So in a nutshell.. the Mamiya definitely has the "cooke" look. At a fraction of the price. Soft buttery imagery. Thanks so much for this video!

What version lens did you end up collecting. C or C N?
@VisionBridgeMedia
@VisionBridgeMedia 5 жыл бұрын
Mostly C I think the 35 was a N. From what I could tell there is no difference in the optics between the C and the N. I'd say get the one thats the least expensive and in the best condition and not worry about the letter.
@TitoFernandes
@TitoFernandes 5 жыл бұрын
VisionBridgeMedia thank you. I was questioned the multi coat on the M vs the C. I still feel the older and the least coated the glass is the more character the lens will have against clinical digital sensors. I think I’ll stick to C as well. Thank you for your test. Really inspired my interest and current passion for this beautiful glass.
@VisionBridgeMedia

Tito Fernandes I was unable to determine beyond a doubt that there was a difference in the coatings between any of the lenses. Most believe that the lenses are essentially the same with improved mechanics on the newer N lenses. I know the 35 the 35 N that I have looks great. But the older lenses may be cheaper and if they look good then that’s even better. I settled on the C as well mainly because there were a lot of them around and easy to get. I was very pleased with how they looked once I put them up.

@TitoFernandes
@TitoFernandes 4 жыл бұрын
Stephen Franchek not sure what you mean with Anamorphic since these lenses are aspherical. I got 14 of these lenses and I’m using them as is with mount adapters on full frame film cameras. Stellar results.

I want a set of these before they will cost 1k each! Is the 80mm 2.8 good as well? I found 645 analog camera with the 2.8-on it and I'm worried If the image quality is considerably worse than the others on the set...

It's as good as the other lenses in the set, it just isn't the quality of the 80 1.9.

Great video! Do you have any experience with the N versions of these Mamiya Secor C lenses? What is the difference?
@VisionBridgeMedia
@VisionBridgeMedia 4 жыл бұрын
I haven’t used the N version. Everything I’ve been able to learn about them is that they are virtually the same glass and perform similarly with equal sharpness and contrast. In my research the N constantly came up is simply meaning “new” and that’s all. There is some debate as to there is additional coating on the N but even that I haven’t been able to confirm. From what Ive gathered they are both equal in quality.

I can't tell why, but the Cookes all look a little bit more dimensional as you said. Something about how it resolves the shadows and highlights on the skin. But I'm impressed how good the Mamiyas compare. Thanks for the test.

I’m filming a horror short, And I’m looking for a vintage type vibe. I was thinking about Zeiss Superspeeds, but these Mamiya’s look like some solid lenses. Would you choose the Mamiya’s in this scenario?
@VisionBridgeMedia
@VisionBridgeMedia 5 жыл бұрын
Brian’s Ghoul Squad speeds are always a solid choice. They are a better lens. What’s great about making your own movie you can decide what you want the feel to be. The Mamiya are a really solid lens for the money. For me I wanted to be able to have another alternate to offer to cover full frame on my Monstro once I got them and shot some stuff I was really in to them.

VisionBridgeMedia For sure, I’ll be using a RED E.Dragon. I’ve never used the Mamiya’s, but I intend on cropping down to 2.35. Something about these lenses feel like they can achieve a cool look. Superspeeds are awesome and I’ve used them. I’m just wondering if I use the Mamiya’s if I’m taking a risk haha.
@VisionBridgeMedia
@VisionBridgeMedia 5 жыл бұрын
Brian’s Ghoul Squad I don’t think it’s too much of a risk. After all the Artemis app includes the Mamiya lenses. I think a lot of people have discovered them. They just aren’t talking about it.

Outsider_Brian I don’t know if you made your movie or not yet, but I also have an Epic Dragon and probably wouldn’t use these lenses on it unless I had a really solid G&E package/crew. Love the heck outta my Dragon, but it’s just not a good sensor if you find yourself in low light shooting conditions. The super speeds would suite you better in those conditions. I just ordered my Mamiya set (currently being cinevised by Duclos) because I plan to get either a couple of Kinefinity Mavo Edge or Sony FX9 cameras. Low light is not an issue for those cameras

This is the most in-depth comparison video on KZbin I've seen so thanks! How have they performed for you on the field? Did you get them cine-modded too?
@VisionBridgeMedia
@VisionBridgeMedia 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind reply. I did a semi Cine-mod by adding focus gears from Simmond. They work great. I didn’t bother de-clicking the iris I rarely find myself between stops so I didn’t put any extra work into it. I used them on a short film and I did run into some issues. The focus motor had too much torque and had jammed a couple of the focus mechanisms. 1 was repaired and works fine now but the other was not repairable. If I were to do this again I’d send them in and have them looked over and lubed properly by a pro. They looked amazing though. I believe them to be an excellent choice for projects like that though. If I had more confidence that they could stand up to the rigors of commercial production I’d score them higher. I do enjoy them when I have the right project to use them on and continue to be impressed by how good they look for the money.

What mount adapter did you use for the lenses? These look amazing! Thanks for doing this
@VisionBridgeMedia
@VisionBridgeMedia 5 жыл бұрын
Just to see if this would work I bought a Fotodiox Pro M645-EOS. After doing the test and seeing the positive results I’ve purchased a Kippertie optical expander mount for the Monstro. The Fotodiox works fine but word to the wise the mount isn’t as solid as I would prefer and allows for some play with the lens when using a follow focus. The movement of the lens is visible in the image when pulling focus. It will require some finesse and accommodation for if used. There are locking versions that I’m sure are superior but they are so expensive I feel that it goes against the whole idea of using a relatively inexpensive lens that performs like an expensive lens when the adapter is 3x more expensive then the lens. I’m glad you found the video informative. Thanks for the positive feedback!
