Man of Steel was a great movie. Thats coming from someone who is from the Chris Reeves era and think he will always be the greatest "Superman". This was the same story told in a new and colorful way with a very space aged fantasy back drop. I give it a 9.5/10. I am confused on why it got negative reviews.

I think Man of Steel is some of the most misunderstood movies in recent years. Of course it has flaws but movies are never perfect. There is no such thing as a perfect movie. Pick the best movie in the world and there's probably a good amount of people that hate it. However, some of the hate towards Man of Steel is just ridiculous. There is a lot of people hating on this movie just because the Superman in the movie wasn't the perfect hero that could save everyone. That's the whole point. Superman barely knows how to use his powers and he's still learning how to be a hero. For people that hate the fact that Superman couldn't save all the people dying in Metropolis, Superman can't save everyone or else it would feel really unrealistic on top of the fact that there is a super powered alien flying around. I kind of thought the hatred against Superman not being able to save everyone is kind of like yelling at a doctor for saving everyone's lives. Doctors can save people but it doesn't guarantee that everyone will live. In the case of Superman, kind of the same thing applies, Superman can save people but it doesn't mean he can go around saving everyone and fight Zod and his army at the same time. He couldn't bring the fight somewhere else because Zod and his army were based in Metropolis. For the killing Zod thing, Zod didn't give Superman a choice. Zod was committed to killing everyone on Earth unless Superman killed him. Also, if Superman managed to stop Zod from killing the family, what would they do with Zod then. I'm sure the Phantom Zone idea couldn't be done again because they already used the pod. If people hate the movie then fine whatever as long as they have really good legitimate criticism for hating on it. Hating on Man of Steel just because Superman didn't save everyone and killed Zod is unfair towards the movie. All the criticism on Man of Steel's pacing, its plot, acting, and character development are valid. I understand and to a certain point I kind of agree. Man of Steel despite its flaws is still a great movie and possibly the best reboot that could happened for Superman.

The problem of the movie is "stuff happens, people are there". The scenes are not actually interconnected in any meaningful way with characters randomly filling some part in them even if they shouldn't be there because there is no reason to. For any storytelling medium that is a problem. Sadly that's the new way to write movie scripts just look at Star trek...

David Blandy My problem is that you don't understand the Superman mythos or didn't pay attention the the theme of the movie. He had NO choice. Zod was NOT going to stop fighting. This isn't the first time Superman killed Zod, he does it in the Reeves movie too by taking his powers away and then dropping him in a hole. He's done it in the comics several times too. Superman does kill (albeit very, very rarely) but only in the most extreme of situations. I honestly think Snyder did a good thing by doing this. It sets up for Faora's return and can be used as a plot point in the foundation of Superman's "no killing" rule because now he's done it.

David Blandy I don't think superman could just be like, "I'm gonna kill zod" and zod would just let it happen.

I'm a little late to this channel, but better late than never. This is the best review of this movie I've seen. I agree with everything you said. It blew my mind when people were actually saying this movie had too much action! I loved the action in this movie. I did not want to see another Superman movie were all he does is blow out forest fires and stop runaway trains. And him killing Zod at the end made sense. The result of that, is the reason why he will never kill another living being. Thus, this is part of his "character development".

In regard to batman v superman, my advice to Warner bros would be, Don't panic! Just make sure you have a good plan for the next movies. Don't scrap them! You have a good superman, you have a good batman, you just need to make sure you have good stories for them to be in. I like Affleck and Cavil. They can pull it off with good stories and good direction!

Things people need to remember about this movie: 1) it's beautifully shot and realized for screen. it's a far more stunning film than anything else we've seen in the superhero genre so far. 2) Henry Cavill was an awesome superman, he totally captured the small town, earnest vibe that Clark needs. He just wasn't given much to do with this script, but that will change with BvS. 3) the destruction that ensued is an accurate depiction of what would actually happen if an inexperienced superman started fighting an army of trained kryptonian warriors who have no regard for human life. He scrapes through by the skin of his teeth the whole fight, the only reason he holds his own at all at first is because he's the only one who can fly, then when zod learns how he gets the shit kicked out of him. 4) the destruction and massive loss of human life in this movie are going to be addressed in BvS, it's the whole reason that Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor are coming into the picture at all. they want to stop him because they think he's dangerous. So it's actually not like a lot of superhero films where they never address the destruction caused by these heroes, it's actually going to be pivotal to the story. 5) Superman killing Zod will prove to be essential to who he is as a person. Everyone knows that superman and batman don't kill, that's why people were upset when Clark did in this movie. But think about it. Batman's reason for not killing is because he watched his parents get murdered in front of him when he was a child. Superman at the beginning of his story here has no reason for not killing his enemies. Yeah, his home planet was destroyed, but he didn't even know krypton existed until he was 32. To him, his home planet is earth. He has no real emotional connection to krypton other than a cultural one. And even that connection has only been recently fostered. He has no first hand trauma from the death of krypton. But what he does have emotional trauma to, having to slaughter the only other remaining person of his species with his bare hands in order to save the species that raised him. THAT is enough of a reason for him to never kill again, and Cavill's reaction shot in that moment is one of his best acting moments in the film. So please everyone, stop hating on this truly great film and start appreciating the things that it did right. Because it did quite a few things, REALLY right.

