Well, yeah; considering how the fairy tale that the Disney version adapted had the humans invite the amount of people by the number of gold plates they have, and that they thought the fairy who wasn’t invited was dead, can you blame Maleficent for it? I highly doubt whoever the fairy was in the original story would be viewed as evil. In fact, it’s the fault of the good fairies, as not only did they try counteracting with the curse and put the rest of the kingdom to a slumber, but the curse lasted a century and the prince that would break the curse wouldn’t show up until a century has passed with the castle covered in brambles.

this IS actually what would ahve happened, according to what we know about local fairy lore of the region. She would have bestowed upon the princess a gift from her particular court, and while the gift may not have been deemed completely useful by human standards, it would have elevated her power and status in the fairy world

Sure the motivation is different but the ambition is higher and due to the gift or said cunning and ambition would come from an evil and yet elegant place. That and considering the three other blessings (with Maryweather's often being speculate to be grace) it would make sense for her to be less crude about her plays than Malty which in a way makes her a bit more dangerous

Elenor Audley was so talented that it’s hard to believe she initially turned down the role of Maleficent because of tuberculosis. The fact that Disney waited for her to recover shows how convinced they were that she was perfect she was for the role. And why not? Maleficent left such a mark in the Disney canon that wouldn't be with the exception of Cruella- until the 80s, that we manage to get a truly competent and threatening villain again with Ursula at the tail-end of the decade, with Sykes, Ratitgan, and The Horned King being argued as steps in that right direction.
@camilledinesen2292
@camilledinesen2292 Жыл бұрын
I think The Horned King and Ratigan are right up there as villains. They just come from more underrated films. (One could argue The Horned King is actually pretty ineffectual and doesn't do much but he has such imagery.) Especially Ratigan, who should be more iconic then he is, but I guess mouse Sherlock Holmes just doesn't have the branding power.

You brough some very good points. The idea that Maleficent is never happy and needs to be evil to be happy makes her even more terrifying but in some ways a bit tragic figure without making her into a sympathetic character like the live action movies. On one hand it's scary that she enjoys all this chaos and evil she spreads, changing from one evil goal to another, but on other it's easy to feel kind sad because, even if she wins, her proud and happiness will never last and she will still be unhappy and full of hate.

Good thing they gave Maleficent a raven because ravens are very smart birds on par with parrots and if you want a smart bird, but you have no access to a parrot, you go with a raven, a crow, or a magpie, i.e. corvids--that and because ravens obviously give off an ominous vibe, befitting of a villain like Maleficent since they're all black; parrots, while smart, tend to be too colorful and too comical to deliver on that visually. Nevermore.

Seriously, Maleficent is just so classical a villainess that she's an icon alongside Jimmney Cricket, Tinkerbell, and one could say Mickey himself. Even though she wasn't the focus, I thought it would be fun to mention that Maleficent shared the same original voice actress with Lady Tremaine. I always like to think of those two as foils to one another. One represents fantastical evil while the other represents all too real mundane evil. You know it would be interesting to think that Tremaine is the reincarnation of Maleficent and that is why she's such a major asshole. And as Cindrella 3 showed she would be as dangerous as Mal if she got her hand on real magic and has a petty streak like her.

My guess on why Japan loves Maleficent is because of their love for Dragon Quest, the original JRPG. Maleficent, with her horned head, actuallly looks really similiar to the Demon/Dragon Lord, the final boss of the game (really most games in the series). They really love the Hero-Demon Lord dynamic which may be why she's so popular as a villian there since she's just this evil sorcoress.

