Im a 31 yo male and 4th LEVEL RN student During clinicals on a pediatric floor, I entered the room and introduced myself to the mother and her 3 children. The youngest asked me, "Are you a Doctor?" I smiled and said, "No sir, I am a Nursing student." He laughed hysterically. I smiled again, looked at the mother, then looked at the little boy and asked, "why is that funny?" He said, "You're not a nurse. Only girls are nurses." ... ... It was at that moment, I realized my entire life was a lie.

I’m a male nurse and have been for 19 years. I’ve worked in almost every aspect of nursing, hospitals from MedSurg to ER to ICU to peds to post partum to OR to PACU, Nursing home, home health. Cool calm, empathetic, team players, no drama, no backbiting, no rumors, no hospital politics, no once a month Bad moods etc. etc. etc. Only one time was I fortunate enough to work a 12 hour shift with an all male staff, smoothest shift and my 19 years of nursing. God bless male nurses! We rock!! Pack your

Men who are empathetic, gentle, and kind in general are the strongest and toughest men I know. In fact, my favorite nurse practioner is a guy! He is such a good listener and good at what he does. We need more guys who are not afraid to be empathetic and we need more guys in nursing!
@x8lover
@x8lover 6 жыл бұрын
Its true that we can have as much empathy as our female colleagues. I recently nursed a patient through his last 48 hours and when he finally died I felt some of the pain that his family felt. Inside there was that sense of sadness even though death for him was a merciful release. As for gender bias things are a lot better in nursing that when I entered the profession in the early 80's. Then I was not allowed to nurse women and a career in midwifery was a definitely off the cards. The reason for the latter was just on empathy grounds because our anatomy was different. Men could not be good midwives because we would not be able to have empathy with a woman giving birth because we cannot do it ourselves. Also women in labour would not like a man looking after them. Well a woman in second stage of labour does not give a stuff about the gender of the person looking after them. They just want someone who is competent. And those making the rules often had not had children themselves and overlooked the fact that most doctors at the time were male. Thankfully these are now water under the bridge and the old barriers for men having a fulfilling career in nursing are gone. The only one now is NHS burn out through working on understaffed wards that have heavy workloads..

Josiah, what are your thoughts about a 42 year old man making a career change to nursing? Is age a barrier in your opinion?
@JosiahShoon
@JosiahShoon 7 жыл бұрын
guidoth1 I'd say I've seen it, and although I didn't see him when he was brand new I work with him now and he's a role model to many. You come into nursing with a lot of life experience, a unique way to learn and an understanding of the working world. Personally I've never seen age as a barrier especially in those with positive attitudes. Keep me apprised. I'm sure you'll do well in whatever you choose.

Sounds good, Josiah. Thanks for the encouraging words. After 12+ plus years of working in a cubicle, I know for sure I'm meant to work in a setting where I'm engaging directly with people. I'm drawn to nursing; especially pediatrics because I have a heart for children. I'm just in a place where I want to make a wise decision. I will be shadowing a few male nurses, in different settings, in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully that helps me in the process, along with asking with asking questions of people like yourself, and researching the field. Exciting times! I just have one more question; what would you say are some traits that will help you be a successful nurse?

Planning to stay for a year and then transition to Step Down before going to the MICU. I appreciate your passion and perspective.... my first career was as a Broadway performer and ballet dancer, so I've always felt like a unicorn as a straight male in my chosen professions. My unit is probably 90 plus percent women, but I'm sure it's a whole different story in the various ICUs at my hospital. You got a new subscribe from me.... keep spreading your voice, brother!!

I want to destroy the nursing home stereotype that they're unsafe and a place for people to slowly wither away. Currently in the middle of my last tax season before I start a CNA program this summer and begin working as a CNA to learn the in's and out's of delivering the best possible care to seniors.

The "Why didn't you go to medical school?" comment was something that my sister had to deal with when she decided to go to pharmacy school. The thing is, she actually considered medical school at one point. She even shadowed physicians and she decided that she did not want to be one. Like you, my sister could have gone to medical school if she wanted to. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to be a physician, but still wanting to be a healthcare professional.

There is definitely discrimination towards men. But it can be overcome. Biggest problem is there is no men in education or supervisory roles in nursing. So as a man, you will NEVER be making more than female nurses even with slightly more experience. Sure if you have been a nurse for 10 years and a female for 2. But if it’s close the female supervisor will never pay you more. I have seen big monetary bonuses given to female nurses for no reason that was explained. I have never seen a male get one. Other than on hire or retention which is equal.
@77tubuck

No, I don't want to be a male nurse. I want to be an accountant. Mathematics was always my best subject. I was studying to be an accountant but thanks to Justin Trudeau I was transferred into nursing. Yeah, they just transferred men out of STEM programs into nursing. Female nursing students were transferred into STEM programs. It's a mess, students are taking the money they are suppose to be spending on text books and just going out partying.