i think the only problems i had with this movie were how he found the scout ship. He was just randomly at Antarctica for no reason and he just walked into the cave where there was a giant alien spaceship, the other problem was how he let his dad died, he could've totally saved him. I also didn't like the relationship between Clark and Lois Other than that 9/10 love this movie

People seem to forget that Clark hasn't been Superman very long at all. His first public outting had him duking it out with people on his level or close to it. He'd never been in that intense of a situation before, so of course there's going to be a bit of collateral damage. I'm sure we'll see less of that in BvS and the eventual MoS2 (not the JLA movie though, that'll be over the top again). It was a dark time for Superman. He was forced to step out before he probably wanted to. He even says at the end "I want to help, but it has to be on my terms."

Here here, this fella gets it. You're not going to be using a level of power that could literally break the planet for the first time at length in your life, after being told all your life never to use it, and be a master. In fact, simply breaking a town in a fit of frustration could be chocked up to an honest mistake at that horsepower. And as you said, he was being forced to use all of it to battle beings on his level who fully intended to lay waste to civilization as we know it. Because, you know, it's so very easy to juggle not accidentally missing your swing and sending a quake through the earth that'll kill dozens while simultaneously fighting a guy who intends to do a good hundred times that on *purpose*.

Besides the fact that these superheroes come together for the first time I can't think of anything good in this film. It has the most generic plot I've ever seen, action on the Transformers level, idiotic jokes, even the villain is a joke, the acting is bleh and the characters are non-existent (out of place forced tension between Iron Man and Cap, zombie Hawkeye, etc.).

I love your review. People too fucking stupid. For years superman has had an overly simple story. No explanation about his planet is given. All superman villians have always been evil FOR NO APPARENT REASON. Now that they FINALLY give an explanation about superman' s planet and the motivation behind Zod; people complain that the movie is too Sci- Fi. Fuck the critics. All the director did was ADD SOME BRAINS to a franchise that has always been overly simple in its story telling "hero is good because he is good, and villian is evil because he is the villian"

As a pretty big Superman fan, I was surprised at how much I loved the fresh take on the Superman story that this movie presented us with. I give Man Of Steel a 9/10 it was an incredible origin story for a really great character. I see why that this movie is not very hopeful. Its because if there was a real superman this is what would happen. If there were beings that were that powerful a lot of people will die. Unlike in the avengers no one gave a shit when new york was destroyed. I don't think zod could have said "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD" because he wasn't trying to rule the world or even krypton. All he wanted was the survival of his people. I absolutely loved Zod in this movie because he was so into it, like he looks as superman as the bad guy and he believes that he is doing the right thing. With Justice League I really want Flash to be played by Chris Pine. I'm also good with the Justice League only having Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and The Flash. I also want their sidekicks come out in their individual movies so that maybe we could also have a teen titans movie or something :) Great review well explained my man!

The moment where Superman is leaping like the Hulk was a bit corny, but it was needed, two reasons, one if he were to fly right away people would than complain about how quickly he learned(like how the Power Rangers from back in the day seemed to know how to control the Zords right away)and 2 it was a wink to the origin, in the original comics all Superman did was leap, that'd where the "Leap tall buildings in a single bound" came from, even the fact that we don't get Jimmy Olsen or Kryptonite is another wink as those two pieces of the myth also came later. I love this film and felt that it was just as good if not better than Superman 1 & 2. It gave us the Man of Steel that has only been seen in animation and comics and not some love sick cat saving stalker type.

In my opinion, John, your review of this film is one of the best, not simply because I agree with it, but because I can tell you really analyzed the film as opposed to simply going by feelings and listing what didn't "feel" right to you as flaws. One of your best points in my opinion is that even though we didn't see much of Supes saving civilians in Metropolis, he had an ENTIRE PLANET to save! Metropolis is just one city! Superman really had his hands full in this (plus he had just started).

