First install this repo pack;

then update fedora-extras.repo;
su
yourpassword
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-extras.repo
now erase the text in the file and replace with the fedora-extras code found at the following page;
www.yellowdog-b...
Scroll down to the code box that starts with [fedora-extras]. The text in that box is what you will replace the original text with.
save it and close gedit.
now in the terminal and type;
su
yourpassword
yum install sdlmame
once installed you will need to edit the ini file
type in the terminal
su
yourpassword
gedit /etc/mame/mame.ini
open with text editor change the following;
change multithreading from 0 to 1
change video from opengl to soft
change joystick from 0 to 1
also add
autoframeskip 1
to the very bottom of the file. Then save quit and type mame in the terminal. Enjoy.

the text editor is called gedit. Edit the mame ini by typing su, yourpassword, then gedit /etc/mame/mame.ini as seen in the tutorial.

@ryougadeka I am using an HDMI cable and I installed YDL at a resolution of 720p. The set used in this video is a 1080i HD CRT TV. They are not really mass produced anymore but they do exists. The quality of the emulators is generally good as long as you are emulating systems before the PSONE generation. There is no gpu acceleration in ps3 linux so 3D based systems are mostly unplayable.

I am using YDL in all my videos. Gnome is a desktop manager that I use with YDL in this viedo and it is an available option with a default YD install. If you do not change it however the system defaults to the E17 desktop manager.

certain changes to the mame ini should help the application run better with linux on the ps3. I am using 720p in this video (video mode 3). If you are running linux in 1080 i/p it will hurt emulator performance. If you installed at 1080i/p resolution try switching to a lower resolution. If you dont know how to do that see YDL 6.x guide in the video description. You can change the resolution out right or add multiple resolution options at boot.

Its in fact supported by sony, google "ps3 other os" and the fist listing should be the playstation homepage. You may have also noticed the "install other os" option in the system settings of the XMB. You can easily switch between linux and the ps3 xmb.

find the 2 player rom for the game and add it to the rom folder with the 4 player rom. you can also configure the controls so that your controller controls a different player. e.g. configure your joypad for player 2 for homer, 3 for bart, 4 for lisa. finding the 2 player rom is the better option.

Its a Sony WEGA 1080i CRT model kv-30hs420. Bought it off craigslist for $250.00, its heavy but has color representation and a contrast ratio that is superior to LCD's and plasmas that cost 3x as much.

you dont need to modify your ps3 to do accomplish what you see in my video. Its a feature in the xmb's system settings called otheros. It lets you install a Linux operating system on the ps3. In the video I am using Yellow Dog Linux.

because you can ;). Unlike xbox 1 installing linux on the ps3 requires no hardware modification and is supported by sony thus it will not void your warranty. Also flash as well as a bevy of other software runs fine on the ps3 linux check out my other videos.

Yes you can use a controller. If you look at my "Playstation 3 Yellow Dog Linux 6 Dualshock 3 Killer Instinct" you will see that a wireless DS3/6A works fine.

60gb model has both the EE and GS soldered on to the motherboard thus it does not use emulation to play ps2 games it runs them using the native hardware. Formatting will only delete things you added to your ps3 it will not lose and functions that came with the system.

it is in fact running at 720p. I have replicated the process on my friends ps3. I have also help others on youtube achieve the same. For instance check out the user deadvideogamer video I added to my YDL playlist. I recently helped him set up his ps3 with mame. It sounds you are running at a higher resolution. try section III - 2r of my guide its fairly strait forward. mostly copy and paste. try adding both the sd and hd options. then just hit tab at kboot to select your resolution.

yes a DS3/6A is an abbreviation for a playstation 3 controller. DS3 is dualshock 3 and 6A is sixaxis.

the ps3 controller will work out of the box wired with mame. wireless also works after a little configuration.

That would require an HDCP compatible video card and a desktop computer to plug it into. Not to mention a wireless controller. Since I already own a ps3 neither of the aforementioned purchases are necessary. Just one reliable box to play current generation games, old school games, blu-ray's, and a bevy of other media not to mention all its other computer'esque functions.

