Just an FYI, the Hypno was not in the kit since the Hypno is first gen. We showed the Hypno in the video because it was more visually striking. The kit contained a Blastoise shown further down in the article. We'd be happy to collaborate with you and try some sports, MTG, or other cards. This way you have public record of what is or is not possible. For instance, aren't there signed and packaged baseball cards? We could definitely characterize the indentation of a signature. Someone also suggested trying scratch offs. We did not release this to profit off card readings - this is not our expertise. We do industrial work that our equipment is designed for. We did this just because it was interesting case study and does a good job demonstrating the sensitivity of our equipment. Our equipment is a smidge different than an ebay scanner and produces exceptional data but with the cost to match. The hourly rates to run the equipment wouldn't be worth someone scanning their packs even if we found a very rare card. Similar applications include looking at packaging like contact lenses or consumable pouches for adhesion issues, scanning EV battery cells for foil tears, and so on.

The CT scanners at the VA hospital I go to are 7 figs. So this is what I'm thinking. These guys don't sell the scanners, they sell the SERVICE to have people pay them to scan their packs and boxes. The big money would be in a monopoly, or in this case, duopoly, so they could charge to have people come to them.
@dhuntertodd
@dhuntertodd Ай бұрын
Right. My first thought is cost to implement: anyone who has had a CT scan for medical reasons and dealt with the resulting bill (in America) is familiar with the potentially high costs of such a procedure. Cost would be the limiting reagent in the process. So, perhaps it is worth the cost to run the scanner for the most expensive packs/boxes, but not worth it for others. A scammer would have to determine that break even point themselves.

i’m a pre med student that specialized in analytical chem (a little with Xray machines (XRF)) and at least as a student this is a super awesome application i never considered a lot of this technology is already being used for a wide variety of applications from taking a 3d representation of your teeth to getting a real life 1:1 mclaren into a video game. I do want to say tho u and Aaron are right. I wouldn’t worry about this as an average consumer. These machines are extremely expensive and hard to manage. It isn’t as simple as buying a machine, putting your pack in it and calling it a day. For most of these techniques they require a lot of post processing (we call it denoising) to help create a clear image and separate the difference between different types of card stocks, colors, materials, stuff in the air etc etc. but from a tech enthusiast perspective this is just a really cool and niche application of medical tech.

The investment required to be able to do this almost makes it pointless and you cannot take such in a store and use it. You could buy packs and look for the few good ones, but then you have to resell the ones that you just bought and perhaps take a loss on them. There is also all of the know how required to use one of these things and the software attached to it, so upon reflection, while it seemed ominous at first, this is not really a problem for investors long term unless one can get a CT scanner for may $1,000 and they are readily available to the general public.

In my opinion all this does is introduce a new niche for collectors of graded sealed packs, ie someone may have a full artwork set of Fossil in PSA 10 however now they might say 'Well Gengar is my favourite pokemon so let me see if I can find a full artwork set of Fossil PSA 10 which have a Gengar Holo inside and create a new branch for their collection. Also if these could be used by auction houses and third-party sites then potentially vintage pack scams could decrease significantly. On the other hand for those who want to buy these packs to open them it does largely remove the suspense of not knowing what could be inside your pack, then again a very large majority of these packs are weighed and so the suspense of getting a holo or not would sort of already be removed anyway. Overall I think this has positive implications for collectors and think about that sometime in the fiuture technology may improve so that you have handheld CT scanners and so when a seller in person claims a pack is weighed heavy you can scan the pack there and then to determine whether they are lying to you or not and thus makes it much more tricky to scam people by sending packs that are not 'weighed heavy' even if they are sold as that. One last point would be that the CT scans should allow the actual pack to be imaged in detail and so you should be able to determine whether a pack is re-sealed by whether the original seal and glue are untouched or not which means re-sealing packs should be much more difficult and so much fewer people should be getting scammed with re-sealed packs and even potentiallly booster boxes as well. Really enjoyed your video and keep up the great work.

technically speaking its fraud to do this and resell them. You are selling something with an expectation of people having a fair shot and you are taking that away unbeknownst to them. I have access to a CT scanner which I'm allowed to use after hours. If anyone's from London and wants to tag along, lmk. Gonna try to do this myself.

The technology is fascinating for me and I suppose the technology will not be readily available at all yet so the development should not negatively impact sealed packs too much.

The problem is it defeats the purpose of buying single packs from sellers, except if its maybe from Pokemon Center, as they could just keep the packs with hits for themselves. Sure, they can all start advertising that the packs they sell are unscanned, but how can you even verify they're not? Honestly, this could have a meaningful effect on every TCG, and could even complicate the value of singles, packs, cards, across the entire market. Am I the only one whose worried? My collection could half in value from something like this - everyone's could. Supply plus demand, yes, but if bad actors end up keeping many of the the packs with hits for themselves, it reduces the value of the packs, increases but then ultimately reduces the value of the singles as the packs and the demand as a whole gets compromised... its a weird feedback loop, isn't it?

There's nothing to worry about. First of all, this isn't a standard CT. It's a highly specialized piece of equipment that almost nobody will have access to. Doing a single scan on a single pack of cards would be an extremely laborious process requiring highly technical knowledge. A random person wouldn't be able to do this even if they had access to the scanner. It would also cost thousands upon thousands of dollars in power... and that's for ONE scan. It's completely uneconomical, even for the most expensive vintage packs.
