Just an FYI about abusive relationships, if Derek was physically abusing Madison and keeping her away from her friends and family, there's nothing to say that he wouldn't have vetoed her using any form of birth control, including the pill or condoms, as another form of the power he held over her--so not really a nit pick, more a sad reality :(

They did actually explain it but it was like a passing by blink and you will miss it kind of thing. They said that his abilities are mental and telekinetic in a sense. Gabriel can't speak on his own, so he manipulates things to speak through, like cellphones, radios and tv's using telepathy like broadcasting his mind to it or something. In the first scenes we see that the doctors got afraid that he was manifesting his voice through electronics and they made like a remark that he's "getting stronger" meaning he wasn't always able to do that and later I forget what scene it was, they mentioned the telepathy type of ability but not directly. I guess they didn't really want to focus on that. I was looking out of that bit too while watching it in theatre like ok if this is all in her mind, how do we explain the actual electronic stuff and then boom I heard it.

As someone that escaped an abusive relationship I can slide in my anecdotal rebuttal to the whole “why would you keep sleeping with him?!” thing. When you’re with someone that is abusive, there’s no bodily autonomy or freedom to say no. In fact it’s usually safer for you to let it happen. I didn’t have my own money and he maxed my only credit card ruining my credit or hope of getting a second one. Just saying.

For me intentional camp does not excuse a mess of a story with several plot holes. I love camp and horror is my favorite genre. To many things left unanswered and actually made no sense. Why was Gabriel able to control electronics? How did he Gabriel turn invisible in the beginning when he made the couch cushion move? Why was some of the acting terrible and some really good? Why did Gabriel become a parkour expert at the end? I get the extra strength angle but to many crazy things that could used a bit more explaining to make this work for me. I’m not trying to take anything away from anyone that loved it just like to explain the reasons it didn’t work for me as a horror lover.

I like how people are being snobby regarding this movie's plot, but will praise overindulgent, routine, and manipulative tripe like A Quiet Place and Hereditary. @@Erowid13 Absolutely and it’s funny that people who don’t see the the appeal of movies like Hereditary and The Witch, which I agree are not films for everyone but excuse nonsensical plots in films that try throw terms and titles like camp and think that excuses a film making sense. I don’t need to be spoon feed expositions or hand held but at least make a movie make since and flow properly. Movies like Sleep Away Camp, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, The Toxic Avenger, those are true camp horror films done right. I love horror and I’m very forgiving of the genre and very defensive because it gets a bad rep a lot of the time but this film was predictable. This film tried way to hard and did not hit the mark. It had acting that was per James Wan intentionally bad and acting that took itself way to serious. Is it camp or not? It missed fell flat and I’m okay admitting that I did not enjoy it. The average moviegoer is NOT watching director interviews so doesn't matter what Wan said in an interview that only his personal fans or cinephiles watch. They got our cash so they didn't lose there and they'll follow along the reaction to see what they do next. I hated the story thought the twist was stupid and predictable. From a ctitics pov i can see many of the perceived flaws, but from a casual viewers pov this was obviously just made for fun and i had a blast watching it. Also i can see if you went to this expecting something like the conjuring or his other work you may be disappointed with the way it turns out. But overall i think he delivered a solid experience( although not a solely horror one).

"Secret Window" worked because it started off as Man vs Supernatural, then went Man vs. Man, then ended up being Man vs. Himself, but they did it correctly. This movie is trash in comparison as they made it VERY CLEAR it was Man vs Supernatural with the electricity and all and then ended up being complete bs Man vs Himself. This movie is terrible.

It’s like that Edward Mordrake urban legend but more supernatural. I kind of like it. And setting it up to be so over the top could make for more over the top installments as well, which I wouldn’t mind. More scenes of body horror and Gabriel being well… whatever it is Gabriel is. I could see how it could be off putting to some though.

i didn’t even wanna go see this movie in the first place because i thought it was going to be another retelling of similar supernatural stories- in fact i was kinda annoyed at the constant barrage of advertisements i kept getting for it. i like the change in direction, however. and honestly i kinda began to like gabriel as a slasher- his movements , his costume, his face, and origin are all fairly unique. i’m always scared of horror characters moving in unnatural ways, contorting their bodies or like in annihilation the bear who mimics it’s human victims screams and cries of pain and agony. seeing these qualities and features in this character are pretty cool.