I tend to disagree that Maleficent is pure evil, and that's it. Maleficent is a fae. While movies like Tinkerbell paint them to be harmless and pure, folklore form before the Victorian era paints a much different picture. In ancient times, they tended to be morally grey, pure evil or mischief makers with a completely different set of morals than us humans. Some folklore even speculates that they are fallen angels. They love messing with humans for the hell of it. And they tended to be like mythological gods where they had over the top emotions and reactions to things like cursing people for small mistakes. Maleficent fits that to a tee. She is dark and twisted, but so are a lot of other fae. She's kinda like an alligator in the sense that she's acting upon her true nature and instinct instead of operating instead a set of normal human mortality like a lot of other Disney villains. Outside of that, the king and queen DID not invite her to an important political event for no reason other than she looks scary. If that were me, I would be very pissed off. Cursing a new born is going too far. But let's face it, if that happened to a real life human, a move like that would've had huge repercussions on a political scale like starting a war.

A common trend I’ve noticed in these early Disney princess movies is that a lot of the focus is on the “goofy/quirky side characters”; the Seven Dwarves from Snow White, the Mice from Cinderella, and here, the Fairies. They end up being more interesting as they’re allowed to have depth, flaws or quirks (personalities basically), which princess/princes typically lack/can’t have for image reasons. This can be applied for the villains too, and why they’re so memorable. That’s just my take on this observation anyways.

I think that Maleficent's evil origin is revealed in her last spoken line when she says "all the forces of Hell." She can't feel joy, or happiness, or anything and her malevolent nature stem from the fact she isn't just a dark fae. No she literally gained her raw magical power from a pact with hell and likely the devil himself. When she unleashes her magical power in full how does it manifest? A dragon, a fire breathing dragon. And what is the devil described as in the Bible? A dragon. It is my belief that she sold her very soul for the power she has, giving her the same outlook in her existence as Dracula in Van Helsing.

What frustrates me so much about "Maleficent" is not only did it soften Maleficent's "I'm evil just because" original personality, but it half-assed the backstory it gave her. It set up the reason for her bitterness, being betrayed by her former lover, and yet after the scene where she curses Aurora, there's no sense of the previous chemistry between her and the king. If you watched the film from that scene onward, you never would've guessed they were ever friends/lovers. Moreover, Aurora's mom was completely wasted as a character. She seemed to sense there was something between her husband and Maleficent but dies offscreen without ever questioning or confronting him about it. I picture this version of the king marrying his wife as yet another act of ambition and, if that were the case, it would be so powerful if the queen uncovered Maleficent's past and drew parallels between it and her own fate of being lured into a purely political, loveless marriage. The film could've done so much more with the "Women standing up to being wronged are cast as antagonists when the true villains are the ambitious men who did said wronging in the first place" theme it clearly was trying to go with.

Thank you for doing this amazing retrospective series. I can clearly see why Maleficent has so many fans. Very interesting character history. Personally I would have called the second live action movie Maleficent vs the mistress of Evil; since the queen is meant to be the real villain there. Maleficent always delivers an amazing performance. She certainly knows how to bring down the house!

it makes sense Diablo was made more competent and serious. It gives him a different feel from past and future minions, Maleficent would need someone more competent to bounce off of. Plus, she already ahs bumblers in the Goons, so having another bumbelr would be superfluous.

I've been waiting for this, a lovely look at the Mistress of All Evil. One of my favorite villains when I was but a small tot sitting hypnotized by our collection of VHS' Also, thank you for confirming my worries about the live action movies and that deciding not to watch them was a good idea. If there is one thing that is truly getting under my skin, it's all these stories that are based on a villain in name only, but more about someone who doesn't want to be a villain or is only a villain because "oh the story is told from the wrong perspective." I get that Wicked was popular, but not even the glitz and glamor of Broadway can hide the streching it does to fit it's narrative. (BTW, I have indeed seen it on Broadway.) It's a trend that just keeps building steam and piles of the bodies of evil in it's wake. If I've said this on a previous video, I apologise, but it really is a sticking point for me.
@BlueAmpharos
@BlueAmpharos Жыл бұрын
That was what I didn't like about Wicked to begin with. While I like complex characters, assassinating the overall plot just to shoehorn something to make them more relatable is not something I like. Expanding on something or character redemption arcs are good, or maybe prequels with a character arc with them starting good and slowly becoming evil and showing why they are that way could work, but don't remove what made the original movie good to begin with. Some villains might actually work with adding details to the original from their perspective, but only if there's more grey area in their actions.

