Malice Mizer was the band that brought Gothic Lolita fashion into Visual Kei. They operated in three phases, each phase had a different singer. A lot of the music with Gackt [the singer here, second phase] mixed Rock and classic types of music. So they have a lot of songs that will remind you far less of Luna Sea ^^ Their concerts must have taken HOURS during this Tour [it's from 1998] because they changed clothes and make-up every few songs [so yeah, this is were they were going after this song] It's really more of a performance then a concert - which is also mirrored by the recording. Their latest album Bara no Seido was made into a film and the album was recorded with programmed drums only because Kami died at the age of 27 in 1999 and featured choirs instead of a single vocalist - however, they later toured the album with Klaha [who is a trained Opera Singer] as their third vocalist.The DVD that came with this tour is so atmospheric and cool. I would highly recommend that live to everyone who is into Gothic/industrial/darkwave music or who is simply into theatre :) If, by any chance, you haven't heard Dir en grey's The World of Mercy yet I would so love to watch your reaction and hear your commentary on this song, Frank. Frank you asked: I hope they are all alive? Unfortunately not, the Drummer Kami died in 1999 due to a Brain Aneurism.. Gackt ( the Vocalist) still visits his Grave and Kami's Parents each Year (this was shown in a Documentary)

Malice Mizer is such a tragic what if of music. This period with Gackt was their peak, but it only lasted a few years. Gackt went on to be a megastar soloist, but you really wonder how much further Malice Mizer could have gone had Gackt stayed and Kami not tragically passed away. I think if Kami was still around they would have at least had a reunion by now. Gackt and the 2 guitar players just had a major falling out that ended the relationship. I dont think to this day they've ever really made up over it. Kami was the closes member to Gackt, and if he was still around I think he could have been the bridge for that reunion. Fans have wanted for over 20 years.

6:58 Unfortunately no :( As someone said, Kami (drummer in the butterfly costume) died from a Brain aneurysm. The baterist GAZ (which isn't here, he left the band in the first years of malice mizer) according to Mana (one of the guitarist, the one in blue) he also died from an unknown disease around 2017?? i think it was from smoking. And the 3rd vocalist, which is Klaha, we know nothing about him. He might be living a normal life as a salaryman with another name, there's rumors he got throat cancer or that hes dead, we dont know unfortunately. But all the other members are alive and in other bands! Gackt is in a solo career

Gackt!!! My Favorite Singer of all Times.. This is his very early Phase, in 1999 he started his Solo Career and further developped his Voice and massive Live Shows. He is a Chameleon with an incredible Voice. Dude also got a Black Belt in Teakwondo.. I will give you a Link to his Solo Work to check out.. He is basically the No.1 Rockstar Mega Celebrity of Japan. The makers of Final Fantasy are fans of him. Always a rumor apart from Genesis that certain other character designs are based on Gackt. Also Gackts trip into hollywood with Bunraku the movie. Cool movie. Certainly not appreciated. Good movie

fun fact: the singer - Gackt - made two songs for the FFVII soundtrack (Redemption and Longing) and was also the voice actor for Genesis Rhapsodos (he was also the model for the character and played him in the live-action)

Malice Mizer was one of the 1st Japanese bands I ever listened to. Started listening to them way back in high school and at the time jrock/visual kei was not very popular at all where I'm from so besides be and maybe about 8 others listened to their music. I can't tell you how many times I've watched music videos, concerts, interviews, getting interested in spin offs such as moi dix mois, gackt, kozi, klaha. I'd say about a year or so after I graduated, the music was starting to get more popular around here. It's obviously been years since I've dedicated a lot of time watching videos, but I still listen to the music. Right now it mainly consists of dir en grey, malice mizer, moi dix mois.

90s vkei pretty much all take influence from the 80s metal/vkei band Dead End. Theyre pretty much the prototype band that influenced the sound of 90s vkei, from luna sea to L'Arc~en~Ciel

Hey Frank me again, first I loved the reaction, and I want to say that you are absolutely correct to compare it to the final fantasy characters, after all the design of many were inspired by this band, Sephiroth (villain from VII) was inspired by the music video " Bel Air" and Squall Leonhart (protagonist of the VIII) was inspired by the other look used by the vecalist in that same show in the song "au revoir".

