They are absolutely intolerant of anybody with any differences, and will gladly turn their backs on the one who is drowning, just because they don't happen to like them. Nonhuman. You walk with them (split into groups if need be), encourage them, motivate them to finish, and you complete the challenge as a unit and a team. Everything is off about this story - leaving him, not stopping and waiting/going back for him, removing markers they knew he needed (WTF?!), not calling for help until about 5 hours after a major storm rolled in, when a struggling/inexperienced hiker was on the mountain... When we got near the top, the weather changed and became wintery and snowy, without sny discussion abruptly everyone separated and went at different speeds, with the guy who was leading racing on ahead. Around that time one girl without much experience said she was getting very tired and cold and the group 'leader' said to just wait alone behind a rock in an isolated place until everyone else was done. You NEVER EVER abandon them on the trail. There are many dangers on the trails especially in the Rockies. My group would always be “packing” and carrying flare guns, compass for azimuth directions, etc. These guys are either a bunch of pilgrims who know little about hiking in the wilderness or they did this hike purposely losing him to teach him a lesson. Wow. When temperatures drop quickly, without proper shelter or clothing, a person can die from hypothermia. Also, since the poor man fell several times, he could have perished if he hit his head hard enough. How the hell could his coworkers just abandon him there? And then not report it to authorities for another 5 hours!! This is not the same situation, but many years ago I went hiking up Grouse Mountain with several woman. I had been working with one of the women for a few weeks, and the others were all strangers. About half way up, I realized I didn't have the cardio to continue and told them I was heading back down. One of the women - a stranger to me - encouraged me to carry on. She slowed her pace down considerably, took a break whenever I needed one, and hiked the entire way with me. That was more than 30 years ago, and I still remember her kindness. Isn't it crazy that a stranger would do that for me, and yet none of this man's coworkers bothered to stay behind and help him.

Every single co-worker should be utterly aghast at themselves. I too have been part of a “team building” event in which one person (out of 20) was having difficulty on the hike. Several “team mates” didn’t care at all and just went ahead. Several more were simply ignorant and just went ahead. A small handful, including myself, refused to leave the woman having trouble. We Got her to the top and then, together, made our way down. Human decency. Utter nonsense that the entire group simply left someone on that mountain. Total lack of human compassion and emotional intelligence. I truly hope that they don’t find themselves in that situation one day but if they do, perhaps they will come to understand just how horrific their actions were on that 14’er.

So you are on a teambuilding exercise. So someone was in charge. The person in charge should’ve not let this happen. The person in charge should have made sure the police were notified. It’s why we have bosses. They’re supposed to take care of things. If this is a teambuilding exercise, the only thing they learned is their boss is completely inept.

Why should they have had to put themselves in further danger by waiting on him? I've read a few books on Mt. Everest recently and there have been many times in history when someone made in heartbreakingly close to the summit but had to turn around. It sucks but sometimes you just have to face the fact that summiting is not going to happen and turn around and go down with the rest of the group. He could have saved himself, his coworkers and rescuers a lot of trouble if he had just used good common sense.