It's also possible Maleficent didn't appear as upset as one would think about Diablo being turned to stone is that she likely had a means of changing him back, but simply put the priority of stopping the protagonists over that. If he's stuck at the castle as stone, she could return and change him back once things settled, but if he went back out and was turned to stone somewhere else, she may be unable to find him or he could be destroyed (either from falling or getting smashed in some way)

I personally don't think she's evil, she's just Unseelie fae. Like, highly dangerous but generally passive if left alone. And even Seelie fae are absolutely vicious when slighted--a royal family should absolutely know what happens when you are rude to a faerie. They don't have our moral compasses, and the strict rules of etiquette is the law of their land.

While that interpretation is fair and understandable, you'd then have to take into account the Three Good Fairies 😅. It's pretty obvious that Disney made the film's plot be about the battle between the forces of good and evil. Maleficent was created for the sole purpose of being the embodiment of malevolence within the world of Sleeping Beauty, just as much as how Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather were meant to embody benevolence. Otherwise, there wouldn't have been any reason for them to name her "Maleficent", which means to do harm or impose malice onto others. Plus, most of Disney's fairies, with Tinker Bell being in the gray area 😆, were all created and intended to be good entities within the realms of their respective narratives. As Colin put it in this video, Maleficent herself just seems to be the odd one out of this group, being the only one to be referred to as a dark or evil fairy.

I find it fitting Diablo is Maleficent's smartest servant. Ravens are intelligent birds, confirmed by research to be as smart as monkeys. It's also a common theme in fantasy for a witch or wizard to have a raven companion, an idea possibly inspired by the god Odin from Norse mythology.

For Maleficent's involvement with Kingdom Hearts, she is actually the only Disney villain to have anything to do with the overarching plot. I'll explain HER timeline, which jumps around the entire KH timeline, so I'll say when each part of the timeline takes place in regards to 1, 2, and 3. 1. Maleficent is seen in her story in Birth By Sleep. (Before 1 chronologically.) She learns of other worlds thanks to Terra and is interested in the power of the 7 pure hearts from the Disney Princesses, and begins to gather all the Disney Villains. 2. Kingdom Hearts 1 happens for her. However when she is stabbed by Riku, he 'unlocks' her heart, allowing her to time travel when she is defeated as the rules of this universe allow. 3. She travels back to the very start of the kingdom hearts timeline in an effort to learn more about darkness and whats going on and all that. However she finds she is trapped in a digital version of her own story. She laments this fact until one of the 13 primordial darknesses leads her out and tells her everything it can about how the world works, the box, ext... She is then sent into the future using a time capsule when she escapes to the real world. However she needs a body to return to. 4. Kingdom Hearts 2 happens, with Maleficent from the past now returned into the actual timeline and knowing more than even Yen Sid on how the world works. 5. Maleficent, knowing digital worlds can hold power thanks to her traveling to the past, attempts to hack and take control over Jimmy's journal. This fails. (This is directly after 2) 6. Thinking about what the primordial darkness told her, and knowing it will reveal itself soon, Maleficent tells Pete to look for the Master of Master's box which may contain the Book of Prophecies in KH3, a book she believes holds a digital world that can lead her to great power. However unknown to her and the primordial darkness that told her of the book, the book of prophecies is a trap that guides everyone to follow it, so that the Master of Masters can defeat these primordial darknesses and holds no real power of its own. Whats inside the box however.... No one knows yet, but its theorized to probably be something related to the master of masters and/or a gateway for others to reach the World of Unmaking or whatever it'll be called where the MoM resides or a way for the MoM to return to the normal world.

