Layne is my all time favorite vocalist and it can be easy to get picky about covers but then i realize he's my favorite vocalist for a reason. Layne's range on paper is about the same as Corey's but Layne put so much more than natural talent into his songs. To understand why 90s grunge singers are so amazing you have to look at their coaching. The vocal coach that taught people like Layne, Chris cornell and many other legends from that era, focused on spiritual coaching and really digging down deep inside to grab every ounce of emotion that you have so when you open up on high notes it sounds genuine and natural. Corey isn't really struggling with the notes here, he's struggling with the tones that Layne refined specifically for his style. A lot of Layne's power and tone comes from his specific resonance techniques and if you don't use his techniques (no vocalist that has already made their name would) you will never match his power and clarity on the top end of his range. Alice in chains wrote their music around Layne's voice and to even sound decent covering one of their songs, you have to match his tone. But his tone was a mixture of spiritual coaching (confidence), raw emotion and technique that just can't be matched by someone who sings with different meaning and circumstances. Also, let's not forget that nobody is going to be as relaxed as a career heroin addict that was almost always high on stage (just being honest). R.I.P. Layne.

For me it’s more so his annoying annunciation and vowel placement. Layne plays with his vowels and leaves them open so in stead of “Feeeed my eyes” it sounds more like “faaade my eyes” Layne doesn’t hit a hard “e” sound, where as corey hit a very hard “e” sound and leave it very closed. Leading it to sound, well, not good. Not to mention is sounds as if he’s pushing close to the top of his range. Also the weird reverb on the vocals is not favored by me personally. I love corey as a vocalist but this was just not a great performance by him in my opinion and he did not do the song any justice. Not that many people can.

Dave Navarros rendition of that guitar solo is amazing; adds his own personal style flare and the tone he compiled for the song just make it sound even better; and of course Corey Taylor doing his damn best to reach those emotive and passionate Layne tones and notes. Lastly, of course Taylor Hawkins killing it with his special fills and Chaney’s thick and muffled bass lines are the icing on top. Great cover, I just wish Corey could hit those high notes like Layne did.

Navarro's and Taylor's performances were note for note - 10/10. Taylor Hawkins was almost too good/busy, with more fills and flash than the original. Chris Chaney was great. No-one has ever roared like Staley and no-one every will again.

I love Corey and all of his covers. He's got terrific vocals and can nail most of the songs out there. Here, though, on the chorus he sounds like his got a lisp. Tough song to cover from every aspect. AIC with Layne was a force to be reckoned with. Still feel sad when I think about how Layne ended up. I listen to their stuff still to this day and don't feel that time has run over them. Even my kids love them - "Dad, show me Layne when he was healthy and then when he was sad." Makes me wanna cry every fucking time.