I'm a man and I have been working in the medical field as a CNA for eight years. I keep thinking about nursing school, but I see all the BS that goes into the job and the drama, and I can say that it almost doesn't seem like it would be for me. As you mentioned, working in an environment with mostly women can just be draining with the excessive gossip, drama and cattiness. Honestly, there are times I really want to get out of the medical field in general and try something different. But, I have tried retail and food but neither of those are for me, either. Honestly, it's just easiest to stick with what I know for the time being.

Sabbath keeper? I grew up STRICT SDA, and there are nurses in the religion everywhere who keep Sabbath. I know this may seem like an ignorant question, but is possible for me to pursue this endeavor even if I really struggle with Math and Science? I dont feel smart enough. My goal is to be a Pediatric Nurse. I love kids.
@JosiahShoon
@JosiahShoon 6 жыл бұрын
Michaelnolan1988 One of my favorite quotes of all time: “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” My point is don’t let anything get in front of your passion, and if that’s to be a pediatric nurse I’m begging you to go for it! Let me be clear it’s not easy. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy and I can almost guarantee it will not be easy, BUT if it’s worth it? If you’re passionate about it? I highly encourage you to go for it. Math and science are often confused as being exclusive for “smart people” but a lot of the time all that a person needs is repetition in them. Meaning practice. You just have to do them over and over again and that often helps people succeed in those subjects. So please. Chase your passion, kids need someone like you.

Bro, thank you. I'm a male nurse and love it. Being a nurse shouldn't be bound to a specific gender. Seriously made me tear up.

Well said bro and out of the heart. Thank you for this video. This video gives me extra courage when I start my higher nursing education next month. The stereotypes still prevail here in the Netherlands as well...

I completely agree with this video man. I'm an ICU nurse over in the UK and there are a very small amount of male nurses on my unit. We get more stigma from staff than the patients about being male nurses. Love the channel and the passion for the profession man!!

Josiah, I think you’re a most intelligent and sympathetic young man, and I have no doubt that you are well placed in your vocation. Thank you so much for your service. As I have no criticism of your purpose with this video, the substance of it, I shall address some criticism I have of your profession, irrespective of gender, in general. Nurses these days want and expect twelve hour shifts, presumably because you like the four days off. I think this is reckless and a possible danger to patients. I was in a hospital overnight only once so far, not counting birth and tonsils as a young child. I appreciate the vast responsibilities incumbent upon all medical professionals, physicians and nurses. It is a very stressful profession, more than enough so without having to fight fatigue which can affect mood and judgment grievously in any person. (People snap at others easily when tired; that's true for anyone.) I would not characterize myself as a “difficult patient.” I was pleasant and appreciative. But twice I got yelled at (not screaming mad, just snidely) by two nurses-one of whom was obviously very stressed-for things I did on those two occasions. I felt like saying: “Listen, I don’t think you understand our relative positions. I and my insurance company are paying fifty grand a day for me to be here. I am profit; you are overhead!” But I didn’t. I restrained myself out of consideration of this stress and responsibility you all feel. But it does irk me that medical professionals are the only people I know that act as if they are doing you a favor for taking your money (a great deal of it)! Compromise and accept four ten hour shifts a week. Three days off is sufficient. I don’t know why state nursing boards tolerate this dangerous practice. It’s as if patients don’t matter.

Well spoken fella. Sounds interesting, but I think it's a bit too late for me to enter this field. Currently 32 , a personal trainer in one of the beach cities of LA. I enjoy everything that's medical/health/fitness related, as well as helping others. . thought about this path, but needed more info to see what comes with it. .

I’m just finishing my pre reqs for nursing school. Two kids at age 27, and my wife just started school for nursing as well. At the beginning I thought a male nurse but now my mind set is different. It’s like you said female cops fire fighters. We live in a different society and it should be equal. Even though it may seem like not.

Roberto Blanco the insane amount of stability and income opportunities you have in the career of nursing to provide for your family is often enough to get past stereotypes. The CEO at one of my hospitals was a nurse who went back and got an MBA, now making well over a million dollars a year. There’s no end to the possibilities. I wish you and your whole family the absolute best!

Josiah Shoon yeah It’s endless possibilities. I’m hopeful to get into icu so later I can do CRNA. I just want to do it more now because my grandpa passed away a month ago today from COVID and I wasn’t able to be there with him. I at least want to make those who are on their last days feel as comfortable as possible.
