COPYRIGHT NOTICE: the footage of the press conference about the discovery of the body of George Mallory on Mount Everest in 1999, which Thom Pollard is commenting on in this video, is owned by the Associated Press. Here is the link to the original material being reviewed in this video: • NEPAL: DOUBT OVER MALL...
I have reached out to the Associated Press on multiple occasions for permission to use this material. Having heard nothing back I posted this video with full disclosure that I am not the owner of said video and in no way would anyone watching this video come to the conclusion that this is a replacement for it.
The video you are about to watch is in no way attempting to be a market substitute for the original material. No one would watch one thinking it's the other. Given that this video is essentially critical commentary of the press conference that is owned, as stated, by Associated Press, no one would ever watch this video and come to the conclusion that it is a market substitute for the original material of that press conference.
On another note, I reached out directly to the Associated Press on multiple occasions asking for permission to use this footage in the exact manner that I've done here. I have not heard anything back, and came to the conclusion that no one was interested in claiming ownership of the material. I of course still gave credit to the owner and kept the 'AP' logo up on the screen at all times.
Respectfully,
Thom Pollard

Love your videos. I was only exposed to George Mallory in 2009 after the Jeffery Archer Book, Paths to Glory. I have been searching for information on the expeditions and the finding of his body since then. Thanks to KZbin, there is so much information with so many opinions. I still am on the fence on "Did they or didn't they?" I will be going over all your videos get some wonder information on Mount Everest and the George Mallory expedition(s).... Thank you

@@scottinnh88I imagine that the amount of people who are both achaeologists or similar trained professions, as well as trained mountaineers who are willing to go to this height is low. While there are many inexperienced climbers going up the mountain now, they clearly wanted experienced people for this project insofar as they were able.

I find it unfortunate that other influences on KZbin like Michael Tracey think your lying about summit rocks and all the rest. Lots of people including the author of Into The Silence have tarnished the 1999 expedition and make it out to be this unprepared and unprofessional team of mountaineers just chasing individual glory. Your a good man Thom and one day George Mallory will thank you in heaven for bringing honor back to his name.

Thank you my friend. When I quit my job to take part in this expedition I thought aloud on at least 100 occasions that there was no way in hell we'd ever find Mallory or Irvine. I honestly don't think anyone was prepared, although the film producers had been in close contact with the family about how the bodies should be handled, with Kodak about the camera and film, things of that nature. Truly, we were a bunch of mountaineers with little (if any) training for such matters. All that said, given the time that we were up there, the information we had, we did as well as anyone. One of the team members said once in reply to a famous British mountaineer absolutely railing on us something to the nature of 'why didn't you go find him yourself and do it better, then?' Fact is, just finding him was miraculous, but we had Jochen Hemmleb's insane research to help us hone in. In my heart @augie snyder I know absolutely full well that GLM and SI will welcome me into their arms when that time comes. Thank you for your words. Cheers!

I think the problem isn’t Michael Tracy, it’s the fact the 1999 team wasn’t prepared, they certainly didn’t document their findings well. Plus the refusal to release video is pretty odd.

@WWIIPacificHistory Same. Some of the critiques seem valid and at other times he just appears snooty and appears to think there's a conspiracy to "hide the truth for book deals" which doesn't make sense to me. Also I took issue with the phrase "failed to search the pockets for summit rocks". How on God's green earth to you miss a rock in a pocket if you look in there. That's not a thing.😂

THANK YOU, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate your kind comments. Hillary didn't react to this press conference, but when first told of the news of the discovery he congratulated the team via a BBC interview. Shortly after, when the world turned and began exclaiming that the team were all a bunch of Barbarians hacking away at the body he didn't have much more to say on the topic. I met him in 2004 and I do believe he knew I had filmed the expedition...during our short interview I never got around to asking him about Mallory's discovery....

