About this video: Maltipoo Training: Cody is a 2 y/o maltese poodle that has severe separation anxiety from his owner. Prior to training intervention Cody's baseline response to separation was to bark incessantly, whine, jump and pace until the owner returned. This video illustrates 1. Establishing a base in training 2. Systematically integrating base exercises into situations that helps Cody learn to cope with separation. Level of difficultly increases as he shows us that he’s ready.

Hello, Alyssa. Thank you for this video. My boyfriend and I have adopted a 3/4 yr. old poodle mix, (possibly adopted multiple times) from a shelter about a year ago. He has severe separation anxiety and this symptoms include the following: barking, whining, scratching at the door, pacing, and finally problems with eating. This video was very informative and encouraging for us specifically since we have just moved into a pretty strict apartment complex. Do you have other videos with more information regarding SA training? Should we train our dog, Charlie, with so many treats when he has not been fed? Thank you very much, Melissa.

Aria Ll the most common advice is to give your dog a food toy to counter condition your dog to your departures. Dogs that have high anxiety will most likely have little interest in eating food, which is why it becomes necessary to break it up into smaller “stepping stones” that creates and then builds smaller successes. While you’re implanting a training plan it’s helpful to find a friend, family member or neighbor that might be interested in watching your dog when you have to be our during the day. Let me know if you have more questions. If you want more supper you can schedule a Skype consult by going to my website www.legendsdogtraining.com best, Alyssa Rose

For how long does this training need to continue? I had a dog with separation anxiety which would bark until passing out if left home alone, or even if she couldn't see mee. I would love to get a dog, but I worry that this could happen again.The dog in question was a 5,5kg longhair dachs female, which I adopted from my father. I believe she never had to be alone before she moved to me and I tried to leave her at home while going to work. I remember the dog sounding very hoarse when greeting me when I came home. A few days later i got an handwritten anonymous letter telling me to hand back the dog and get a cat. I put two and two together an brought the dog to work the next day and the following years which was difficult but also rewarding for both me and the dog. I was told to train the dog to relax when in a cage so that I could leave her in a cage when going to work. I didn't try this but maybe it would have worked. The dog was never trained very much, but would reluctanty sit if I had food or treats and came on command if she wanted.

0o0o099999 hey, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Training timeline depends on the intensity of the underlying anxiety, how well the training and management plan is implemented and the extent to which anxious behaviors have been rehearsed. Crates can be helpful for anxious dogs that identify crates as a safe place, or it can compound the problem. It really depends on the dog and the training history. There’s a lot to be done proactively to teach a puppy to grow into an adult that is comfortable being left alone. I recommend creating a puppy proofed area that is centrally located in the house and then to condition calm, positive associations with that space. If you happen to adopt in the future you should check out my online course basetrainingmethod.com It’s primarily geared towards behavior modification for dogs that exhibit fearful, anxious, aggressive or hyperactive behavior but it can also be used to get young pups off to a strong start. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to write in. Best, Alyssa Rose, CPDT-KA

My maltipoo is a little over a year old, and has extreme seperation anxiety. The only thing that remotely helps when I leave the house, is to give her a chewy treat right before I leave, and leave calming music on as well. I think it's because she understands that I'm leaving.

Hi, thanks for writing in! It's common for dogs to deal with stress/anxiety more effectively when it is part of their routine. For example, some dogs can tolerate being left alone when someone leaves for work each morning, but become distressed if you decide to go out in the evening. Small changes in a dog's routine or environment can trigger symptoms to rise to the surface. If you are have any interest in exercises that might help with your dog's separation anxiety, I have an online class starting next week that focuses on calming exercises on a training mat. The mat becomes kind of like a safe space for the dog, and can help a dog to develop healthier coping mechanisms when they are feeling anxious. The class is called "Calm Connections." Here's a link, if you're interested to learn more: www.legendsdogtraining.com/live-classes/ Thanks again for your comment. Reach out at any time with questions. Best, Alyssa Rose

I'll have to be honest, this is stupid. My family owns three maltipoo's and we didn't have to go through any training; besides potty training as puppies. These dogs are actually one of the smartest dogs, and if you communicate to them properly, they'll listen. For example my dog out of the three, is probably the best trained malitipoo, and he's not even trained. All they need is love and caring, and also a walk every now and then. Maltipoo's love walks and just being around there owners.

