People need to understand also that if someone goes overboard, not just that ship is affected but all ships in the area are required by maritime law to join in the search. It happened to us a few years ago on our approach to St Thomas. We had the island in sight early one morning, but then the ship started turning away. Everyone was outside trying to figure out what happened, then the captain came on the intercom and annouched we had joined the search for someone missing from another ship. Our ship and that ship did zigzags in the ocean for hours... helicopters circling. Sadly, no one was found, and our ship didn't get released from the search until noon. The majority of excursions got cancelled so people were not happy as we spent half the day at sea just off shore of the island. So this apparent suicide of a crew member (suicide not found in room) from that other ship affected both ships, as well as all the workers on the island who didn't make their money that day.

Makes you wonder if he got kicked off just for the one statement or if a lot more was said by him after they escorted away. Perhaps he made threats to staff or something and the situation escalated to the point they decided to disembark him.

We all go on cruises to have a good time, but within limits. Sadly, no one knows what may have been going on in his personal life, may have been the reason for the excessive drinking. Realizing how high his balance was, he may have thought he wouldn't be able to handle it financially once he was home. Sometimes, we jokingly say what we really mean. I believe that's why the staff have to take the precautions they did. Better to have ruined a vacation for the family vs the family having to plan a funeral.

Boarding a flight from Colorado Springs one time there was a group of three Air Force Academy cadets on my flight. While one of their bags was going through the security x-ray one of them “joked” “There’s a fifty caliber and hand grenades in there.” They were pulled aside and counseled but were later allowed to board. In the waiting area I heard one of them say to the offender “I can’t believe you said that.” I used to think those cadets were supposed to be smart.

There are certianly buz phrases that absolutely tie the hands of staff. I had a coworker who just got a bad headache one time while he was working in the medical dept. He just jokingly said; " My head hurts so bad, if I had a gun I'd just shoot myself." A Dr. overheard what he said, turned right around to the closest phone, right in front of him, and called our Leutenant, telling him what he had said. He was escorted off the unit and advised not to return until he received a clear psych. evaluation. It's kind of like saying the word "B.O.M.B." on an airplane.

WOW, he should have said he was going to report his credit card stolen as a joke and he was home the entire time. Add this to the list of things you can't say in an airport, church, bank, or cruise ship. Reading some of the comments got me thinking. After tending bar for a number of years, it is amazing what people will share when they have been drinking. Who knows what else this person had said that led to that point of "cabin arrest". I think throwing myself overboard was the final straw. The cruise line not doing something may have been a liability if he had indeed taken his life.

An obviously drunk, obviously jesting man was sequestered and escorted off - for his safety - because he made one bad joke. May seem like overkill to him but if he had done something stupid - even if it was just to play on the joke more and just PRETEND like he was going to do it and then fell by accident - the family would have been asking why the crew didn't do more before. On a long cruise, the Front desk crew "DEMANDS" that you surrender your passport to them, so that Customs can have access to passports. Well on this occasion, customs came on board we took our passports to them and everything was fine. Then the crew DEMANDED that we re-surrender our passports to the ship. The ship was in port over night and we wanted to stay at a hotel over night, but you can't check in to the hotel without your passport. The crew did not care and DEMANDED we re-surrender our passports. WE REFUSED. Long story short, we did give them our passports and took a zerox copy to the hotel. The hotel let us check in, but we were so angry with that cruise ship. We wrote all kinds of letters to the ship - after the fact. Now all of this took place on a World Cruise on Holland America about 5 years ago, but we never forgot it. I really think there is a law that you US issued passport is YOUR personal property and they cannot make you surrender it. So now when ships are docked over night in a foreign port, we start contact customer service AT THE TIME OF BOOKING to make sure that this will not be a problem and we get that in writing. If anyone has more information about this - please post. Thanks.

So, as you understand the statement was in a "joking" manner....What if it was not. As you stated he was drinking and "the life of the party"' (not a problem passenger). Could the cruise line be held liable if a death would occur after being disembarked prematurely? Could the cruise line not seek mental help for the passenger? or at least keep them on "watch" until they get back to home port and inform the proper people to get the passenger help. Sadly, suicide is a permanent answer for a temporary situation.
@Meela2342 жыл бұрын
Their liability ended when they put him off the ship. It's a part of the cruise contract all passengers agree to when they book. Staff should not be held responsible to babysit a possibly suicidal passenger until they get back to port. Let his family get him help.

This is exactly why I don’t cruise. It seems the officers running these ships are less than intelligent and are over zealous. Like their security. I will take my all inclusive with free drinks and food. Then I can visit the area at my leisure and not worry if some officer has decided arbitrarily to leave port early, only giving people notice the morning of. Not everyone will get the message when it is dispatched so close to port disembarkation.

Cruise Ship Officers are some of the most intelligent and hard working people in the world. We never have or will disrespect their position as it is well earned. you need to think about the liability the cruise is under for something like that. If the guy did acted on his comment and investigation goes under and it is found out that he mentioned this and no one acted on it, the cruise could be liable for it for ignoring the warning sign a crew member just observed. Its like a guy threatening to kill himself and a cop ignores it and 5 hours later, the person acted on that threat. The cop just made himself liable. They rather lose that family business instead of being on international news and under investigation. Not counting the problems it would of caused during a man over board situation and the cost and trauma that goes along with that for everyone involved.
@philiprice78752 жыл бұрын

Personally, they properly handled that situation very swiftly. When you work in the public, any threat, no matter how it is made, should be taken seriously and remedied quickly for the sake of the other passengers. If this was someone bringing a gun to your kid's school, wouldn't you want officials to act quickly or would you want to talk the gunman down first to check to see where they are at. Any public facility has a "No Tolerance/Zero Tolerance policy!!" Regardless whether you think the misconduct/rule breaking was minor, it had to be dealt with by removing him from his quarters for safety and to have those passengers removed completely. Stop making excuses for people's belligerence in public. Especially, when they've been drinking. We are post 9/11 and post pandemic times, everyone is on high alert!! So of course you can't go around making any kind of threat in public, on a moving vessel where people have thrown themselves off the ship. Kudos to the ship's crew for the swift handling of this passenger!! It is unfortunate for the passenger and his family had to have their vacation cut short. Clearly the amount of money that was spent for him and his family weighed heavily in his mind. If it was too much, why go at all? He could've opted to take a more cost effective vacation for his family that he would've been comfortable with.

Unfortunately, there was no way to know he was not serious. I am a psychiatric registered nurse and I have seen such "casual" remarks turn out very badly. Mental health is nothing to play around with, especially on a cruise ship where he could have ended his life, leaving behind traumatized crew, a wife and kids. I'm so thankful they disembarked him to hopefully get a psych. evaluation.