Hi Tom - been watching your channel for a few weeks now and like your dialogue and civility. I watched the comprehensive video that had video coverage from the mountain and personal interviews from the expedition members. It was very compelling but one thing stood out for me among all other aspects was that while gathering the group around Mallory’s body there was a serious discussion I regards to disturbing the body. I would’ve thought the expedition party would’ve thought this out in great detail and had a established plan in the event of finding either Irvine or Mallory. Did anyone contact their family members to convey their wishes? I would be very interested in your take this aspect and what you feel you could’ve done differently in retrospect if anything? You all are high altitude mountaineers an I’m guessing could’ve surmised the fact you would need to peel an exposed body (that’s been up there this long) away from the mountain to gather forensic information as to the details of Mallory or Irvines death. Which is why I was surprised that the appearance was this was not discussed in advance. I am I no way being critical but am curios as to what the thinking was beforehand.
@EverestMystery
@EverestMystery 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Morri, thank you! Yes, both families were contacted in advance of the 1999 expedition. Their wishes were adhered to as far as possible, including reading Psalm 103 from the Bible after covering GLM with rocks, as the family asked for us to specifically do. The shock of actually finding GLM's remains was overwhelming, I dare say, to all of us. The most thought-out plans and countless discussions with the team can't really prepare one for the emotional impact of suddenly encountering one of the greatest mountaineers of his generation. I believe that to a man - at least I can say this for myself - the feeling was that while although we had permission to do this, it was one thing to think about at sea level and altogether another thing when it is actually happening, at 27,000 feet in the windswept face of Mount Everest, no less, in the presence of a great man who had been lost for 75 years, the icon of his generation. I'm not sure if that answered the question, but I truly hope it helps. Thank you for your interest!

Hi Ed, great question....I do know that there were some journalists there filming the entire press conference. I could probably track it down if I did some detective work....there was a journalist from Nepal whom I've had contact with recently (regarding my garbage on Everest video), as well as a couple American journalists...and this AP footage probably originally had the event in full. I believe the presser lasted possibly 15-20 minutes, then concluded with questions, then a period of time where people mingled and took pictures and footage of the artifacts. All in all we were probably in there for an hour. It really would be great to see the entire press conference! Thanks for watching!

Amazing. Seeing the artifacts lends a sense of reality to Mallory that transcends the “story.” I’m curious - when you saw the face, were you able to recognize and identify the body as Mallory? Also, do you still have the watch? (For what it’s worth, I have no particular sensitivities about the remains or the artifacts. My best guess is that Mallory would appreciate being remembered and honored for his achievement.)

I really enjoy your open-minded discussions. 3. I have always thought that the position he was found in was very powerful, as if he were still clawing his way up the mountain these past 75 years. A symbol of his resolve and strength. 4. I was not aware that the team had done a thorough search of his pockets, etc. until now. I thought that maybe conditions and/or reticence might have been factors, hence the "any rocks" question. It must be frustrating for the discovery team to hear critics who are ignoring the facts.

I always suspected that the search team would have collected the infamous summit rocks from Mallory's pockets, if they had found any. Even so I am glad to hear Thom Pollard directly address the summit rocks issue.

If a rock was accidentally dropped from a pocket and tumbled downhill, that I don't know. However, everything in his pockets came down to Base Camp. I can't imagine a rock getting lost when a tiny pencil made it. That said, I would need to query every individual from the five who were there on 1 May. And regarding Irvine, you have mentioned your feeling that he was stuck there, his soul, on the mountain, and that you felt you had or could help free it. Can you develop that? Finding his body and making a grave for it, you feel, is what is needed? Thanks and regards from south India.

@@EverestMystery Hi Thom, I too found the lack of frost bite really intersting as well. My gut feeling has been that they turned back during the blizzard. It may not have been the super storm some suggested but Odell recalled he could only see a few yards so it was obviously thick, similar to the 1933 storm that Longland and his porters fought through. Mallory being aware of the coming monsoon I think he turned around after initially giving it a go and they had their accident on the way down in poor visability and snow.

Hello. Thank you for this video. I wanted to know if you all felt overwhelmed with emotion when finding GLM? I know you were all excited to find an icon, almost a mythological figure - with GLM missing for so long and being entrenched in mountain climbing lore within the community - did you feel sadness? I ask this because I began to cry when the team read Psalm 103. If I'm not mistaken, I could hear what I felt like sobbing in the background as it was read aloud. Were your reactions in that moment similar to mine? Were members of the expedition sobbing at all in that moment? I just felt so much emotion watching it happen on KZbin years later. I can only imagine what you felt and the team? Thanks in advance.

