Of course there were a variety of changes in Walt Disney’s original 1959 retelling of Sleeping Beauty, but one of their most notable changes was expanding the character of the original old woman who cursed the princess. Disney reinvented this character into who we now know as one of the greatest villains of all time: Maleficent. Through her elegant design, dramatic and flamboyant animation and unlimited arsenal of magic powers at her command, Maleficent is truly the mistress of all evil.

I discovered in an older version of the story, fairies invited to the castle were expected to dine off gold plates. The kingdom had only 12 such plates so they didn't invite the 13th fairy to the baby's celebration. The 13th fairy wasn't evil, just insulted by the kingdom so she cursed the child

Also, while i did like the movie, some of the parts I felt deviated for the worse in my opinion, like the princess'es father being the villian, and her bird being turned into the "dragon". She was slapped in the face for being the only one not invited even though she was more powerful than all the people and fairies attending combined. I could have screamed when the live-action Maleficent was given a 'good side'. Maleficent isn't a mortal, she's a powerful, magical being. And in the fabulous, exquisite cartoon version, she's chosen to use her powers for the darkest of purposes. The great thing about fairy tales is that within the basic framework, you can make the story your own. So I was glad that whilst Disney used a mixture of Perrault and the way Tchaikovsky told the story in his ballet, as a framework. They still made this their version of the story. Particularly Maleficent. This most magnificent villain isn't a poor misunderstood soul. She's pure evil, she knows it and she likes it that way. She takes satisfaction in being The Mistress of Evil and when she tells Prince Philip that he'll be battling her and all the powers of Hell, then she's proudly revelling in what she can do. This fairy doesn't need a good side. She's a deliciously full blooded baddy, who dies in a fair fight against the forces of love and light. This is a fairy tale after all. It's a place for archetypal characters. That's how fairy tales have worked for thousands of years. Why mess with a winning formula?

It can even be argued that these “sympathetic” counterparts pretty much ruined their characters. Examples of this include Maleficent and Thanos. Maleficent is the Mistress of all Evil. Thanos doesn’t give two shits about anything or anyone, except for his love, Death. Then you have Pseudo-Maleficent who was some sort of sympathetic betrayed dark angel, fairy... thing... who at some points has some sort of sexy appeal or something (YUCK!!). And then you also have Pseudo-Thanos who was some sort of sympathetic character who in the long run cared about the universe, and had no real crush on an entity of death (Eeuugghh)....

I have LOVED Sleeping Beauty ever since I saw it as a child. I could tell there was something different about it, the way it looked and sounded, before I was able to understand the heavy process it underwent to be a different product. And as much I liked fairies and cute animals and pretty princesses, Maleficent was immediate in my favorite list. As I grew and collected Disney merch and watched all the films and even plotted to have a Maleficent tattoo (that didn't happen...yet) I had a fondness for her equal to my favorite princess Ariel. I supposed I just like the oddity of them. One being a mermaid, the other a dark fairy with green skin. But i loved how elegant Maleficent is, how poised and graceful unlike the loud mouth, foul tempered Queen of Hearts, or vain Evil Queen, or white trash Madame Medusa. She stands above, with a carefully raised eyebrow and a smirk. I have made it my goal to have a standing Maleficent collection. I find it difficult in my area to obtain much live action merch-especially the dolls, so the majority of my collection is the green skin version-which is my favorite. I have dolls, little figurines, purses, wallet, mugs, watches, pins, McDonald's toys, and key chains just to name a few. I not only love her human form, but her dragon form as well. And I actively search for Dragon items as well. The live action was cool, but a completely different Maleficent. And I didn't bother with Descendants. One preview was enough to convince me it was crap. Not surprised that it's getting a sequel since most crappy films do. And I have no idea how they're going to play out the sequel of the live action film. But hey, it just means more merch on the shelves! I always thought as a kid, when watching Sleeping Beauty, that she has a past with young King Stephen, like they had a romantic past and he snubbed her for Queen Leah. And I thought maybe the Three Good Fairies tried to take her in and raise her but she proved too strong and stubborn to handle and she turned away from them, and made her goblin army for companions. Ravens can live long lives so it's not a stretch that Diablo could've been by her side since he was a hatchling. I was going to write my own origin story for her, but was beaten to the punch. And now I feel that if I try to write it now, I'll end up being too influenced by the film. That's ok though, it's not like I don't have a thousand more ideas floating in my head.