Matt Haruff Hey Matt! Thanks for watching my video. Separation Anxiety is brought on my a combination of genetics and environment. It is estimated that about ten percent of dogs have separation anxiety. The anxiety can present in different ways: barking, destructive behavior, involuntary urination or defecation, self mutilation (ie. some dogs chew on paws to the point that they cause real injury). These symptoms can be addressed through training exercises depicted in this video. This particular dog had been re-homed four times, most likely due to behavioral issues linked to anxiety. I do appreciate your comment, thank you again for watching. - Alyssa

I'm getting a puppy maltipoo in a few months and my parents go to work while I go to school and I want to stop puppy anxiety before I even have one because I feel like I can hurt him by leaving him for too long do you have any tips?
@legendsdogtraining
@legendsdogtraining 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Sorry for this late response. Here are my tips to stop separation anxiety before it starts: 1. Nighttime sleep: it’s a good idea to have your puppy sleep in a crate next to your bed this will help your puppy become more comfortable with being confined and “separated” even though you’ll still just be a few feet away. 2. Daytime “Safe Space:” I like to have a gated area or exercise pen set up in the central area of the house, like the kitchen or living room. This will be for times you do not have your full focus on your puppy to prevent chewing on furniture, accidents, as well as biting to get your attention. 3. Calming exercises. These are exercises that you can do with your puppy in combination with their crate and safe space. This will help them to build calm, positive associations with this space. If you’re interested, I have upcoming virtual classes for puppies and we cover all of this in the class. It meets for one hour, once a week, for six weeks. You can find more information or sign up for a virtual class through my website www.legendsdogtraining.com Thanks for watching and taking the time to write in. Best, Alyssa Rose

Allianna Brooke hi! Thanks for watching and writing in. Do you know what the breeder was feeding? It’s a good idea to try to be consistent. It’s normal for dogs and puppies to lose their appetite when they are stressed, and going to a new home is very stressful. Continue to offer small amounts of food mixed with something that is moist and meaty (like shredded chicken), and if she isn’t interested, wait an hour or so before offering again. Hopefully, she gets settled in soon! Best, Alyssa Rose

We discovered if we "borrow" our , year-old, tiny Grandpuppy, a Yorkie, he's fine. Even though Shorty is 8 years old. Recently, I had the displeasure of advising several neighbors about another neighbor's tragic death. I left Shorty alone, but with our disinterested cat in the house. Two hours later, it occurred to me, but he was fine. I'm wondering if it is because his owner has a small apartment, about 700 sq ft, versus our 2500+ sq ft house. I'd welcome your input on this theory. Or, is he just older and calmer? His "Dad" is an excellent doggo-Daddy and he's very well treated and loved. He loves us too. He's a mixed Jack Russell Terrorist, Beagle and ??? mix. Very chill too. Surprising, considering his main breed. LOL!

didanhtennis hi! Thanks for watching and commenting. This video didn’t depict the full progression of training conditions. This dog was initially so anxious that he exhibited signs of distress as his owner took even one or two steps away from him or if she walked into another room. The idea is to create a foundation or base and then build off of that base systematically so that the dog is learning to regulate stress in slower stress situations first and gradually building to higher stress situations. She was very excited to see someone come in the door because she knew it was time to go out to potty and get her sniff on. Puppy pads were put out for her but she never would use them. @legendsdogtraining
@legendsdogtraining 9 жыл бұрын
coco1101 You wrote in 10 months ago, this is a very delayed response, I apologize. A marker (ie. a clicker or verbal marker "yes") can be very helpful in training. You know this, but for anyone else reading this post that does not .... the clicker or verbal "yes" marks the moment that the dog offered desired behavior and predicts reinforcement. If you ARE NOT able to reinforce at the exact moment that the behavior is offered - it bridges that gap. If you ARE able to reinforce at the exact moment, then you can argue that the marker is not completely necessary. Nothing confusing for the dog if it is not used every time. The fact is that dogs are constantly receiving reinforcement whether it be from people or the environment, the absence of a click doesn't diminish the value of the reinforcement.

Hi, thanks for watching and commenting! Sometimes a bringing a second dog into the home can help. Sometimes it makes no difference, and sometimes it makes matters worse. For example, the second dog can become model behavior after the first dog (barking, scratching, pacing, whining, have accidents in the home) and now you have two dogs that need help instead of just one. However, I am glad to hear that it worked well in your situation. I think it's important for anyone to make sure that they truly WANT a second dog, versus getting one solely as a companion dog. Hey Bill! Thanks for watching my video. Everyone has a different expectation of what bringing a dog into their home means and what to do when the dog doesnt behave like rin tin tin. Some people might have a dog that barks non-stop and just accept. Some might relegate the dog to the outside. Others might relinquish the dog. Others might try to use some type of aversive to stop the behavior without questioning the underlying cause. Others want to help their dogs to better adapt. The dog in the video had been relinquished by four previous owners, it also seemed that the dog had been subjected to bark collars. It's likely that those collars made the problem even worse. I highly commend those people that commit to bringing out the best in their dog and help the dog adapt to a world that doesnt necessarily suit the dog's natural impulses. ramon corea I just saw this post, apologize for the delay in responding. Clickers have no meaning unless we give it meaning. It's a "neutral stimulus" unless the dog is properly conditioned to its sound. Trainers pair the click with high value reinforcement, using a 1:1 ratio. One click, one reward. Marine mammal trainers use whistles in the same way, they pair a whistle with high value reinforcement (ie. a fish). Thanks for watching my video!