Kamijo (Versailles vocalist) wasn't one of MM vocalists, he sang with Malice Mizer as a guest only during the last anniversary concert since he was a roadie and friend of the band, before starting his singing career. But +1 for Versailles reaction request.

Thank you for this reaction! I grew up on this band and I truly enjoyed your reaction. Visual Kei shows back in the 80's and 90's were very much about being theatrical and over the top. Malice Mizer was no exception. There have been three different male vocalists during Malice Mizer's active time. The Gackt era was by far the best and probably the most popular, in my opinion. To answer a few of your questions: Luna Sea debuted in 1986; about 6 years before Malice Mizer's debut. If anything, I would say that Sugizo's style may have influenced the guitar work in Le Ciel. It wouldn't be too surprising considering Gackt (Malice Mizer's lead vocalist) and Sugizo are friends. You did react to the final performance of the concert which has the dramatic stage exit. I recommend checking out the whole concert. The whole Merveilles album is absolutely brilliant! Unfortunately, as someone did comment earlier, Malice Mizer's drummer, Kami, did pass away in his sleep due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage in 1999. He was only 27 years old. He did compose some music which was released posthumously on Malice Mizer's album, Shinwa. The surviving members of Malice Mizer are alive and well, each working on their own projects now. Gackt is a hugely successful solo artist. Guitarist, Mana, created the band Moi dix Mois in addition to becoming a successful music producer and fashion designer. Guitarist, Közi, is also a solo artist who plays with a number of other bands. Bassist, Yu~ki, pretty much left the music scene although he has made a few appearances with Moi dix Mois and composing for Kozi. In 2011, he launched a jewelry line, Mother of Life, which is sold through the online store for Midi:Nette, Mana's record label.

Most of the bands you mentioned are (were kinda) contemporary, in a way or another you can find some similarities. There's are so many bands and artists that you can listen to.. That I can't even put in order my thoughts and recommend just one.. But.. I think maybe you'll like a solo artist.. KAYA Rose, especially Traumerei or Memento Mori. Later Gackt made many interesting images in his iwn concerts, also with black wings and dreads in his hair, there were many interesting photos (concert Last moon, song Arrow), also he looked as nice alien, he made theater plays also. Every time in internet search of a new question about him I always find many-many new pictures of him (which I never saw before) and new (for me) pists about him and his movies. He is a very good actor, especially good he played roles of clever men and maniacs and perverts, and also great warriors (brave and beautiful).

@@ancel6811 yep glad someone knows the history. Kami’s death had to do with a brain condition of someone, it’s always something with the brain with drummers for the reasons they die. Shiroi is a good example of the mourning as it was like a funeral.

Other his response to the hard society is breaking their rules)) Gackt always changed color of his hair (in schools and corporations all must have black hair with the same haircuts and the same clothes), he eats even ramen very politely on european manner without any sounds (other japanese mostly make sounds when eat), also he disagree with japanese manner loving small heads (he was laughing and said, when he saw such little heads of two models, he was thinking if there are brains or not? Hahaha). He is multicultural, man of the world, he finds best what human beings made and achieved, because he used to think a lot and thinking and knowing new is interesting for him, he doesn't like prejudice and chauvinism, he is fair person. And thank you for the video I haven't seen yet.

God, I had forgotten about Malice Mizer! The last time I thought about them I think was about ten years ago, when I saw Moon Child, a movie with Gackt (the black-winged singer here). Malice Mizer should be pronounced like in French; that's their style; their songs are also often titled in French. As I remember, Gackt went on to his solo career and I think the band is on hiatus, but they certainly made the history of music in Japan. Oh, in Visual Kei, the "Kei" is a Japanese word, it should be pronounced more or less how you would read it in Italian: the "i" is mostly a graphic sign to show that the sound is long. Like a long "e" in Italian.

they are not really "copying" luna sea, that guitar sound was caracteristic from late 80s and 90s japanese rock bands, it was a way to produce an etheral sound but a lot of bands use it. Luna Sea is almost a decade older than Malice Mizer but they weren´t the first band having that kind of sound, another band that use it with really good results was L´arc N Ciel on their early albums from 90s. truth to be told Malice Mizer was a really Eclectic band.. heavilly inluenced by some european sounds with some arrengements copying baroque musican also french music from the past decades, but their sound was really diverse from one song to another even inside their so called eras(basically delimited by the change of singer).
