What's up guys! :) This is a book that I could never do justice with a video. I didn't even feel right calling this a "review." I took my favorite ideas and animated them, but this should be required reading if you like the channel. :) It is an absolutely amazing book, and Viktor's story is unbelievable. Anyway, hope you enjoy the video! :) Get the book: amzn.to/1obtniX

FightMediocrity Hello, i really enjoy your videos and im glad your living a beautiful life. I sense that you got a little choked up in the end on what you went threw and i admire how you look at life and respond with a positive view:) I was weak in retrospect and blamed things on my father but in reality my mother was 3 times greater:) Im still learning things so again thanks for your knowledge and im surely going to check out the book. I have a question for you, Jim Rohn had said and i quote' You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with'. What do you think about this because we all need great people around us to grow. Maybe you can make a video on this subject when you get a chance, ill be surely interested in it. Have a great day and keep up the great work my friend.

grcanbo Haha, yeah, I kept getting really emotional while recording this. In regards to friends, I have to agree. The funny thing is you might be in a situation where there are no "right" people around you. I know I've been there many times, and my "5" people had to be people on the internet I looked up to or an author or someone I had never met. Definitely a great topic, maybe I'll discuss it more at some point. And thanks for the support! :)

"The Pursuit of Happiness" is not about "how you will be happy when you are a stockbroker", like you present it here. It is about the harsh journey he goes through which transforms into the man he becomes, for his kid, and for his own life. Barring that point, you are a great soul for making these awesome videos and teaching thousands, if not millions, new ideas, new alternate perspectives every day. Thank You.

It's cool that you create such podcasts which push people to think more, think about their own lifes..analyse it and finally change it! And actually sometimes when i think about something i begin laugh....because it seems obveosly....but i just did not think about this before. Thank you for doing a great job!

Victor Frankl quote during his life in Nazi concentration camp: Most important, do the prisoners' reactions to the singular world of the concentration camp prove that man cannot escape the influences of his surroundings? Does man have no choice of action in the face of such circumstances? We can answer these questions from experience as well as on principle. The experiences of camp life show that man does have a choice of action. There were enough examples, often of a heroic nature, which proved that apathy could be overcome, irritability suppressed. Man can preserve a vestige of spiritual freedom, of independence of mind, even in such terrible conditions of psychic and physical stress. We who lived, in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.

He simply presents it in the first minute as the exact opposite of Man's Search for Meaning in terms of the values and message. Everything else is about Man's Search for Meaning, and the ideas from there applied to his personal context. What he talks about is mentioned in the preface of the book, in the first 4 or 5 pages I think you guys kinda missed the point
@AFlagRules
@AFlagRules 5 жыл бұрын
He uses the example of the movie 'The Pursuit of Happ(i)ness' to illustrate the point that happiness isn't something you pursue (trying to become a broker and then getting there and one day poof I'm happy). He mentions in the video that perhaps this is hollywoods 'idea' of happiness but Victor Frankl in 'Man's search for meaning' says something along the lines of happiness is something that you are, regardless of what you have. You're either happy on the bus and in the Ferrari, or you're unhappy on the bus AND unhappy in the Ferrari. The Ferrari only gives you the opportunity to experience more, but it does not give you 'happiness'. Big Idea # 1 @1:50 in the video Also in the book 'Man's search for meaning' is the idea that when an event occurs that seems bad, like dropping brand new expensive plates on the floor, most people will react in a pissed off manner - but that event isn't 'negative' or 'bad' in itself, because one could also react in a gracious manner by looking at it as an opportunity to practice gratitude, perhaps for even having the ability to buy these in the first place and to not be so damn clumsy next time, because it's bound to happen again or come close to happening again. Big Idea #2 @5:30 in the video Though in your defense, he doesn't explicitly say the title of the book he's doing the video on (from my recollection) and he does boldly mention 'The Pursuit of Happ(i)ness' in the beginning.

