And it's sometimes hard for people who have been abused to give any other accused parent even the slightest benefit of the doubt. I can't tell you how many comments I've read that said something along the lines of, "I was abused by my mom, so I know for a fact that Joan Crawford abused her children" or "Anyone who doesn't believe this abuse happened is in denial." Whether Christina was 100% truthful or not, to many who knew her, Joan was still a loyal, loving, decent, kind & generous person.

I read the book and many of the things she claimed were abuse were just how parents disaplined their children in that era.I believe Joan Crawford was a complex woman with many sides and maybe the same can be said of her daughter Christina.

Bette Davis saw nothing. She and Crawford never socialized nor did their children. I've seen the MDA clip. Please think about it for a moment. Joan was the "celebrity" who was asked to be on the telethon. Christina was not a celebrity & nobody was asking her to be on telethons. Joan herself brought Christina along. If she wanted to hide Christina away, why would Joan bring her? In fact, Joan was giving her still-aspiring-actress daughter a little free publicity. Joan often got her jobs.

Remeber that Mommie Dearest wasn't told from an objective point of view, so, yes, people are allowed to doubt a little about all the facts. Things tends to seem bigger and worse when you are a child, and we can't be sure that EVERYTHING Christina wrote was true.

It's also interesting how all the comments that are popular (the ones that have lots of thumbs up votes one minute), and positive toward Joan, are quickly voted back down to nothing. Hmmmm, are the Joan Crawford haters really around in such large numbers? Or are they just really, really insecure??? Let's see how fast this comment fades...I for one am voting myself UP:)

No offense, but is this a reading comprehension issue? Because obviously I am well aware of Christina's many, many outrageous claims against Joan. Also, obviously, I was not randomly addressing these. I was specifically addressing what YOU claimed; namely that "there were many other celebrities that were witness to Joan's abuse of Christina." This, as I previously noted, is simply untrue. There are in fact no known CELEBRITIES (nor anyone else) who witnessed any actual abuse. This is fact.

Yeah mom used to beat me with anything she could get her hands on, she was possibly the meanest women I've ever known and you know what, I thank her everyday for it because it made me a person that didn't take shit from anyone and I thank her for that...so for all you bleeding hearts who don't believe in disciplining your children may I say "get a life" you're the very reason that nobody's responsible for their actions, it's always somebody elses fault.
@calvertvaux5061
@calvertvaux5061 11 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but this is simply not true. Some celebrities made rather vague accusations, some saying she was extremely strict at times (Joan herself fully admitted being way TOO strict) but nobody ever witnessed the awful abuse Christina described. Helen Hayes came the closest, but she only said that Joan was so strict with some of her discipline of her son that she herself thought it could border on "cruel." None of them saw anything that, at that time anyway, would generally considered "abusive."

@ClearlyBored1 Christina only released the book AFTER her mothers death and finding she was left nothing in the will, when she knew she cound not defend herself against Christinas lies. Christina was entitled to nothing, it was Joans will and her choice, end of story. Both "children" had cut themselves off from their mother years before, so why include them in her will? No one has backed up Christinas lies, even those said to have been abused. Its Christina that was the monster, insane monster.

@Jessica8674 so right.. and interestingly things like small video cams and the internet are exposing this abusive behavior from time to time.. one of the most recent examples is the judge that was videotaped beating his daughter.. and the mother who participated in this crime.. and the problem the daughter and the mother/wife had is that the guy was a judge.. a law enforcement official. Similarly JC had seemingly massive power and could destroy careers in Hollywood for anyone that spoke out.

@upcycle There has never been any evidence than or now of any of the claims that Joans daughter made and no other person has said they were ready to stand in court to say otherwise. The above clip shows, Joans adopted daughter has continued to try to cash in on her mothers name. If these claims were made today, she would not loose anything, as there needs to be proof, ofwhich there has never been any, just here-say and a money making book read by people too willing to believe anything

@joeinparis You are so right. People always say Joan was a good person based on her talent and stardom but that doesn't have to do anything with her being a good mother. My mom was an example in the comunity, raising her children alone but she would hit us with broom sticks, her high heels, she would choke us, throw large objects at us, scare us to death (I'm not joking) , but she never touched my brother. I guess it's difficult to understand something you haven't seen or experienced.

There were actually many other celebrities that were witness to Joans abuse of christina. (kirk Douglas said she was like a drill sergeant. But as Faye Dunaway said, "only those two know what went on in that relationship". Christina described the wire hanger incident and told it differently than portrayed in the movie. this caused me to take "pause".

One has to wonder if this avid collector had Mommie Dearest in his collection?! If so, he should know what the LAST thing Christina wants to do is go through photo albums of the woman she wrote about as an *alleged* abuser, and fawn all over them. She even mentioned guys like him in the book! I love Joan Crawford madly, as a woman and an actress--but this clip seems very, very awkward to me.

as christina told in an interview: at a small party Joan was giving, christina and christopher had been playing and christina accidentally slammed her brothers hand in a door she had closed. Christopher was crying and Joan took christinas hand and slammed hers in the door as punishment. one man at the party became physically ill at seeing what took place...

LOL @ "go look it up." I mean, we all form opinions based on what we read, see and hear, but considering how many different ways people view Joan Crawford, just looking it up won't ever prove any one viewpoint. I would just add that none of us who didn't actually know and directly interact with Joan Crawford in life, could possibly diagnose her alleged "personality disorders" after her death. All such diagnoses made by random amateurs are speculative & totally silly. Go look it up:)

@Jessica8674 I have been researching soimething called "The Slave Community".. And it is a kind of pattern of behavior that gets passed on generation to generation.. they often use things like doing traumatic things to a child to make them afraid.. or to hurt them physically. What we now know is that his can do emotional damage to a child.. this can show up as mental illness and/or sociopaths, such as narcissism, which JC exhibited. Which is what also made her charismatic.

Bette Davis saw some of the abuse too. There is a video currently on KZbin of the 1968 MDA telethon with Jerry Lewis. Jerry introduces Joan who reads a poem then makes a generous contribution. Joan then introduces Christina to the telethon audience -- you can clearly hear the disgust in her voice. After Christina comes out smiles and shakes Jerry's hand, Joan (who just can't bare being upstaged) yanks Christina by the hand and hastily leads her offstage. A brief glimpse of the "real" Joan.

@ContrastY i think you are on to something about the idea that JC used her children for publicity. I found it quite puzzling that she never had any biological children as well.. Also, it is interesting to note that purportedly she liked to be called "Billy" as a child. I am wondering if she may have been intersexed and unable to bear children.
