Lets be honest here. The only reason he got such a long sentence was because the police were embarrassed he had gotten away with it for so long. It's kind of depressing that a guy who basically just stole, trespassed and lied got a bigger sentence then many killers, rapists, and psychopaths.

He committed upwards of 60 armed robberies before his most recent arrest. Given that he did yet another armed robbery after escaping, it showed that he had no intention of turning around his life. It's incredibly lucky no one died yet, including himself. He was sentenced to 45 before he escaped the first time. The sentence is warranted but I agree that the US really should have much better rehab programs.

This was years ago, back in the 1990s.He was in hospital for a psychiatric assessment at his own request, as he realised that he needed help after being arrested for shoplifting. He actually did reasonably well. Following treatment/therapy he was able to get sheltered accommodation and sort himself out with the help of some of his family. One relative in particular was very helpful, setting up a trust fund for him, this removed a lot of stress and he was able to make some progress. He was able to move from a shared house to a small flat that was owned by a sheltered housing charity.

Often, poverty and desperation are the biggest motivators for theft, and most of the people who engage in it are not violent or malicious people. He was clearly trying to do good and live a normal life despite his own desperation, and he deserves to be rehabilitated to get his life back on track and prevent him from reoffending, not locked away for 45 years. If he hadn't escaped, then he would have had a relatively short sentence. However because he escaped, the sentence automatically in increased. It is not the judge that sets the sentence, but laws to outline the minimum and maximum sentence for crimes, and the main crime committed waa escaping custody. That is why his sentence was so long. For full detail ask a lawyer or judge as the above is the extent of my legal knowledge for this case.

It's funny that escaping itself is a crime. In Finland it isn't BUT you will get alot more harsher time to spend in prison (less freedoms so to speak). It is considered to be natural to be free so acting on that isn't illegal but usually to escape you need to commit a crime or two to do it and that is what lengthens the sentence in Finland

This is something I will never understand. Of course you would try to escape from prison if given the chance... They are robbing you of your human right called 'freedom'. Prisoners usually serve less than half of their sentence. The only time "45 years" really means 45 years is when they tack on "without possibility of parole" to the end of it. Plus the fact that he had a gun - that he shot - made it worse, as did the fact that he escaped. Escaping is like shooting yourself in the foot - you're practically guaranteeing that you'll spend more time in prison than you otherwise would have.

@@MrsMuffin11 I think I heard somewhere (years ago), that someplaces consider the urge to escape prison as natural, so further punishment for escaping might be seen as entrapment. Not letting people escape is a major function of a prison. If prison "A" has better security than prison "B," and escaping results in a punishment, you essentially end up punishing people for escaping a prison that's not as good at being a prison.

There was this homeless kid at my high school who lived in walmart behind the dog food. I don't even see this guy as a criminal, he's like a mixture of Batman, Robin Hood and an Anti-Santa Claus. He plans out way in advance and lurked on roofs....freaking Batman. He stole from the rich companies who make money off child labor and over charge the people, so that's Robin Hood right there, and gave free toys to kids, that's Santa....Now sure holding people at gun point is a bit much, but never intending to hurt anyone, and even cracking a joke to the confused terrified people? He's also go a bit of Joker in him. And people want him locked up? This man has got some A+ talent and is still far smarter and kinder then most humans out there.

I know this is the smallest detail here but... How did he lock them on the freezer? Walk-in freezers can be opened from the inside, even when locked from the outside, at least from what I remember from working at a McDonald's in Europe. The alarm that would go off when pressing the emergency button was also insanely loud.
@MrMontanaNights
@MrMontanaNights 11 ай бұрын
I know some of the restaurants I've cooked at had walk ins that did let you put a padlock on the outside. Simply putting a screwdriver through the hole would have locked it. The inside push thing was so you don't get locked in on accident. It doesn't stop someone from locking it on purpose. I've never seen one with an alarm either but this was 10-15 years ago and not fast food places.
@troublesometoaster4492
@troublesometoaster4492 11 ай бұрын
@@MrMontanaNights Oh okay that's true, ours had an actual lock with key so you couldn't use a padlock on it. Pushing the button would unlock it, but it would also be connected to the security system, using a different tone from the robbery alarm tho. I guess that was to make sure people knew someone got locked in case assistance was necessary, or the unlocking thingy failed.
@ItApproaches

They weren't locked in, just probably told don't come out, till the cops open the door. They were scared so they obeyed. I know those don't lock and have a release from the inside as I worked at a pizza place for a while and a cafe.

To all the people claiming the 45 year sentence is too high, the reason he is in jail for so long is because he held multiple people hostage at GUNPOINT on multiple occasions. That is a very serious crime and he did it multiple times. The fact that he is charming and acts like Batman is irrelevant.