Just do it. while this movie is okay (for me I guess), it wasn't that groundbreaking like The Wizard of Oz or any other Disney classic. You should do your own origin story. Try make it better than the original and don't worry about being too influenced by the movie. Especially since you really care for the character Maleficent which mean you have a passion that drive you.

I definitely prefer the more humanized version of her (specifically the 2014 movie), but I think that's because I never enjoy "evil for the sake of being evil" characters. There are ALWAYS reasons that someone turns bad. "Evil for the sake of being evil" characters are boring and plain to me. To watch them fall to darkness, or to just learn of how they got there, is so much more entertaining and makes me actually care a little about them, in the sense that I know things didn't have to be the way they turned out. I look at Scar and think of how, had things been different, he could have been a great and powerful lion, and an asset to the pride. Just as an example.

Interesting overview. I mentally planed out a Maleficent backstory, showing her not as a fairy but as a dragon. Born and raised over 1000 years ago, she leaves the nest and finds love and has a brood of eggs. She is then attacked by the then "One True King" who kills her partner and steals her eggs, meaning none of them will hatch. Maleficent learns of magic from another dragon, and then buries herself in study to learn dark arts and how to make herself transform into a more human form. She takes revenge on the king, claiming his castle as hers. The events of Sleeping Beauty come by some years later. The spell put on the sword that kills her, in fact cleanses her of her darkness and bitterness, and she becomes her more peaceful self from before the original attack. She goes into exile from this kingdom, gains wisdom, and guards the last of the dragon younglings, awaiting the next age of dragons.

Maleficent seems to fit more into the traditional fairy folk lore (not necessarily pure evil, but demand absolute respect) while the others seem more the Victorian Era views on them. the king shamed her by literally not inviting the powerful fairy to a public event that even the lowest class person was probably allowed to go to. Mind you she tried to be polite at firstand give the king a short windowed second chance, but the fairies and the king threw it back into her face; thus confirming what side they've chosen. She took it as a sign of war, but still; it makes no sense why she seemed solely focused on getting back by killing Aurora.

In ancient civilisations the emperor of a big nation if they were insulted by an emperor inferior could demand the death of his entire family and all 12 generations of separation eradicated. Maleficent was slightly merciful by allowing Aurora to live til her 16th birthday as a lesson to the next children of King Stefan that they should think before insulting their betters. It's like if Thanos was merciful he would be just like Maleficent. He would humiliate not destroy if the other person has something of value or is of use.

@@LordMortanius With the mixture of Christianity you might see it that way but older magical laws would dictate propriety over alliances. You cannot insult an enemy no matter how you feel about them unless you wanted war. Both the Unseelie and the Seelie courts would have bowed down to these laws, they would have just tried to find loopholes in the law to pull pranks. In this case Maleficent was not wrong. She was offended and she called for war. She challenged the mortal king to save her reputation and status.

My version of Grimm's Fairy Tales, said that the 13 Wise Woman (That's what they called the Fairies) was very old, lived far away, and didn't talk to anyone, so everyone thought she was dead. I loved the live-action Maleficent movie! It portrays Maleficent as not and evil being, but a misunderstood fairy who was abandoned and betrayed by someone she thought to be her friend. She takes revenge on him by cursing his daughter, who over the yeas as she spied on Aurora and the three fairies, grew to love the child who was much like herself. And when the curse finally takes hold, she is the one who revives Aurora by kissing her forehead as a form of a last goodbye when the prince's kiss didn't work. In the end, Maleficent gives Aurora the title of Ruler of the Moors as she finally saw herself as an unfit ruler due to Stefan's betrayal. She is finally at peace, knowing love again, but in a different form.