I was indeed shedding tears, and I believe that is me you are hearing in the film. It was overwhelming to be there, one of the pivotal experiences of my life. I was in awe not of the icon in front of me, but of the loss of a living and breathing human being who left behind three young children, a wife, friends, family, a home....decades of life that would never be lived. I struggled to keep myself together in that moment when Andy read Psalm 103. All I have to do is close my eyes and I'm immediately transported there....that feeling has never left me. I think of it every single day, many times a day....that has happened for 23 years now. Thank you for your thoughts and for taking the time to watch.

Hi, late to the party, but your replay of the AP footage can definitely come under educational "fair use". Of course, there will always be someone or entity that might dispute it but to what end? The case wouldn't get too far in copyright court. Glad you played it! I enjoy your videos and am interested in the M and S debate. Also, I was smiling at the the comments you get about the summit rocks--looking for possible summit rocks in a "sea" of rocks in which M is embedded. Combine that with the shock of encountering the body it seems that the rocks were low on the priority list though I realize, too, that "armchair" sleuths would not be happy about it Thank you for your efforts to draw together a community of interested people in this topic!

I took the copyright claim to KZbin and lost. Go figure. The owner of the footage (AP), if anything, benefitted from me using the materials. The never-ending worldwide interest in Mallory and Irvine is totally understandable. The discovery of Mallory's body makes it even more fascinating as we all hope for the discovery of Irvine. It's created a very profitable mini-industry of TV shows and books and KZbin channels all devoted to speculating on "If they find the camera, it could prove they made the summit". However despite all I've read, I will defer to one of the world's greatest experts on the subject ---- Reinhold Messner. In his book "The Second Death Of George Mallory" Messier analyzes what happened and comes to conclusion that there was NO WAY they could have got over the Second Step, summited, taken photos, and then made the descent. That's fiction which ignores the historical reality. Messier gives the reasons as an experienced mountaineer, not as an amateur speculator. They were turned back in deteriorating weather in temperatures around -30 to -40 with further wind chill, freezing in totally inferior clothing, with virtually no food or water, probably unable to see the route back down, their oxygen probably failing or useless, and essentially doomed. Then one of them slipped, and they both fell to their deaths.
@markpurdy9860
@markpurdy9860 2 жыл бұрын
They never attempted the second step rather traversed the step by the zig zag route. Mallory took the advice of Norton and went around the second step. Odell observed them at the base of the pyramid at 12:50 and said they were climbing quickly. I believe they summited and fell on the way down.

Hi Thom. Try this for converting metric to imperial units. Converting metres to yards simply add 10% (i.e. 500M becomes 550 yards), then of course multiply by 3 to get feet. It's accurate to about 0.5%

Fascinating. I have a somewhat vague memory of Mallory's discovery, but I do remember that I also had a semi-instinctual feeling that his discovery would somehow solve the mystery of whether he and Irvine summitted. That instinctual impression was inaccurate, as we know. Did you take photographs during your search or is that somehow inappropriate? I could go either way on that question. If it wasn't Mallory, I would think no photos is the more respectful approach. But in this circumstance, with the entire globe wanting to know whether he and/or Irvine summited, and although I might be wrong, I get the impression that Mallory himself would probably want objective facts to be known. Thus, it might have been acceptable to take photos in the interest of preserving the history of Mallory's discovery. I don't know. Just one person's opinion. I'm not a super religious person. If I was in Mr. Pollard's shoes, I would have taken photos and I would share them. But I am not in his shoes. I also note, this video is a first hand, personal account, of a search of George Mallory's effects. That search and Mr. Pollard's description thereof, is not second hand, and thus, deserves significant weight. To some extent, it preserves the record of what happened from Mr. Pollard's perspective. Cool video.