If u ask me, I think that this movie is the best superhero movie of all time, mainly due to the fact that it only presented footage which was necessary. There were no scenes in the movie where I was like “that was pointless”. It’s just pure epicness, and straight to the point. Additionally, there are so many allegories in the movie, that I was blown away. So motivational. For me, it’s up there with 300 in terms of motivation. I mean, one man does anything he can to save humanity. That is pretty inspirational. I don’t care what people say, this was the first superman to truly give me hope. It is not about the external factor, but the internal elements.

cont. Also, I loved that the stakes were so high because (like you said) the fact that Superman saved the world will really inspire those who survived the crisis and elevate Superman to that true "hero" status. Also, I agree with you that Clark Kent had plenty enough character development from the flashbacks. I even agree in that I didn't like that Pa Kent died saving a dog, but I still liked what the scene overall was about (plus I know some people would die saving a dog, lol).

I liked your video, you made good points explaining about Man of Steel. About the Batman Reboot that's still untitled film that has yet to be name, but thoughts are I hope to see a Superman/Batman World's Finest movie would be amazing. I heard Warner Bros or whoever is working on JL movie, but I think the director needs to choose wisely for the rest of the Justice League film. Wow, you have given the best review to this movie I've seen. The truth is that this is the Superman movie I've always wanted to see. What more can people really ask for. My concern is that if people keep complaining, the vision of what this Man of Steel will be changed to please those "haters!" I urge you to get together with the schmoes know, Jeremy Jans, Chris Stukman and others you may know, and take a stand!! Don't let them take this version of our Superman away!

Agreed. I was at least kept entertained by Spiderman 3, instead of questioning why some characters were even there (Lois). I love the character of Lois Lane and like Amy Adams, but I get the feeling she was only there because Lois Lane had to be in the movie, which left me puzzled then irritated. And she didn't really seem like Lois to me (which I guess goes back to that character development issue). Then there was also the issue of Clark's parents. I didn't really like how either were handled. But this may be because I'm a big fan of Smallville and Lois & Clark.

I don't get why people keep bringing up the destruction in this movie. It became pretty clearly to me that most of the destruction that took place was from the doomsday machine thingy, and NOT from Superman and Zod duking it out. In fact, Superman doesn't even fight Zod in Metropolis until there's already a massive crater in the middle of Metropolis. I don't get that complaint. And Superman has killed before in the comics, and surprisingly enough, Zod was one of the people he killed. People need to stop bringing this up in regards to the movie, saying that "Superman wouldn't do that!" because Superman HAS already done it.

Yes, Yes, Yes. I was nodding my head during most of this. Around 7:00 you were talking about character development, I agree. That scene were he was working in the bar, and that guy dumps his beer. PERFECTION. I also really liked the scene were his Dad (Costner) dies. PERFECTION PLUS. And I can't see why people say his character is "dull, and boring". Anyone who has sympathy can relate to him! In some ways the sympathy thing reminded me of Bridge to Terabithia.

Superman's doing "leaps like the Hulk" is a reference to Superman's early adventures (1930's to 1940's) when he was able to leap tall buildings in a single bound-the ability to fly came later. This was also the first representation of Superman where it is acknowledged that the character was created by Canadians Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel. I interpret Kal El's first appearance as an adult in the movie, which takes place in Canada,as a tribute to his creators.

Did you all notice how when superman was lying on the table in the Kryptonian ship after the dream, Zod was standing next to him telling him he'd do whatever he had to to save his people? Well how ironic was it that superman's highest rule, no killing, was broken to *save his people*? In my opinion, clark/kal-el/superman turns into Zod (in a way). If this is not explored more in a sequel, I will be kind of upset. One of the biggest reasons superman wears the symbol on his chest is because he believes in hope - for all sentient beings - that should include Zod. This needs to be addressed in future movies.
@SymbiSpidey

Idk, Zod's situation was pretty different. Zod planned on killing Earth because he COULD. To him, earthlings were no different than ants are to us. Superman, however, killed Zod because he had to. A family was about to be vaporized right before his eyes. Superman didn't see himself as necessarily superior to Zod in the way that Zod himself carried that elitism with him. Zod's critical character trait was that he had such a massive superiority complex that he always believed that his decisions were right. Superman even after killing Zod realizes that it wasn't necessarily the right thing to do, but his hands were figuratively tied and he wasn't given much option.