you´re missing the very latest game (and soon also anime) version of Maleficent but as a late-teen senior high-school dark fairy boy called Malleus Draconius, who pretty much is a younger and more positive version of herself as a male, at the Japanese version of Disney Villains franchise Twisted Wonderland. His story-arc game for cell hasn´t been released yet. (It had been done the versions for Queen of Hearts, Scar, Ursula, Jafar, Snow White´s evil Queen and lately has started the Hades version of the 7 main-villain themed stories of that magical college - as Hogwarts inspired - where actually all the lead only-male teen versions of the villains aren´t actually so evil and just have several existential issues and the main-plot means to the villains actually getting a HAPPY ENDING for their own avoiding the darker fate of the original villains, although they still being quirky-mischevious twisted-darker antihero guys but not true villains over all.)

I'm honestly glad this was made. But, at the same time, I weirdly appreciate the Goons more than I do Maleficent. Then again, it's due to their nature as the regular hoods. The type that inspired characters like The Garthim in The Dark Crystal. I think it's why they're one of the two late stage Disney characters that appeared in Roger Rabbit, with them being partially obscured when Eddie Valiant is walking through Maroon Cartoons.

Something tells me Maleficent is a really cool villainess. She's always portrayed as having deep and thorough knowledge of human nature. Her wisdom and ability to adopt typical human qualities is remarkable! She's able to switch between her own and usual self as well as era to the modern ones. She just blends right in - into any situation: be it the most sophisticatedly evil of situations to the basic-most etiquette of parties! It's really cool how She portrays the style and badass of evil like no other one (even Hades pales in comparison. He's still elderly in his remarks - limited to the era of his comments)! She's really the best representation of evil - and the coolest one, too 😎😉!!

This was a pretty interesting video to watch. I didn’t realize this character was in so much. I was originally looking for the original 59 movie because Lego is apparently making a set of the scene where Prince Phillip fighting her dragon form. So, I wanted to at least see a recap of that film & I must say this video definitely satisfied that. It’s pretty well scripted & there’s a lot more appearances here than I expected. I will say though I still like the original 59 movie the best after all this time.

Even if the king had invited Maleficent, she would still curse Aurora. I don't think she cared at all for the party, wanting only to spread chaos. Aurora became her target because she saw the kingdom's party as the equivalent of they ignoring the evil she represents, and so, like a lion, she came to the party to remind the king and the people to never turn their back on her.

Here it is, the big one, one of the greatest villains every to have been created by Disney, Maleficent! While it can be argued that Chernabog might potentially be more powerful or more evil since he's supposed to be the Devil himself, Maleficent still trumps him in terms of her presence and actions in this movie. Like, there's just so much to say when it comes to Maleficent, she's basically the full package when it comes to the best qualities of a Disney villain. She's got that Faux Affably Evil personality, where here refined and dignified personality only enhances her evil and often sadistic actions, she's INCREDIBLY powerful, easily the most powerful among Disney Villains (again, with the possible exception of Chernabog), she's got a awesome design and is wonderfully animated, oddly beautiful and graceful for being essentially an "evil fairy" (basically the exact opposite of how she looked in the original Sleeping Beauty fairy tale), she's incredibly competent, with only her idiotic minions outside of Diablo holding her back, her performance in the original movie is basically perfect, Eleanor Audley was basically born for this role (I even kind of feel bad for her successors, having big shoes to fill and all), and lastly... that dragon form of hers is flipping awesome. I LOVE dragons... like, a lot. It's no wonder Disney kept using her in so many other productions, and is one of the main antagonists in the Kingdom Hearts series as well. The only negative thing I can think to say about her is that her main motivation in the movie is relatively minor and petty, though I suppose when your the mistress of evil, any slight against you must be taken as a serious offense... even if it's not being invited to a birthday party (though I suppose when basically everyone else was invited except for you, you WOULD feel a bit miffed about it as well). Another negative thing isn't so much about Maleficent herself but rather the plot surrounding her. She's just so powerful and competent that her lose comes off as basically a deus ex machina, with the good fairies basically making Prince Phillip's sword an instant-kill when he uses it on Maleficent. Heck, the good fairies do most of the heavy lifting against Maleficent, even though Phillip is supposed to be the hero. The villain and sidekicks really were way more interesting than the hero and actual "sleeping beauty" in this movie, which is rather unfortunate... I suppose I might as well weigh in on the live-action Maleficent movie, though maybe I shouldn't since I never saw it. I do know what happens in it, though, and while I don't think anyone was really asking for a more sympathetic portrayal of Maleficent, I think it was a rather bold move at the time of it's release, and before Disney went crazy with the live-action remakes no less. The Cruella movie definitely comes off as less interesting (and more ridiculous, given that the movie apparently gives an explanation for why Cruella hates Dalmatians specifically) for basically doing the whole "sympathetic reinterpretation of a classic Disney villain" thing Maleficent already did. I've heard mixed things about Maleficent in general, some saying it's actually good, some saying it's bad, some saying it's a mess but they still liked it if only because of certain plotpoints in the movie and Angelina Jolie being the only one to realize what kind of movie she was in and acting accordingly. Still, I wouldn't know for sure since I haven't seen the full thing, maybe I will one of these days, but I'll try to keep an open mind for when that happens.