Hi Thom, I'd be really interested in purchasing and reading your book should it get published. There's a big feeling of unfinished business regarding this mystery. I gather that if one could prove conclusively that Mallory and Irvine did not reach the summit then we would feel at peace with this. This niggling possibility that they achieved the near impossible drives the collective human spirit. It's like an adrenaline rush. I can only imagine what it would be like, what the collective reaction would be if there was photographic evidence of their success? You mention Graham Hoyland, and having read his book "Last Hours on Everest", he reaches the conclusion that it would have been too much for Mallory and Irvine to have reached the summit, but originally in the BBC documentary, Hoyland expresses his reasons why he believed Mallory and Irvine had summitted. It's understandable that people change their mind, but clearly Graham Hoyland changed his opinion quickly. I believe that when people change their opinions quickly that it is a sign of being unsettled, and even though it's understandable, there is something unsettling about this mystery. Eric Simonson seems like someone who has a firm and conclusive temperament. Once he reaches a decision, it's final. From what I've read in "The Third Pole", that Simonson felt obliged or even under pressure to make the photos of Mallory go viral because it had become public knowledge so quickly, but in retrospect it seemed to have been a bad decision. I do recall in "The Wildest Dream" where Conrad Anker said that when he noticed a very old body in the snow that for a moment there he felt like keeping it to himself. It just shows how in our day and age the line between things being kept secret and things going viral is very thin indeed. It's also unusual that the New York Times article about the discovery of Mallory was written by Christopher S. Wren. Straight away it's makes me think about the great seventeenth century English polymath, architect and astronomer, Sir Christopher Wren. It's interesting to note that the discovery of Mallory may have influenced the James Bond franchise, by creating the character of "Gareth Mallory" or "M", played by Ralph Fiennes. Certainly, it's a curiosity. I wonder what your thoughts are on that? Being a cameraman on Mount Everest although a privilege, must be a tough task. I also wonder how you felt pulled not only by the discovery of Mallory, but also by the pull of the summit? You must have been itching to kill two birds with one stone? I believe Conrad Anker reached the summit a decade later while filming "The Wildest Dream" and climbing the Second Step free hand?
@EverestMystery
@EverestMystery 2 жыл бұрын
Dear Lee, thank you for the truly awesome comment....your observations are razor sharp. It wasn't lost on me that the NY Times article was written by Christoper Wren! I did a double take the first time I saw it. Fitting, indeed. You bring up a good point on all accounts. I'll focus now on the idea of changing one's mind. Personally, after having been at the site of GLM's remains, I never got the feeling that he made it. I recorded sound for many of the interviews in Base Camp (or was there to assist the director of photography) and listened as some of the climbers said how they believed M&I made it. It didn't sit right with me. Now, be assured, I want to be convinced otherwise. I would jump for joy to learn that they made it. I suppose half of this effort in peeling back the layers is ignited by the fact that I want to be wrong about thinking they didn't make it. However, as I alluded to in this very video, my heart in this story is with Sandy Irvine, who got caught up in something bigger than himself. I channeled his spirit for the year leading up to the 2019 expedition, and honestly felt like I knew him. We conversed during my long training runs/hikes up Mount Washington in New Hampshire. So, in Graham changing his mind quickly...perhaps you're correct about your observations. I truly should contact Graham for a conversation. He is a sensitive and intelligent man, whom I wish I could have had more conversations during the 1999 expedition. I'll jump to the Bond films with Gareth Mallory. For sure, I think GLM is in the collective consciousness of the world now. Whether purposely or purely by chance, I don't think it's a mistake that someone like M is on the big screen. But, I'm a romantic, so....you never know! I look forward to continuing this conversation. Thank you Lee!
@leeseaman6068
@leeseaman6068 2 жыл бұрын
Dear Thom, I feel truly privileged to be having this conversation with you. First of all, regarding the character of "Gareth Mallory" in the James Bond franchise I couldn't agree more that this is definitely a sign as you allude to that "GLM is in the collective consciousness of the world now." I think it's wonderful that you feel you've been having a spiritual form of conversation going on with Sandy Irvine in the area where you live. I'm gathering that New Hampshire is a lovely part of the world, and is related to or twinned with the county of Hampshire in the UK? Coming from England myself, I've been to the US a couple of times: Chicago and Breckenridge, Colorado for skiing. Both remarkable experiences. However, I digress. To have this spiritual connection with Sandy is remarkable. He maybe like a soulmate who's giving you steady "heavenly downloads" from beyond our limited matrix. I have read "Fearless on Everest" by his great niece, Julie Summers - a very articulate, and well-spoken lady who provides a romantic and detailed insight into the short life of her great uncle. Sandy clearly achieved so much in his short life, but at 22 it ended so soon, and maybe in part why one may feel emotionally connected with his plight. One may think it could have been a chance encounter when a young Sandy bumped into Noel Odell and his wife in the hills of North Wales before being taken on the Spitzbergen expedition, as well as a trip to Switzerland before heading for Everest. You may be interested to know that I have worked at a language school in Fulham, which is just across the river from Putney, where there's a picture of Sandy back in the early 1920's getting ready for canoeing training or the Oxford Cambridge boat race itself with his team members. I believe Noel Odell and Sandy had met up in Putney too. Funnily enough, Gregory Peck back in 1975 was involved in a scene on the Fulham side of the river in Bishops Park while filming "The Omen", which is pretty much opposite from where Sandy's photo was taken outside the boat house! The fact you point out that Sandy "got caught up in something bigger than himself" only adds to the romanticism of the entire story. It increases his mystique. He was a young, adventurous, intrepid and extremely talented young man. However, as Julie Summers described Sandy in "The Wildest Dream" that he was someone who would grab life by the horns or the bull by the horns, if an opportunity presented itself really highlights his personality and character. How did Sandy manage to get so high on Everest with the very limited mountaineering experience he had? It seems also that as an engineer he was so ahead of his time when trying to create a worthwhile oxygen apparatus, when the reputable company who designed them failed to consider his insight and advice. It's interesting when you say you've had communication with Sandy Irvine because you may know about the British Shakesperian actor, Brian Blessed who like Mallory I believe attempted to climb Everest three times. Apparently, Brian Blessed had contact with GLM in a dream where George rebuked Brian for his foolishness for trying so hard, on something along those lines!

