the past. Orchids are so beautiful, but I have not been able to take care of them! Maybe in the future :) funny how you said cheeseboard too. I love a good charcuterie platter and thought I needed to buy, but it wasn't necessary. Thanks Mark Happy Friday to you

"Minimalism is asking why before you buy." - For example, I am buying a set of pen because I am happy to use it daily:) "The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less." - The good circulation is giving up something instead of being afraid of.

For glass containers I just wash and reuse jars. Little tip for everyone. I so agree with perfume, just basic higyene is enough, I haven't bought it in a while. Also instead of shower gel I use just soap, it even makes my skin less dry and it lasts longer. Also heels as you get older as just less and less practical and just nice shoes are quite enough. For kitchen ustensiles unfortunately sometimes we have to buy cheap because we don't have enough money at the moment. What might help my parents and grandparents have a lot so I just take the things they don't need. What I also do if I really want something I wait a while to see if I would really use it and if this is something that I really must have. It can help with buyers remorse and more thoughful purchases. Good luck everyone!

I have too many regrets , one of which are fridge magnets, plates , frames of cities names nailed to my walls, not realising these are not easy to clean and make it very cluttered when you just want to see a plain wall. Thanks for sharing about ur kindle purchase....I had begun thinking of it but now I think it’s unnecessary. Books can be borrowed unless I really want it for work or study. Gosh. Don't want to mention the heels. As i'm getting older, i only wear flip flops hahaha. You know, especially in Singapore, thats what we wear. Now back in the Bay Area, I'm also flip flops everyday carrying the same habit. I don't have the cheeseboard at home, so i can't really comment on some of the items you have here. But i also hate owning winter clothes :) SG is same weather:) Thanks for sharing. It seems you released your video 1 day earlier than your scheduled? I believe it's Friday?? The reason why i am not doing 2 videos a week on my channel is that i'm afraid i cannot keep up with exactly the same date and timing every release. But i see you update on different dates every week. that gives me comfort to do 2 videos a week with less rigid schedules.
