My local Coca-Cola Bottling Plant used to have a machine in front of their office door, available to the public. It also had nothing but Mystery Flavor options, but the machine was actually used by the plant to sell damaged products; random cans that were perfectly drinkable, but maybe fell and dented during packaging, etc.. and at 15 cents per can, it was definitely worth whatever popped out. I think there was a complaint at some point and they took the machine down, but I miss popping a nickel and dime into the machine and getting something I might not have gotten otherwise.

@@bensoncheung2801 probably more along the lines of people complaining that they spend 15 cents on a bottle that was broken so much that they couldn't open it or it was empty. which isn't exactly a smart idea to complain about if it didn't happen too frequently - like imagine only every 4th can being unusable or empty/leaking, you'd still go out with a huge win in beverage. Some people just complain about everything honestly.

@@bensoncheung2801 It's illegal and unsafe to sell dented canned foods actually. When you have a severe dent, the sharp edges on the crease can cause a tiny hole to form, then air enters the can, causing botulism bacteria to grow and somebody who eats it dies. Grocery stores and restaurants regularly get cited by the health inspector for dented cans. Could be something similar with the health department.

IIRC companies that retire brands always keep a tiny batch of them for sale to preserve the trademark. I remember hearing about a small independent store in NYC that sold all this stuff. That said I wouldn’t be surprised if what was in the cans of old soda wasn’t the same stuff. Hard to believe they’d keep the ingredients and dedicate a bottling/canning run for a disused product.

Squirt is still available all over the place here in Seattle where that mystery soda machine was, so I'm not sure why anybody is saying it's discontinued. As far as I know, it has just always been difficult or impossible to find in certain parts of the country.

1:55 - Squirt isn't discontinued. It may be a little harder to find than most other soda brands, but it's fairly widely available (typically distributed in conjunction with other Keurig-Dr. Pepper brands such as 7up, RC, Sunkist, Canada Dry, and A&W). Likewise with the Sunkist Cherry Limeade.

A normal soda machine is basically a glorified fridge, and it takes a fair bit of electricity to feed it, especially on days when it's baking in the sun. That means it has to plug in like a fridge, and I don't think too many people would be okay with some random vending machine jacking their electricity without their consent. If it was indeed serving "ice cold drinks" as you say, it must have been doing so with the consent of the business whose electricity it was using. The mechanism could have been rigged to run off a car battery or something, but that could only serve ambient temperature drinks.

In college I lived a couple blocks from this machine. I didn’t realize it had such lore until it was missing one day. I was just sad I couldn’t get my random sodas anymore. From what I heard, it was owned by the locksmith. Somewhere in town they had a storage unit with a bunch of retro sodas they used to restock it.

I recently saw a mystery Coke machine in Shoreline! It's definitely not THE Coke machine, but it could have been one previously found in Shoreline. I don't know what the real story is behind the machine's disappearance, but in 2016 a new Link light rail station opened across the street, and that sidewalk was redone with a bus shelter for easy transfers. Perhaps it was just getting to old or malfunctioning, or perhaps it was evicted for a new bus stop, or maybe some combination of the two.