I just have to say this, I think that the Live Action Maleficent was a huge misstep and I honestly don't like how "human" she's made. Maleficent isn't human, she's a Fae they generally don't care about humans but if offended by one they will destroy that person's life for a petty reason. Not being invited (even if on accident) to a christening is enough to make her mad, the Live Action Movie tried way too hard to make her sympathetic.

I found a comic about it and what happened is there were 13 fairys and the 13th fairy was bad luck sense she was the 13th fairy, so at Aroras birth date she said I'm sick of people saying I'm bad luck and flew away then one day when the princess was walking through the she saw the fairy and asked her what she was doing here and she said hiding from your people and sense she was hiding she didn't want any one to find her and she hated princess so she cursed the princess and she pricked her finger and fell asleep and the prince came saved her then when she realized what happened she took a sword on a hunt to kill the fairy and she did the end it's a really different from the Disney book

There's something that confused me on the movie. remember when Merryweather said that she would like to turn Maleficent into a fat toad? well Fauna said that their magic can't do things like that, and that their magic can only grant something that brings happiness and joy or something like that. But yet, near the end of the film, Merryweather turned the bird into a statue and Flora made Prince Phillip's sword stab through the heart. How does that bring happiness and joy? You know what I mean?

I think The Black Cauldron and Sleeping Beauty are linked. Firstly Maleficent and the Horned King obviously have horns, so I feel they are related maybe brother and sister, secondly they both seem to live in the forbidden mountain at different times, so we see that Maleficent puts the Curse on Aurora then she goes into hiding for 16 years and leaves her minions and her brother in the forbidden mountain to look for baby Aurora. That is where they 2 films cross over, the 3 Fairies stay in the abandoned cottage that has been abandoned by Dorben and Taran in search of the Horned king and the Cauldron. Aurora is being brought up by the fairies and they originally call her Eilonwy and give her the bauble as protection and she fantasises about being a Princess so she tell everyone she is. While in the care of the 3 fairies she gets kidnapped by the Horned Kings Dragon and left in the dungeon when he cannot locate the black cauldron. So therefore The Black Cauldron plays out and the Horned King dies, Aurora/Eilonwy is returned home to the fairies who make her forget what happened and call her Briar Rose. Maleficent returns home and uses her powers to resurrect the destroyed castle and then we all know what happens next, that explains why Maleficent did not know they had been looking for a baby for 16 years as the Horned King did not link Eilonwy and Aurora together and was too interested in locating the Cauldron.

I'm actually reading the classic Grimm brothers stories right now, and they are very confusing..have you ever read them I know a lot of theorist talk about re original tales but I've been reading them and they usually only bring up certain things like they actually haven't read the original. But anyways I'm glad you did the story of Maleficent because the take of Sleeping beauty really isn't about the princess even though the plot is based in her but idk \_😐_/.

I love the good old all evil maleficent, she was cold, elegant and terribly dangerous. AJ did an excellent performance but I miss the cold elegance of the animated, which remember me of some of the femme fatale actresses of that time, the voice (same of Lady Tremaine) is spectacular

Strange thing is, as I got older, I always thought Maleficent was someone who was seen as too dark, too dangerous, and too creepy to be acquainted with. Like an social outcast that belongs to a bunch of misfits, like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer for example, only in Maleficent's case is far more evil. Her showing up and getting informed that she wasn't invited to Aurora's birth tells me that she's not accepted by the kingdom and the fairies around her. And that's why she let's her revenge on cursing Aurora which would pretty much mean she's somewhat hurt. Sure Maleficent had a different life style and trained in the dark magics and lust for power and all the evil, but had things been different it would've worked out. Kingdom Hearts kinda furthers my point as she pretty much sees her allies as acquaintances, with examples like Pete and Hades. Sure the Disney villains prefer not to have any friends and only lackies to do the villain's bidding, but it's not like villains can't have any friends at all. Look at Gaston as he has a best friend Lefou, or as close as a friend as Gaston could have as he gives him orders on what to do. Horace and Jasper are pretty much pals in 101 Dalmatians, and Dr. Facilier has "friends on the other side" with the evil VooDoo spirits in Princess and the Frog. It shows that ones heart doesn't start off good or bad, it depends as they grow as an individual beings based on how life has treated them.