Hello, Thom; I am interested in the search area. What went into where and how the search was preformed. How did they get to Mallory? Was it by dumb luck or did they have an educated idea of where to start. Was there any pre-planning of What will be done, if the expedition actually did find one of them? Let alone detailed plans. Also, you spoke of keeping it secret, then finding out that the secret wasn't a secret. Can you talk to the what and why of that? Why was keeping the find a secret even a thing? I get not telling where the body is located. Did everyone agree to not talk at first? Was there any real expectation of finding anything? When there was a find, did everyone rush to get the first 'Scoop'. Sound like it all fell apart around that time. Lastly A video on just how the expedition fell apart from what sounds like over night. Sounds like nobody actually expected to find either one of the men, let alone what to do if they did. Am I wrong? Thanks!

Many thanks for watching....I'll try to answer a couple questions, and perhaps save your comment for my 'comments' video coming out soon. Before the expedition Jochen Hemmleb had done considerable research of a proposed search area that took into consideration all of the clues that we knew, such as the location of the ice axe discovered in 1933, the location of the 1924 02 bottle that Eric Simonson saw in 1991, the discovery of Wang Hongbao near Camp VI of an 'old English dead', and so on. While Conrad found the body outside of the zone we were searching in, the location of GLM was just underneath it, at a slightly lower altitude. We had extensive conversations about what would happen if a body was discovered, and had detailed instructions from the families about how they would like that to go (ie, read Psalm 103, etc). The secret lasted about 10 minutes, once the Mountainzone website released a photo seen 'round the world of GLM's back, which would ultimately be seen in Newsweek Magazine, etc....released by a team member. It was all good, but took the majority of the team by surprise. I certainly didn't expect to find anyone....but had seen a few bodies on previous expeditions, and had an idea of how I'd handle it. Cheers and thank you for the thoughtful questions!

I'm new to your channel and the relative renewed interest in this story. I just read Synott's recent "Third Pole" book and it was great! I'm in a weird spot though because this being youtube, as soon as you watch a video for this topic, a whole slew of other vids show up in the "recommendations" section. As you might guess, a collection of vids from Michael Tracy show up and dude seems pretty convinced that the '99 expedition was sloppy, poorly documented, mishandled, chock full of knuckleheads and a facade for book deals and further embedding in the Chinese Communist Party. Obviously, I'm exaggerating, but I'm the pure unqualified laymen just trying to sort it all out. From my vantage, you seem to avoid mentioning the viewpoints of this guy and his ilk and him and people like him seem to relish taking bush-league potshots sequestered in their own channels. Is there a universe where we can actually put this platform to good use, get some folks on a zoom call, setup a roundtable for civil discussion/debate/idea-exchange? For what it's worth, I like your basic conclusion that "I think Mallory/Irvine *blank* but we just don't really know" (where *blank* can take on whatever gut feel you like)