I really wish we'd gotten a live-action "Sleeping Beauty" along the lines of 2015's "Cinderella," but I'd be fine with an antihero Maleficent if it hadn't ruined everyone else: Aurora is less cautious, the fairies and Phillip aren't very heroic, Stefan is evil, and Leah dies so Maleficent can fill her role.

Maleficent is such a great villian in Disney history, probably the best in my eyes. It hurts knowing that she's been ignored or insulted a bunch throughout her life for being an evil fairy and, well, doing evil and finding happiness in that. While that's all bad, see, if she was invited into more things like Aurora's birth (or whatever it was called) and people were more kinder to her, she'd possibly warm up and not be AS evil. Maybe... that's just a thought of mine lol, overall I think she's an amazing villian

A lot of Fae lore has that the Unseelie (Literally, not silly/fun) Fey are in a constant competition with the Seelie (Literally fun, amusing. basically good) Fae. By inviting 3 "Good Fairies" Aurora's parents would already be on the Unseelie's blacklist, and Maleficent would be honor bound to show up to rep the unpleasant fey. Then She was told she wasn't wanted, by one of the fairies, so Naturally she's going to have to ruin their Day. If an unseelie fey was invited, or if the 3 good fairies weren't invited, Maleficent MIGHT have not being so hostile. The next problem is that Maleficent is a Local Noble. In Medieval society, Hospitality and respect to your neighbors were important, especially to nobelity. As a regional power player, Maleficent would be entitled to an invitation to any event of significance. This is especially true if nobility from other visiting kingdoms were invited. So by slighting her, but inviting Hubert and his family, along with dozens to hundreds of other nobles, Maleficent was within her rights (as customs of the time) to be upset. Basically Aurora's parents screwed up or were screwed many times over. By Fey standards, they screwed up by not inviting a representative from Maleficent's court, and inviting her rivals meaning an unseelie Fey was going to crash the party. When she showed up, One of the good fairies said the quiet part out loud "You weren't wanted" and basically forced Maleficent's hand by Fairy Honor. Aurora was a victim of the Fey Cold War. By Human standards, they screwed up by not inviting her but inviting a bunch of other nobility and royalty. By excluding her from a essentially a diplomatic goodwill summit, she was right to be suspicious and needed to make her power clear. If Stephen had kept the christening a small family affair, Maleficent wouldn't have any reason to care. Of course seeing as how Stephen was a king and the Christening was for his firstborn and only heir, he was basically obligated by custom to make a deal out of it. Maleficent is Evil. She's dangerous. And she intentionally chose a path to cause as much emotional trauma as possible in her retribution. But she was denied an invitation that she was entitled to. At the very least, inviting other kings, and the "good fairies" was a mistake if they were aware there was an Unseelie Fey who also could be considered a regional feudal lord.
