The timing of this is kinda hilarious due to the mention of the Marina x Charli XCX forgotten collab. Charli's "Girl, So Confusing" being rumored to be about Marina, Lorde etc etc. Then an actual remix with Lorde comes out and Marina reacted to it, which some pop culture gays interpreted as her inserting herself.

Just to add a bit of context, the whole “releasing a single 2 months after release” thing for Power & Control, it wasn’t Marina specific. It was nearly every UK single release up until 2014 because of the power of “radio premieres” in the UK. The idea was that the song would be on pre order for a month or two to ensure a higher peak on the more volatile UK charts. This happened even for western pop stars, for example, Roar by Katy Perry came out 1 month after its release in America in the UK. This however came to a head in 2015 when a cover of Uptown Funk reached the #1 spot before the actual song was even released.

I vividly remember when I first heard about Marina. The year was 2012, I was waiting to go to class freshman year of high school, and one of my besties (Jillian) tells me I’d love this girl named Marina and the Diamonds. I heard Primadonna Girl once and I was hooked.

Right next to MCR’s Black Parade and P!ATD’s A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, this is probably my most listened to album. I love singing Primadonna at Karaoke, and somehow songs from this album keep ending up on playlists I make. I never read any of the tumblr posts, but that’s because I didn’t have mutuals that liked Marina.

I love this. I think I found the link to the video from the Marina subreddit. I'm glad you touched on Die Life. IIRC from the fan wikia, it was meant to be her second album while EH was a side project to be released under the same name rather than "MatD". I think one of the reasons Die Life was scrapped was because her record label didn't want to fund both projects. I find it funny she bankrupted them from costs induced by producing EH and its music videos. There's something weirdly sombre about Die Life. It's an album that never was in the end, yet the songs that would have made it up are around in some way (popular unreleased tracks from the time--Miss Y, Scab and Plaster, Jealousy--and early demo versions of EH tracks--like the Radioactive guitar dance track version--which have a different feel to them).

Electra Heart was my first “era” 😭 I was there for the whole thing thanks to deviant art (people introducing me to the album via their fan art and OCS) and I used to draw so many characters based on this album. I still adore this era and the family jewels. It’s a major part of my evolution 😅

You mentioned not being aware of other archetype focussed albums. Tori Amos did it in the mid 2000s with American Doll Posse. I remember her doing some promo stuff as the characters at the time. This was pretty early social media days but I could've sworn there was an interactive website for it outlining the characters. Definitely a similar vibe too just very Tori. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't some influence on Marina from there.