Russ, thank you for your thoughts. Honestly, I don't really spend time thinking about what others say. It's a tough game to play in life. I've always taught my kids that. I am anything but perfect, and also very human...so, yes, I guess if I hear something unfairly critical I think it through for truths or falsehoods. All that I know regarding the handling of the body is my own viewpoint of it, I can't speak for the other five people there. I was there on May 16, not May 1 during the initial discovery. One thing I can say is that we definitely weren't trained in this endeavor. Could we have done better? Probably. Given what we/I knew at the time, I feel good about everything we did and how I handled things. Had I the opportunity to go back and have the experience all over again, I'd change very little other than to change out the finished roll of 35mm film and crank out another 36 exposures. I don't watch many Everest-related videos....I spend most of my time KZbin-ing on guitar teacher videos, techniques, new guitar reviews, things of that nature. In this video I'm not referring to any person. If I had a huge grudge about someone I'd just reach out and have a chat. It's all good...and, hey, as I also tell my kids, 'it's none of your business what other people think of you.' I endeavor to practice what I preach and treat even the so-called haters with decency and respect. When we all look back on this, it's just a mountain and two missing people....at the end of the day/end of this life, it does matter how one handles oneself in disagreements. I'm just practicing for the end of it all. Ya never know when it's going to happen...so, better to practice every time there's a chance. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts, I appreciate that you took the time to write. Godspeed to all the Mystery of Mallory & Irvine sleuths! Cheers!

@@EverestMystery I appreciate your response as well. For the internet drama kinda stuff, I always put the heaviest weighting on the folks who do the work and go at it with some vigor. That is definitely you, your co-expeditioners and the crews and staff who made the efforts to climb, dig and strain for those truths. I'm kinda surprised the critical reaction to the '99 handling of Mallory's body. I remember reading the published articles back then and I felt like there was the best care and reverence taken to document the find. I hope one day somebody, *anyone* can find Irvine's body, whatever effects he might have on his person (yes the camera) whether that be in crevasse at 8k+ meters or some government warehouse. I always think of that last scene of Indiana Jones's first movie :-) Cheers to you and all.

If it is ever proven that they reached the summit it doesn't change a thing about Hillary and Tenzig, in mountaineering it doesn't count if you don't come back down. Not my rules, they were around long before I was.

Dear Mr. Pollard: I dig your frank recounting on the finding of Mr. Mallory ... Warts and all -- and you shared things I already should've known already about Mallory. Especially him carrying 2 Goggles -- doh(!) And it's right in the picture too. Keep at it, good Thom -- I believe this is the proverbial, 'Water back into the Well ...' and for that, BRAVO-! I really hope they never make a film , for the reason we all know too much about the subject to enjoy it , as an amateur historian im constantly disappointed in films on real Historical subjects , If they play them they must play them doer , the Edwardians rarely smile , just check out Photos of that time , they also must play them painfully polite , and with an almost God given right above any other nation , they believed this everyone in Britain believed this , you got to play him like dying for the nation is the greatest achievement a man can make . We all believed this too . We all were brainwashed with the Empire for years , and it was Stronger in the 1920s than anytime , the Words of Captain Laurence Oats ringing in their ears . This was very real , so real that even a kid born in the 60s like me believed it without an Empire. on the flip side the Church of England was not very effective in counselling grief and Spiritualists sprung up everywhere , there was more belief in this than god . the Art sweeping Europe was DaDa , whole towns were wiped out of men , the French were embroiled in grief , to this day its still a part of their culture , to miss these facts of these people out of a film would be like making an 80s film without a Sony Walkman

"Because it's there" was a typical, no-nonsense, get-a-grip comment from a man who did not tolerate fools gladly. I'm just re-reading two books - "Last Climb" by Breashears (a superb climber, photographer, writer) & Salkeld, and "The Second Death of George Mallory" by Messner. Mallory & Messner - what a team they would have made :-)

Ah, a British gentleman messaged me and said about the same about 'Because it's there'...it makes sense and makes me laugh! Like GLM was looking at the reporter and giving him a little dig....that has lasted nearly 100 years. The book 'Last Climb', I believe that is the one that has my photograph of GLM's boot at the end of it. Unfortunately my colleague David nor Audrey asked me about the watch. There is some incorrect reporting in the book (said the hands had all fallen off when we found it). That Messner book...wow, I should look it up. I'm reading Camp Six by Frank Smythe, about the 1933 British Everest expedition. Enjoy!
