I started snowboarding 4 months ago and had first day lesson my friend teaching me some bad habits (even thought he was very very helpful and I am greatful for the effort and time he put on me to help me out in the first day), came back home and found your youtube channel and since then you are my number one source of information to learn and improve my riding. I think I got in a pretty good level, posture and good habits, now considering only 4 months (12-15 days experience). All my friends are shocked how much I learned in such short experience, I am doing carves leaving only pencil line on the snow and even being able to ride switch (with not so good technique but for sure I will improve). I hope next year I am able to come to France for snowboard trip and thank you in person! You are awesome, thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Hey Malcolm I just wanted to say that I really appreciate finally finding good snowboarding coaching content on KZbin. I trained as a snowboard instructor in NZ nearly 20 years ago and I learned so much new stuff in that course about dynamic turns (as we called them), fall line edge changes, pedalling, board performance, turn initiation from the feet, movement across all three axes etc - but I've never really found any coaching videos that explained these topics. So much advice follows the 'steer by pointing where you want to go' approach which honestly is never going to get riders to the advanced level. Thanks for the great content!

Cheers Lindsay. Although I'm qualified through BASI I spent alot of time working at Treble Cone in Wanaka and trained with a load of NZSIA instructors. I really like their system and they definitely have the best instructor manual which you can download for free online. The torsional twist I keep referring to in most my videos is straight from the kiwi system!

Yeah boi this is the point where it really starts to change from being a passenger to driving your board, as previously discussed real game changer, i'm always dropping down-unweighting and up-unweighting, especially down, it's a necessary addiction to safe, stable and more controlled riding and also it feels so good to take control of the board that I do it for kicks even when I dont really have too 🤣🤣 !! Hey Veronica! Thanks for watching them back, I've actually been watching this video a bit too as I want to make one explaining the difference between down unweighted and retraction turns, in fact a few of the turns in this video (right at the end) are in fact retraction turns! 😱😂 So I can't wait to be able to snowboard here and make more vids. In france ski resorts won't be allowed to open until the end of jan so it'll be a little wait, but the quarantine will be lifted on the 15th of December so at least then I can go split boarding. Hope you're staying safe and well in Utah and have a great season. I would love to ride over there one day!
@veronical81034 жыл бұрын
@@malcolmmoore Are you talking about Dynamic Riding when you say Retraction Turns? People here complain about ice. That’s really cute. I just moved from a small hill in PA. Every blue trail is ice, crud and moguls. Those are not even the mogul trail. I have not seen real powder and it is already the best snow and widest, smoothest trails I have ever ridden. My top speed is increased by 5 mph here. It is heavenly. Happy and safe splitboarding! I will try that next season!
@malcolmmoore4 жыл бұрын
Dynamic riding isn't a phrase that pops up in the BASI or Kiwi system, but I imagine they're talking about the same thing! Low cross under turns is sometimes what they get called too. Enjoy that cold Utah snow!

@malcolmmoore4 жыл бұрын
@@veronical8103 yeah essentially, I think you would be able to see more of the 'retraction' movement if the rider was performing this kind of edge change in a carved turn. But the idea is that it basically allows your upper body, therefore centre of mass, to stay on a smooth path whilst your legs and board do all the hard work below! That was cool to see how they teach things in other countries ✌

What an amazing feeling to be pushed out of and bouncing on the pow, took a few tries but the snow told med when I made it right. My turns were all of a sudden quick and easy to make. I've been doing these turns for a while on nice smooth blue runs. Didn't know it was a down unweighted turn, but it now makes sense that it is what i was doing. I always pictured at as my body always being a fixed, low height above the ground, with my legs extending and retracting as the board flits from one side to the other underneath me. I hadn't thought that it could also help me on steeper terrain, but it makes sense that it would, as I shouldn't be expending energy and valuable fractions of a second hauling my entire body into an up-unweighted turn, when I can leave my body where it is, and push my legs into the turn then retract (unweight) as the board moves underneath me and the edge changes, ready to push into the next turn.

Hey Malcom! I think it's really cool that you touched on this matter. As Lindsay said, it's not often to hear instructors talk about it (let's believe because it is too technical for the average of learners) but it's crucial to know, understand and dominante these techniques if you wanna pregress to an advanced level; I mean: torsional twist, up-unweighted and down-unweighted turns. I'm not a instructor but I know a lot of them and I know that all those techniques are included on the progamm for the Snowboard Instructor here in Spain. You could talk about compression or releasing pressure on positive/negative slopes. It is mainly used in boardercross to gain or lose speed but it is very useful on the day basis and it gives you the ability to manage your speed everywhere like aproaching a jump or on flat runs. Greeting from Madrid SnowZone (the fridge =P)!!