All I can say based on your intro is this, if you had the opportunity to direct your own film, would you? You seem to have an understanding of what people want to see and what is actually good. In my opinion, I think that you'd do a fantastic job at it. Hollywood needs to start looking a content creators if they want to produce things that people actually want to watch. Keep up the phenomenal work, and I hope that I can see a movie directed by one of my favorite content creators.

That's not how things work. Directing is mostly camera angles and telling people what to do, which I don't think he has professional knowledge on and wouldn't do very good. Only big name directors get to have creative freedom when it comes to the script, most of the time the writers will veto a directors change and just move on. 99% of the movies you watch nowadays have very little influence from the director. Freelance script writing is a thing, and provides the most creativity put into a movie. Producers and executives basically control everything about a movie now, expect for big names like James Won.

A little late but from a medical standpoint maybe Gabriel can do all of this cool parkour stuff so well, and move so well, on top of being so strong is because he sees everything Maddy sees, so he doesn't have to worry about tripping over anything, and as far as the speed and strength, for most of the movie he had a lot of control over her brain, so maybe he was manipulating the part of her brain that controlled fight or flight, so she was in a constant adrenal dump the entire time Gabriel was in control, giving her/him great strength, agility and speed.

I work with battered women/men, primarily young ones, and I'll admit a lot of this is accurate however the lack of explanation really takes away from that especially if someone isn't use to seeing it. I've worked with young adults who have been beaten bloody by their partner but they don't go to the hospital out of fear, love, insecurities, a mistrust of the system, shame and so on. Some women have partners that refuse to allow them to go on birth control even though they don't want kids, which seems like it doesn't make sense but it's really just a matter of controlling their partners. Some men will even beat their pregnant girlfriend or wife with the specific purpose of causing a miscarriage and to mentally break their partner. All of these this could have been added to the film to fill the holes in the beginning. You have a nosey neighbor who could have laid the ground work for somethings then there’s the conversation with her sister plus you already showed that he attacked her while she was pregnant and she tried to stay away from him before he even pushed her head against the wall. It’s all there they just didn't execute it well.

The only thing I had a problem with was that the movie tried to make parasitic twins and teratoma synonymous, which they’re not. A parasitic twin also called “fetus in fetu” is when one twin consumes the other and now the consumed twin feeds of the dominant one. Sometimes you have to “give birth” to your twin so they can stop feeding off of you. A teratoma, however, is a tumor that can sometimes be mislabeled as parasitic twin since it almost looks human. It can grow hair, teeth, nails, etc. but if I remember correctly it can’t grow internal organs like a brain, or a heart. I know all this because a few years ago I randomly got obsessed with doppelgängers, then twins, then parasitic twins, which is how I found out about teratomas. Since they share a brain, and Gabriel is able to feed off the fetuses and energy, I would say that he is a parasitic twin (like Basket Case that a lot of people have already mentioned) rather than a teratoma.
@Araneus21

in a relationship like the one she was in where derek was immediately apologetic and offered ‘remedies’, i’m sure it would be easy for him to manipulate her and find a way to ‘make it up to her’. i’m sure he’d complain about condoms, and find a reason to get angry at her for taking birth control. we know that he was keeping maddy away from her family as well, which would make it easy for her to feel like she had nowhere else to go. there’s also the very real possibility that she didn’t consent to having sex or a baby. but regardless, i just don’t think this is something to nitpick

I will stand up for the main character for one thing you considered a plot hole (around the 9 minute mark): when someone is in an abusive relationship they may feel pressured into having an intimate relationship with them. They might get beaten if they try to say no. Their partner might be so controlling as to not allow them to use contraceptives. This is why I have no trouble believing she’d want to leave him yet gets pregnant.

First, I love your videos! Second, you make a point of asking why she's still sleeping with her abusive husband and getting pregnant but most often in cases of abuse, the sex was probably not consensual. The odds of her being forced is highly likely and if he had control over her seeing family, he also probably had control over contraception. It's not a huge leap from abusive husband to these conclusions.

For the her sleeping with him bit. He could have been coercing her into sex or flat out assaulting her. It happens a lot in domestic abuse situations, and even in other relationships. Unfortunately, it's a lot more common than people think. That could be why she was pregnant so many times in one year, and if he was as abusive as shown in the movie, I doubt she would have been able to get birth control, let alone successfully take it without him noticing.
