I love these intermediate lessons. Really helps me try to fix bad habits. This year I recorded myself for the first time and I realized I really need to work on closed turns. I'm all open turns and speed checks.

Help I'm the opposite - I'm all closed turns cos I get scared of catching an edge when I'm going fast and my board is near flat :(

That moment when you are going down a slope and see there's a flat section ahead and have to figure out when to have the courage to open up the taps to make it. I usually leave it just too late 😀

​@@cjyeh1 this might be sh!t advice but it worked for me. So I just to a steepish slope, picked up as much speed as I could pointing straight down the mountain for about 5 seconds and then came to a heel edge stop. keep doing it, then increased to 10 seconds, and so on... dont worry about prefect turns doing this, well i didnt, i just got over the speed fear. You'll soon realise its fine. I got up to 51mph last season. hopefully will beat it this season after doing this for a weeks on the slopes

Love your vids Malcom. You should make a video on proper binding form and placement to assist with turning.(i.e., binding degree on each foot, how close to the tail should your binding be on the back foot.)

Thanks to your videos I improved my carving to a level that, now I enjoy being on an edge. Each year I go to Les2Alpes, in summer, I spend at least one hour on that slope. For me, it is perfect for carving when the snow is on point 👍.

Malcom, I have skidded turns often because the pickup of too much speed basically ‘scares’ me. Are these closed turns the solution to that?

A skidded turn is probably still closed in the sense that your board is across the slope, but not in the sense that your momentum is going down the fall line and not across it. That's the key to using closed turns effectively, carrying your momentum across the slope and now down it.

Whenever i do closed turns on steeper terrain the moguls make me bounce up and down and by the time i get back to the lodge my knees are busted😂

IMO ,hardest part of speed control by turning is to leave the pencil line in steep terrain... effective edge and stiffness play a bigger role. Which board are u riding?

The real challenge is a client who are so used to closed turns that is really really difficult to make them do open turns. I've got my tricks, but still, not easy lol.

Maybe you should go over the super short semi-skidded turns you have to make when it's steep, you have no room to carve, and the snow goes from okay to icy, or you find a skier suddenly in your path, or you take a wrong turn and find yourself in field of moguls. Those are usually the "speed control" situations I have to deal with 😅

He has a vid on "STEEPER PISTES" from about 5 months ago. Basically turn early, faster, more frequently. Short turns as soon as you're on your edge. My personal tactic to surviving steeper moguls is to pick a line to edge-change along the tops of the moguls bumps where the snow is thickest, least icy. It's a gamble though if you skid too far down the front of a bump. Avoid that.
