@TrangleC3 жыл бұрын
I realized at that moment that the movie is really dumb. Why would they replace the mines with cans? That makes no sense, outside of that the movie plot needed something the main character could step on and mistake for a mine. And the fact that the movie is trying to sell that "native" guy as wise, is jabbering nonsense. "You need to move on and take the next step." definitely is not wisdom for someone who stands on a landmine. That it turns out that it wasn't a landmine, but a can which he and his daughter put there for shits and giggles, doesn't make it better. Besides, I would not take advise from a guy who lets his daughter play with landmines.

If you are just going to mark stuff, why remove the mines at all, why not mark the mines by putting a can on top of them? Or even if you have to stick to this stupid system where you dig out the mines and leave a can in its place for some nonsensical reason, then you could at least put the can high enough, so the sand doesn't cover it, instead of burring it, for crying out loud. All putting cans where you removed mines would do would be to make it harder to find the remaining mines and like in this case, confuse and scare people who don't know what you were doing. Besides, it seems as if the kid was doing it alone, right? In that case her father wouldn't know what is mine and what is can either, if he steps on one.

Well just in case any of you blokes find yourself in this situation, know that mines don't work like that, once it detects a certain amount of weight, it just explodes, whether the target is there or not doesn't matter. And its highly unlikely but if you hear a click like that, its probably a delayed mine, they wait a few seconds before going off, in that case staying further on it is the last thing you should do. Either way, I'm honestly glad it was just a can, so no fundamental inaccuracy, marines usually know how mines work, but that could be left for cognitive bias.

The movie trope that you hear a click before a land mine goes off is a fallacy. They seem to imply that when you step on a mine, it doesn't explode until you lift your foot off. I can't speak for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that are hand made because they would work the way their builder intended. But all mines of which I am aware, which are built in factories, go off as soon as you apply pressure. Some are designed to be triggered by vehicles, and a person stepping on them won't set them off. But there are plenty that are designed to be triggered by just a hundred or more pounds of pressure, so a footstep would definitely do it.

Another expert who know nothing about the topic. There are plenty of situations where a pressure release device could be used. An example would be placing a pressure release mine under an anti personnel mine. When the anti personnel mine is removed the pressure release mine explodes. This has been used thousands of times. You could also place a pressure release device under something like a crate of chocolate... or a corpse. You get the idea. If this was you in real life and you heard a click.... I guarantee you wouldn't move. This movie checks out. You may continue your Taco Bell career now.

I was a combat engineer, there are some land mines that take two steps to be activated, that way when there’s a formation of soldiers it’ll hit them center mass. There’s also wooden mines, wooden so you wouldn’t detect it with a metal detector. Realistically there wouldn’t be a man landline there, there would be a vehicle mine in that terrain. "There is a common misperception that a landmine is armed by stepping on it and only triggered by stepping off, providing tension in movies. The detonate on release of pressure is something I think came out of a film about the post Yugoslavia wars in the Balkans, where local reproductions of German WWII "jumping" mines were used. These were basically a trigger and spring with a short fuse fragmentation grenade, where the initial pressure unlocked the mechanism, and a spring launched a grenade up once the foot was removed, where the fuse was adjusted in order to air burst the grenade at head level. Needless to say, this design is much harder to survive than a typical antipersonnel mine, which detonates on the first step, and which is usually designed to amputate a leg, as wounded men are a greater hindrance to resources than dead ones. Can't exactly just slap a tourniquet on if an airburst grenade removes your head, peppers your torso with shrapnel, and turns your organs into smuckers via 5 meter pressure wave kill radius.

Not a subject matter expert, but my understanding is that this notion that mines explode after you step off of them is a myth. It comes from the behavior of the Bouncing Betty which was designed to launch itself into the air in order to explode at about waist-level. So, because it had to jump up in the air, people concluded that you have to release the trigger to trigger the mine. In actuality, the mine was triggered immediately by stepping on it, and the launch was effected by a time delay, rather than from stepping off the mine. If you think about it, doesn't make any sense to wait until the pressure is released, and even less so for a non-jumping mine.

I've seen this movie multiple times and that didn't happen nor the narrator of this video ever said he got a signal. He took out his phone and look at the pictures and found a video from his girlfriend. You don't need signal to check your gallery.
