Malaysia’s interest in joining BRICS Group may be ‘to in a sense, please China’, says analyst

Malaysia’s interest in joining the BRICS Group, which looks to challenge a world order dominated by Western economies, may partly be to please China and improve bilateral trade ties, says Dr Oh Ei Sun, principal adviser at Pacific Research Center of Malaysia. China is among the group’s original members. Malaysia’s move is also an expression of its displeasure of many Western powers' support of Israel in the conflict with Palestinian militant group Hamas, he tells CNA’s East Asia Tonight.

While the dis-jointed statement "half-baked analyst ... abound in Singapore" may ring somewhat true ; still some clarification is due. Half-baked or not, Singapore-based analysts are richly-groomed more to "goreng" the truth if not also to "rebus" the facts. Little that are really objective came out of this so called analysis, clearly the analyst in question thrives by begging the question. Actually Malaysia doesn't want to break down the West as much as it wants to BRICS it up ! 😂

Former PM of Malaysia , Mahathir Mohamad told WSJ in Sept , 2018 , " We have traded with China for nearly two thousand years . China never conquered us. We have relations with Europe. The Portuguese came to Malaysia in 1509. Two years later, they came and conquered us. So I always feel that I’m safer with China than with Western countries " . Current Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim told reporters in Australia 3 months ago -- If Western countries have problems with China "they should not impose it upon us", we do not have a problem with China .

Anwar has already made it clear why Malaysia joins BRICS. He said the Malaysian economy is growing and inflation is low, yet the national currency (the ringgit) is depreciating. There is no justification for an irrelevant external currency to distort the strong fundamentals of the Malaysian economy, he added. What Anwar trying to say is that Malaysia needs to be shielded from the negative effect arising from policies being adopted by another country and so de-dollarization through BRICS has to proceed.

You want the truth? Malaysia needs a strong and visionary leader to lead. We hope PM Anwar will be such leader like our President Xi. He has made a wise decision to join BRICS and Malaysia will benefit a lot. Malaysia has natural resources/agriculture that need a huge consumer and global manufacturer like China to buy, the USA is not capable without the mass manufacturing capability. China has many experienced and cheap infrastructure developers/manpower to help develop Malaysia's buildings, ports, railways, highways etc. We also have a huge manufacturing industry offering a wide range of consumer products from home appliances, furnishing, electric cars etc at a very competitive price to immediately bring down Malaysia's domestic inflation. China-majority-lead AIIB in collaboration with our state-owned banks can support Malaysia with competitive capital needs. The next economy millennium belongs to Asia and Asian countries should support China to lead.

PM Anwar has been constantly bowing to the CCP, we've seen this last year regarding the South China Sea dispute where clearly Malaysians weren't happy about it. It seems he's continue this trend by joining BRICS. Bowing to their own bullies in hopes to revive the economy especially the currency which has been on a steady decline. This is a risky move as we've seen from countries like Philippines who not too long ago, chose to bow to China as well, in return China constantly harassed their fishermen and troops in the South China Sea and now the Philippines are regretting that decision. You can only go so far negotiating and bowing to thugs.

Wonder why this Prof fails to mention the actual benefit of joining BRICS is to be INDEPENDENT OF THE US DOLLAR . To be totally independent , unlike Singapore which will be totally dependent on the dollar , a country must not be influenced by the dollar manipulations anytime someone wishes , and not be sanctioned in the event of displeasure of certain countries. The economic factors of siding with China is agreed very important too. ... in fact the benefits with China is all round and peace of mind. US is not dependable as their mood can change and the reserves in the dollar can disappear with the stroke of a pen. Globally every country should diversify and into RMB is good way.

Since ancient times, the peoples of Malaysia (ie Malaya, Sabah & Sarawak) have prosperous trading with excellent people-to-people relationship with China. Any busybody outsider countries attempt to push Malaysia to pit against China is utterly futile. In year 2023, Malaysia-China bilateral trade is about Rm300 billions ringgit & is going up, of which 24% of it are via Reminbi/Ringgit swap lines, US dollar to use is getting less. Latest Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia & Vietnam have expressed their interest to join Brics. So who is the next? 😊

A country enters into international relationship because of its own interest unless it is a colony or a proxy country for big powers . China and Malaysia will continue the spirit of goodwill from the time of Malacca Sultanate. Let us remember that in 1511 Portugal invaded Malacca, and in 1641 the Dutch took over and later the British and the Japanese in the second world war.

I think Indonesia & Singapore will not join BRICS in the near future because this country has a strong economic alliance with the US, European Union, Australia, Korea & Japan as long as China always intervenes militarily in the South China Sea , Indonesia still needs support from US, Indonesia is a Non-Aligned country and chooses to join the OECD economic group that is not affected by the politics of war, India and China have different interests may be difficult to succeed in the near future

SG is of no value to BRICS as 1) SG is small and not a resource-rich country able to be exploited nor able to satisfy China's development needs. 2) SG consumer market is too small to satisfy China's vast manufacturers' and exporters' needs. 3) SG doesn't have a large low to medium-manufacturing industry to be cannibalized by China's vast cheaper manufacturers. 4) SG's developed economy is now in the infrastructure preservation, recycling and enhancement phase unlike the initial development, so SG will not offer much infrastructure development or cheap land for China developers that desperately seek to expand overseas with China's domestic glut situation.