It is to have the hability to see and apreciate all the blesings in our life, enjoying the process of our goals regarless of the hard times, finding a teaching and something positive in everything. We don't need to wait until we reach something to feel good, we can decide to apreciate what we already have. "There's no way most people are going to have the same work ethic as me. Most people don't know what it's likek to be 7 and out on the street collecting dirty bottles, so you can feed yourself. And I'm so thankful for every bullshit experience I've had, and I wouldn't change a single thing if I could. " Wooow hahah that gave me goosebumps man. I didn't have such a bad start as you (even though I come from a third world country -- and yes, I know this nomenclature is obsolete), but I've suffered a lot "Psychological/Emotional Warfare" as a kid, which gave me all sorts of annoying issues. I'm pushing my way out out of a severe apathy/mild depression combo (self-diagnosed with 5 real tests which I remade 5 times each out of disbelief), and even though I knew all things you said on this video, I couldn't help but see where I'm headed. I really identified with this you said. Since I'm anti-drug unless on suicide contemplation/attempt situations, I've been searching for my own answers and "fixes" from psychology, spirituality, self-help, etc, for the last two years But only philosophy really broke the big, bad chains, and it happened this week. So I bumped into your channel on the perfect time to get some insights, overviews and reviews on good books and ideas. I instantly subscribed and already recommended the channel for a bunch of friends. More of this stuff should be made and watched on KZbin, not only freaking funny cat videos. I really like your videos and interpretations but I would have disagree with your comments on the movie "pursuit of happyness" . No matter how abstract the concept of the happiness maybe, reality always kicks in . In this context the "happyness" isn't about being a stockbroker , the happiness stems from the fact being a stockbroker he is able to provide for this son , pay his bills, buy him food and give him a comfortable bed to sleep in. He is actually an optimistic individual who brought a lot of bone density scanners in the hopes of doing good business. The story in in fact based on Chris Gardner's life who did it in reality . It's truly an amazing and inspiring story. Now imagine if you didn't have to collect the bottles for the 20 Tetri , what if you could have one more if you wanted with the extra money ? wouldn't you be happier ?

"There's nothing wrong with improving your life and wanting to experience more" that's right, but that is also what the movie you mentioned at the begin is about. Happiness is not of course being a stockbroker, happiness is achieving your goal after all that struggle he went through. The movie is not saying "oh yeah as soon as it got the job his life got better and he'd live happily ever after" that's not what the movie is about, guess you missed the whole point. A part from that, I agree with the rest of the video and your channel is still great :) it's amazing to see the growing number of subscribers!

+iemandmusic I thought the same. Getting that job meant he could establish structure and stability in his life and in his sons life. Being able to provide for himself and his child leads to self respect. Not having to live in subway stations reduced his insane stress levels. THAT's what brought him happiness. The message of the movie was very valid. Having said that, I also agree the rest of the video and this channel is great.

Hey FightMediocrity ! I remember following your channel when you had less than 2,000 subscribers, and you inspired me back then into reading more books and faster. I want to thank you for that! It's changed my life, but most important, it changed my mindset. I want to ask you if I can use the piano music you have as background music in my own videos (haven't started filming yet). I want your permission before I go through with this ASAP and will post this same request in a couple more of your videos + your inbox. Why? Because I know you're a busy guy, and even if you want to, it's impossible catch every request you get in a day. I'd like to add: you're inspiring not only our generation and the next but even the previous generations before us with the content you've shared with us for free. I cannot thank you enough. I hope to meet one day and share a drink together. (Roiboos Tea is my preferred beverage btw). Wish you all the best - Sam

I think the real problem for a lot of first world children is the fact that they have nothing in their lives to compare their misfortunes with. I think this is unfortunate. We immigrants from poorer nations have a big contrast in our experiences. The big big solution is in documenting the issues in these other areas for everyone to see, or to travel to other countries to experience them. :) Education means a lot.

You had the right intention but the wrong idea. You are promoting that people should deny themselves of circumstantial negative emotions. That’s dangerous! Let’s take your broken plates scenario. It’s perfectly healthy to be pissed off about breaking brand new plates, even to curse at the situation. You need to vent and ride that negative emotion all the way out; it’s like breathing. If you deprive yourself of that then you bottle up anger which is terrible for your health, both physical and mental. An approach more in sync with our human nature would be to allow yourself to express your negative emotions in order to get it out of your system and thus restore your calmness within. This is indeed why it feels so good to vent with our friends about shitty situations, to pummel a punching bag when thinking about your boss, to remove yourself from an ever-growing difficult situation and run to an empty field and scream as loud as you can. After doing those things, and other similar ones, it’s a lot easier to regain clarity, to see things for what they really are. The soothing relief makes room for silverlining and indeed a reflective period in which one can learn from mistakes and see the positive things that can arise from those situations.