Text for the emulators is fine, text for some web pages can be difficult to discern from my couch. I use the default YD resolution which is video mode 3.

what LCD or plasmas? They vary in quality considerably. Aspects such as refresh rate, color representation, contrast ratio and the ability to handle interlacing of SD signals are all aspects that have improved greatly with both LCD's and plasmas. However to rival a decent quality HD CRT its gonna cost a lot more money.

Sony went through the trouble of creating a virtualization environment and giving the option in the xmb, so I would say its supported. You may not have access to the RSX but you do have access to the cell and 6 spe's as well as development kits to utilize them. Google "ps3 gravity grid" and you'll see researchers harnessing the hardware for something other then games. As for flash9 thats a 3rd party who has not bothered to make the newest flash available for PPC. I wouldnt say thats sonys fault

@efaustus9 I've seen someone run Bloody Roar 2 on MAME and it ran at about between 15-30 fps (better than I thought but annoying to try and play). BTW what would you suggest YDL,Ubuntu,or Fedora for PS3. I've heard Fedora is the most popular while Ubuntu had the best functions and YDL had the best compatibility.

Im sorry I intended to reply but by accident I hit remove, which is why the rest of your comments remain. As will this one :D. Im not trying to argue either just give my perspective. As for adobe they just decided to go open with flash so hopefully that should help in getting fully functional flash9 on ppc linux. Its true there is no wine but there is Qemu if you want to play starcraft or diablo. PS3 Linux is great for some things just dont expect it to replace your PC.

Did you also add autoframeskip 1. As for the controller this little quirk is quite the same for PC version of mame. Just keep hitting the same button until the the input line for that button disappears. Then move down to the next button rinse repeat.

However unlike a PC I am playing the games on my 30" HDTV through my surround Sound on my couch. Instead of on my 17" monitor through my stereo speakers at my desk. I have done both and a prefer the former. The former is also more conducive to some old school multilayer.

i was able to install the repo pack but now i have a new problem. when i did the su passowrd: yum install sdlmame it said alot of stuff like temporary, unavailable, error, etc. so now what?

In that you are just getting ps3 be sure that it is a phat/shiny model as the ps3 slim does not support otheros/linux. No issues post install the two coexist just fine. I have a video demoing that aspect.

Since MAME uses software to utilize 3D graphics, do 3D arcade games (i.e Tekken or Soul Edge) also work? If so do you get a decent frame-rate?

Hi Thank you!! I was planning on getting the new slim design. I was not aware of those issues as I'm new to the PS3 scene along with adding Linux to it. I know computers so it should be to hard for me. Is ubuntu-8.10-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso doable on these new PS3's I really like these new ones and it would be easier for me than having to track down the shiney fat one. Any suggestions?

I installed sdlmame from the terminal and when I looked in the mame.ini there was no multithreading line, so I added it. Also, this seems to run very slow on my PS3. Mapping buttons to the six-axis is also quirky, I hit a button and it acknowledges it, but then when I hit down to go to the next input, it adds "down" to the button assignment as well.

ubuntu had alot of issues. I thought i had installed it correctly but it was missing files. Hence making it unable to work at all. I was trying to use 8.10. I am now just switching to Yellow Dog 6.1. I got tired of trying to get Ubuntu to work.

should be able too. Though yellow dog will only recognize two bluetooth controllers the other two will need to be usb.

ok if its not the resolution then maybe its defaulting to the version of Mame you installed previously. try the command "yum search mame". see if you have any variations of that application installed. note it will say if its installed on the right hand side across from the program name. Then try yum remove mameversion installed e.g. yum remove mame. once you removed all versions try my mame walk though again. mame shouldn't require much tweaking if you are running at 720p or lower.

sony ceased development on the other os hypervisior before the slims release. The slim has changes in the hardware which would require changes to the hypervisior. . No more funding or development for the hypervisior no linux on the ps3 slim. Sony removed the other os feature from the slim as a cost saving measure.