Just found this channel, I have been absorbing as many resources and information along with practicing my carving since last season (first back in 10 years). I've been trying to do different things while carving like fast transitions at slower speeds where I'm comfortable, and I have found that almost kicking the board around from one edge to the next (extending legs, releasing pressure as shown here, non skidded) was very comfortable and fun. I thought I was perhaps doing an incorrect technique that wouldn't be sound at higher speeds/steeper grades, and to be honest even with all of the youtube content it's pretty tough assessing one's own riding without someone there for video or tips. I'm sure now that I'll be able to take what I've learned here and apply it so I can more confidently take on the icy steeps we frequently have here in Socal, probably starting only partway down steeper slopes and building up confidence from there. I know that dynamic riding with quick edge changes and high speed is where I need to go next to really improve my riding, cheers.

Nice! It's great to just get thinking about your riding, I've been doing alot of that over this summer as I wait to be allowed back on the slopes after lockdown here in France. I want to make more videos exploring carving further and I'm definitely going to do one on retraction turns, which are very similar to down unweighted turns just they keep your centre of mass on a smoother course, difficult to explain here, but they're super fun to do and hopefully I'll explain it all in a video soon! 🤙

You've got great style fella.. and give really good, clear instruction.. that's exactly as I learned it with CASI in '07.. there isn't a much better feeling than pushing out hard and getting popped out of a carve into a little air before landing on the other edge and whipping into the next carve, eh? - as fun as deep pow turns to me..

Absolutely! If you can ride properly the piste can be just as rewarding as powder. However, I would like to get back out to Canada again one day and ride some of your super cold blower pow!

Very nice... just had my first two days on a snowboard after watching some of your videos especially the essential technique one... I have a very solid skiing (telemark) technique and do exactly what you describe just skiing, especially in powder and moguls (foot movement is like you would use your bicycle pedals backwards)... so I thought I try the same on my turns while snowboarding and found it more stable and less likely to catch an edge as a complete beginner... funny now that two days later you are making a video about it... many skiers should watch this one too...

Its been a while since I've been on the Tele Skis! I used to do it a little in New Zealand when I had a flatmate who was obsessed by it, and now you mention it I can see the similarities!

I learned to snowboard in the late 1990s. I read a book and practiced the concepts in my bedroom. Basically, your head is the steering wheel, your front foot is the accelerator, your back foot is the brake. To steer, look where you want to go. When you turn your head you turn your shoulders which turns your hips and turns your knees. To go faster push your weight on the front foot - the board will turn down the fall line and pick up speed. To brake, skid out your back foot and look up the hill. Keep your hands out in front of you in your peripheral vision - don’t let the back hand go out of sight. As you go into a turn drop down - as you pull thru the turn drive up! I discovered later that I could steer with my front foot by pulling the front of the board around. That’s basically how I have ridden in over 25 years! Mind you I only ride in one direction - my bindings are +36 +18 and I have the stiffest boots and bindings available. All I do is carve...
@malcolmmoore4 жыл бұрын
Carving is the best! I do like the car analogy however I wouldn't want to promote the word 'skid as this is something we want to eliminate as much as possible from your riding. Carving is always better than skidding!
@zedatomic83424 жыл бұрын
Malcolm Moore - I agree but most new snowboarders start by doing skid turns and even advanced level boarders will slide out the back foot to break when necessary.
@malcolmmoore4 жыл бұрын

This is a great video. Super informative. I would add...that this type of turn is also ideal for riding moguls, since it frees your tail up somewhat to swing around the bump.
@malcolmmoore4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jon thanks for the comment glad you appreciated the video! And yes absolutely you're right about the moguls! I might make a video on retraction turns this season which are very similar, but can be useful in racing, however this is getting into the very geeky side of snowboarding! 😂 might have to get a flip board out to explain it!
@jonbrown94904 жыл бұрын
@@malcolmmoore lol! Geeky can be good. I like to use retraction turns on chopped up piste in flat light. I have found that some times in those conditions there will be chunder that you can quite see and adopting a more flexible lower body position will allow me to absorb and hits I might take without getting bucked and still being able to carve my turn( as opposed to getting bucked, losing edge contact and having to skid the turn). It's really great that you're putting out technical advanced content. A lot of youtube creators seem to skew towards the basic( not that there's anything wrong with it), but even beginners can benefit from seeing advanced technique in action. Great job! Really appreciate it. Thanks.

Your channel is definitely and by far my favourite snowboard channel, even though sometimes I get a bit confused because of all the theoretical terms lol. At the same time you give really good indepth explanations and that truly helps me a lot. I‘m able to follow your instructions pretty well, but when the conditions get harder (steeps, moguls, ice) I keep falling back in my old bad habbits (like counter rotation and skitting) again. 🤨 Which of course causes me to feel scared, have a bad time and often even fall. Do you have any advice for that? And could you once please make a video of snowboarding on steeps? Which turns to make and how to control your speed? Keep up the great work, you‘re awesome