I believe you're right on this. This is a bad example, but I live in China. Traffic here is amazingly inconsiderate and dangerous for many reasons. I can choose to be angry at some fool deciding not wait the extra 2 seconds to let me ride my bike by and cut me off or simply shrug it off. Now, both scenarios have happened when I reacted with a shrug and always with a simple smack of their car with my hand. When I've reacted with the acknowledgement that they have done me and I'm sure so many others a disservice for cutting us off nearly causing an accident by simply slapping their car, I feel quite relieved and somewhat satisfied that perhaps I made them more aware of the people around them. Perhaps I was being childish, but the feeling of vindication is there and I hurt no one. I've also been able to brush off the horrible driving with a shrug and some breathing, but that one takes a bit more time. I work on both. When I lived in Minneapolis, I pulled up to a neighborhood intersection and I stopped in the pedestrian walkway. A guy started bouncing his basketball off my car letting me know of my inconsideration and, though I was annoyed at first, I immediately understood and backed up with apology. The situation calls for an inner reaction either way, can you perhaps tap someones shoulder and give your opinion that they might be in the wrong? Yea.

I agree. He is also the exception rather than the norm. There are certain things human beings are not suppose to endure and if people begin to openly admit those as normal then we lose our humanity.

Thats fine but you wont grow a lot or learn much. A good example is a kid being denied playing video games because they didn't do their chores. They flip out and throw things, then they get seriously punished, lose what they originally wanted and even more. People can choose not to learn anything, blame soneone else and become even more bitter. Emotion doesn't make them right or clarify anything by expressing it. Sometimes the behaviour gets worse when emotional reactions are validated or seen as healthy. The idea in Frankl's book is about not seeing yourself as a victim but taking on your sufferung and learning from it so you arent blinded by emotion but instead laern how you perceive the meaning of your emotion in regards to yourself. Either things are happening to you or you are coming into the difficulty with IT from yourself.

You are so dumb and stupid because this is exactly what a school shooter mentality is all about. In psychology it is considered that an abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal. If you think that allowing yourself to be controlled by your own emotion and react accordingly to it just to "rEstOre yoUr cAlmNess" then you are no different to an animal. as Victor Frankl quote during his life in Nazi concentration camp: Most important, do the prisoners' reactions to the singular world of the concentration camp prove that man cannot escape the influences of his surroundings?

I love the plate analogy. We hear about the crazy person on the news who murders his wife over ordering take-out or some stupid shit. Lets decide to do the opposite, and make the choice to perceive things in a positive, constructive manner. Drop your phone in the toilet? Let that be your motivation for being as successful, and making the most positive difference you can! xD Dont let life live you. You live your life, and decide to respond in a better way.

hey, your work is awesome and I love your work but that part about THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS was very disturbing. The idea in the movie wasn't that Chris Gardener lived happily ever after, the idea was totally different. And that wasn't hollywood's idea , the whole movie was based on a man's life story.

Whilst there are two ideas from Frankl's book, this is not an animation of 'Man's search for meaning'. The author's name is never mentioned, and the anecdotes given are shallow and way off the mark. It seemed important for you to mention that the quality of your life would be 100 times better and that this wasn't going to make you happy. Then why are you on that path? I don't think you actually buy in to or have tried to understand Frankl's ideas. (He suffered through the holocaust, you instead choose to talk about breaking plates and eating steak!)

long long time ago? damn bro it's not that old lol the the guy worked hard. achieved a goal. and he became a millionaire. you get put in his situation and see if you're not stressed all the time. he worked through all that stress and anger. he was the epitome of hard work. you're telling me you'd happy if you had to sleep in a bathroom with your son that now doesn't have his mother in his life. I like your video tho but what you said about the movie I don't agree

its a remake .. it is a very old movie. and he is basically saying you will never find happiness especially being anger worried stressed to get there. you might but a very long long time.. good luck. its not about the end result , its about the journey. you can never get it done(end result) bc wants you get to the end result you'll set forth new desires you had no clue you'd ever want from the experiences of this journey. we are meant to create and we are always in transition. There is no one thing that will make you forever happy. "theres no way to happiness , happiness is the way" - Buddha . its the journey
