Baby Constipation: Natural Remedies, Signs & Causes

This happened to my newborn baby, who didn't have a stool for several days which made me extremely worried (thus searching for info online like this video and seeing the pediatrician), eventually we solved it and I want to share what I learned: Firstly, very important, it can be normal for babies not to poop for a few days, especially as they grow older, so don't immediately assume there's a problem. To determine if there's a reason for concern, watch for warning signs such as a hard belly, spitting out after feeding, nonstop crying (due to pain) and of course an unreasonable period of time without pooping. Or is it because he's not feeding enough and just needs to eat more? Make sure it's really constipation, because remember that some babies may be just fine not having a stool often and it can be natural. Now if you think there's a problem there, you can help your baby by doing things like a soft belly massage (with/without some oil), giving them a warm bath, stretching their legs ("bicycle" motions in air), and stimulating with the tip of a thermometer - consult your doctor of course. If everything fails to cause them to poop and you think they are constipated - a medicine that can really solve this issue is "glycerin suppository" (easily prescribed/ over the counter med), given in a small amount from below, which helps immediately. True you have to be careful, but when your baby struggles to make a stool for several long days after all natural remedies failed, and this medicine "releases" it immediately, the is nothing but feelings of relief and thankful to whoever created this magical medicine.

My baby is 3 weeks old and I don’t think she is old enough for the medicine but she hasn’t gone in like a day and a half and she is straining, and crying in pain. I just switched her formula brand due to recall but idk what else to do.

@@mirandaboyer8740 A single day without a stool is normal, to the best of my knowledge, you can still help her with one of the methods, and the above-mentioned medicine can be given at any age (just in smaller dosage).

Not pooping for 3 days or straining is not a sign of constipation. Exclusively breastfed babies have soft stools always even if they don't poo for several days or appear to strain or seem uncomfortable.

Sounds like your baby may be dehydrated! Increase your babies fluid intake by increasing your own water intake (if you’re breastfeeding)-if you’re formula feeding you may need to try a different formula or introduce baby probiotics. If your baby is eating solids, they may need more fiber!

A mother drinking cows milk does not make an exclusively breastfed baby's stools firm. Breastmilk is made from our blood not the contents of our stomach - about 1-2% of babies are allergic to the proteins in cows milk which can get into our blood stream and therefore the milk. But the signs of this are not constipation. Formula is constipating for some babies.

That’s really something to talk to your pediatrician about since he’s a preemie! Preemies have some additional risk factors that make constipation something to seek medical attention for ♥️♥️♥️

Generally the recommendation is to wait until 6 months to introduce food of any kind. Before then, if you're breastfeeding, increasing your own hydration, and introducing probiotics to baby may help!

Babies can go several days without having a bowel movement-if she needs the formula for nutrition then you should keep giving it to her unless you’d like to just try another type of formula. Breasted babes can go up to a week especially when they’re over a year and eating solids. If baby is not uncomfortable and is having plenty of wet diapers, there’s nothing specific you NEED to do!

Formula can cause some level of constipation-it’s normal for an exclusively breastfed baby to go a week or so without a bowel movement but nine days is pretty long. I’d see your pediatrician asap!

That can happen, especially if your baby is exclusively breastfed. But some babes may need some more hydration or fiber (if they're eating solids). I would not use water or juice until at LEAST a few months old, I would wait until around 6 months. Their bodies before that time cant handle/process the excess water or anything other than breast milk or formula. If you think he/she needs it definitely talk to their pediatrician before you give it to them. Js, My baby started having issues with gas at around the two to three week mark, often times it's their bodies learning to pass gas. (I just had my second, 6 weeks old now🤗🤗) and it can appear as if they're in pain, just try tummy massages , bouncing them around, that kind of thing. 😊 True constipation isn't common in babies that little. Take notes and talk to your pediatrician at her/his next appointment.

A newborn has general trouble with those first few weeks from a gastrointestinal standpoint since the gut is so immature still-hang in there! His body will adjust!