While I love Maleficent and the way she portrays her style of evil, I really don't think she was always that way. She is a fairy after all. And while I think the movie could have been better, it does give us a good insight as to why she became evil. Evil is never born, it's made, and I think Maleficent is no exception.

my perspective on her, especially in the 1959 version, is as an embodiment of the dark, sexual feminine's or shadow's rage at being denied a place in the existence of a human being (Aurora). the only reason she expresses for her casting the curse is that she is not invited to the party. a true human life is incomplete without everything that Maleficent represents. before Maleficent casts the curse, Aurora is set up to be an unreal and perfect being, not a human being. as an embodiment of the purest form of this 'darkness', Maleficent wishes 'death' upon Aurora; a kind 'not-being' as opposed to the desire for 'always being' that the other fairies wish for her. they mitigate the curse to a sleep, rather than a full death. the light balances with the dark to allow for a transformative metamorphosis, from which she can only be awakened by waiting receptively for that which is truly meant for her (represented by Phillip). she is then able to live this more difficult but more authentic reality, rather than just accept any old thing/person that may be attracted to her by her beauty, etc... Maleficent expresses the rage of the shadow/sexuality/dark feminine denied, which only increases as it is ignored, or feared. she is not a vain character like the Evil Queen from Snow White, she is ferocious and angry. all of the characters ignore, avoid, and/or fear her, including Prince Phillip, right up to the final moment where his sword lights and he faces her in her most ferocious form as a dark dragon. Phillip and his sword represent bravery and awareness ('light'). he finally acknowledges her and her power and 'shines a light' on her, revealing she is just a shadow on the floor. not just something to be ignored, but a dramatic and life changing influence that must be recognised, as is made evident by the drama she brings to the entirety of the story, and, in particular, to the first 16 years of Aurora's life up until she is 'pubescent', sexually capable and wiser from the struggles that derailed the 'perfect' life that everyone wished for her, before she could even have any say about that life. Aurora would not have met the Prince in the correct way for the both of them if not for the change brought to her life by Maleficent. Aurora's dress flashes between colours at the end of the film to show that she is no longer one dimensional. purity cannot, and should not, be the only aspect of a real life.

No. Purity couldst rightfully indeed by the one aspect of life. The Sleeping Beauty is eer pure and perfect regardless of anh 'curse' placed upon her person. Rather. Without the curse, the Beauty wouldst hath met The Prince within the correct fashion, via an arranged marriage which were a common occurrence within ancient times and yet doth occur within the world.

The Maleficent movie was a travesty. They undermined their most powerful villain and completely destroyed a valuable princess by effectively saying that Aurora had nothing to contribute to the universe, and robbed their most heroic prince of all the goodness they'd given him. Just so they could do a villain movie and and with the over used "true love doesn't have to be romantic!" Storytelling fad. The 1959 movie is my favorite Disney movie of all time and I've spent years analyzing the implications of its events- as such I can't approve of the changes Disney made. I don't think I've ever been more let down by a movie.

I'm taking a class right now about fairytales and we're watching Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent and I am so glad someone agrees! The movie is fine and all, but I also feel like you can't change Maleficent, a villain that seriously calls herself the Mistress of all Evil. Give her a painful backstory, but don't change the plot of the story we already know. She didn't break the curse, you can't change that.

My love for the Maleficent movie aside, what exactly are you saying Aurora herself contributed to the original film? She was a sheltered girl raised by fairies, who she occasionally played very weak tricks on, who danced around and sang with animal friends in the forest and then Philip was a kid who gave her a gift as a baby but neither really realized who the other was as they willingly danced around singing to one another in the forest. Then she went back home, got bewitched by the curse, and fell asleep while he by a stroke of luck got out of imprisonment to slay a dragon for a girl he literally just met, one he would not have probably been able to win against without fairy magic. It's almost as cliché as Snow White, but if you can say that she or he contributed more than that to the universe, please let me know.