Okay, I think that Bruise Wayne should make a cameo appearance in a sequel Superman movie. Batman and Superman have this interesting bond together, where one hides in the shadows, and the other in the sunlight. And although they do not always get along, they often team up together and their own dynamic duo...so to speak. The next movie should also have either lex luthor or Bizzaro...or both! They make great villains.

Post 4: Finally, I felt that the overtones of both of Clark's fathers are something I go back and forth on. Clark's relationship with Jonathan Kent is deep and moving, but I feel like Clark's development is shadowed by his grief for the loss of his earthly father. Meanwhile, he suddenly and openly accepts Jor El, a man he's never known or seen before, as his father so easily. However, both actors are splendid, and both characters really help shape the Man of Steel into who he is now.

Character development isn´t just flashbacks, long talks about parents and childhood, big speeches of why I do what I do or the principles I have or the things I´ve learn, isn´t about discussions where I´m trying to convince you of something or plot expositions... Character development is a show of the sense of humor, what would you do projections, "I-hang with-you-because...kind of delivery", live something that makes you sad, "what-do-you-say-or-think-of-t his... type of questions" and more.

Btw, I feel the same way about the rating. Maybe nowadays people has lost their passion for enjoying the movie, instead they try to find bad things about a movie, everyone trying to review without proper knowledge N honesty, only to show that they are clever, even when they enjoying the movie.

I agree wholeheartedly. Ppl just want something to bitch about nowadays. I feel like ppl spend so much time over thinking and picking movies apart, that they forget to have fun. I never hear ppl bitch about destruction and ppl dying in other types of movies. And you might say, Superman would never do that or let that happen. When I have seen many supermen who would do that and much worse. This is the comic directly adapted to the screen, this is the DC extended universe. So it's just another earth in the multiverse. Ppl say he'd never allow that, but how do they know?? This is their first time seeing this Superman.

firstly, great work with the ideas over the videos man,.but gotta tell that i just loved the movie to the core,it was so well screened..clark was a man who didnt knew he is gonna be a superman or a saviour..he just planned to grow old like other humans & blend in..nd when he finds himself in trouble due to zod.. he with no skills of a soldier or a fighter like those zod pursue..just fights to stop him..nd when two powerful forces clashes...there is gonna be a damage to things near .. .

Of course there was, as I said it was an important plot point. That doesn't make it logical or well made. I think it was a cheap way to induce the appropriate behavior of Clark for the rest of the movie. They did the similar thing in the original movie, but it made much more sense.

also, as for the points you talked about 1: i do think there was a little too much action. 2: the time on krypton was needed, and awesome. 3: is that even a serious critique? 4: they just met, they're not in love. that comes in sequels. 5: zod was meant to be understood, not menacing. it gave superman moral dilemma. 6: this is the reason i think there was too much action. 7: i thought there was enough character development 8: im neutral about the consciousness on the ship.

The only problem I had with the end was that I personally thought that there was no point to have the World Engine and Zod's ship be separate. The scene could've worked just as well if the two had been one and the same. I understand that they did that so that the human characters could fight the Kryptonians and open the Phantom Zone without Superman interfering, but the whole sequence paled since it came between the two best fights in the movie (The Smallville brawl and Superman vs Zod)

That's cool man, my major gripes with Wolverine were that he was scared of flying and that he didn't speak Japanese. Maybe I was spoiled with Lost in Translation here but I also felt they didn't do enough with the Japan location considering it was actually shot there, still found it to be quite immersive though. With that said the world would be a dull place if everyone agreed on everything. Hope X-Men: Days of Future past is better for you :)

That I will agree with... I think this may be due to Warner Bros. push to still get a Justice League movie out by 2015, in order to compete with the onslaught of Marvel films. They have already fast tracked Man of Steel 2 for 2014!!! Hopefully they actually do take the time to re-introduce characters and make this a worthwhile universe that we will enjoy watching.

...Regarding the overall damage of Metropolis, if that's going to happen in each movie, they're going to have to be set like 15 years apart. How was the Planet still standing after the destruction for Clark to just waltz into what would be a highly sought after position? Zod was too weak, he's meant to have Supe's abilities with military training too, yet he's beaten by Jor El (Scientist) and Clark (Farm Boy). I love the way Clark felt the need to shave after getting his costume too (cont)

I *did* like that she was investigating the reports of a super human living amongst us. That aspect was brilliant, and if they would've followed through with that idea for the first movie and, as we've said, saved Zod for film 2, this would've been a far stronger film.
