Man the Fort! British Regular Troops Train at Kelly Station for the War of 1812 | Frontier History

Join us for an action-packed day at Kelly Station as we welcome the 49th Regiment of Foot and the Glengarry Light Infantry for their spring training. Watch as we engage in historic live fire drills, with muskets shooting at targets, and showcase traditional blacksmithing techniques. We start the day with Peter's friend Charlie - on a successful turkey hunt to prepare a feast for our guests, ensuring no part of nature goes to waste. He also fires up the forge for the soldiers to make tent pegs. Joanne makes the meals, and cards the wool. Susanne, spins the wool, in preparation for making socks for the troops.
As the soldiers practice their drills and march in formation, we delve into the craftsmanship of the 1700s with a demonstration on forging tools. Witness the creation of authentic period pieces and get a glimpse of daily life for soldiers and settlers alike. Finally everyone pitches in to move logs into position for continuing the work on the palisade This immersive experience brings history to life, blending education with hands-on activities. Former US Navy here. In the 1750's, the Union Flag was called a jack only when it was flown at the bowsprit of British naval vessels, but it was commonly called the Union Jack by the late 1700's. Great channel, excellent history and I truly appreciate your hard work!!!

My late spouse loved to hunt turkey… he’d make them into soup. When he passed, he gave me his rifle which I have not yet put to use. Appreciate that you had a sentry posted during the wall raising. Did they stand watch the whole time they were there? Love your videos Peter!

Hi, Peter! Great video. Nice to watch the re-enacting group. Looked like everybody had a great time. I have also, read accounts of woman fighting for both sides during our civil war. Even woman wearing men's clothing in rural areas of the frontier. Woman re- enactors no matter what their persona gets my approval! Good job everybody.

Have 'Fort' will find!...the troops to rally and the pilgrims to settle in! THAT MUST have bin fun for one and all! And the turkeys were fat and well accommodating = YUM! Must 'tickle-you-pink' Peter, to teach at your own forge, to listen to tales and to watch 'more of your time period' unfold. Empress Catherine, you too had the joy of the women-folk's comradery, yet all the while having to capture on film the goings-on everywhere...WELL DONE! "He who sweats more in training bleeds less in war." (Spartan philosophy). Health and blessings dear ones! ...'two, three, four...:)

One thing I wish I could get in the US bear grease for the muskets. I have a 1861 Enfield all original and have fired it. Cleaning it well is the chore. I'm trying to figure out how to display it on my wall and love the hangers that hold your rifle over your mantle. Do you sell them? Excellent turkeys. I like to lift the skin with my finger tips and rub butter under it. Great video.

Never really understood the reasons for close order drill until I read "A DEVIL OF A WHIPPING" about the Battlevof Cowpens in the Revolutionary War. Seems a misunderstood command could either make or break a battle. In the case of this battle the American regulars misunderstood a command and thought there was a retreat. They left the position in good order and formed up on the next hill. The Brits thought they had them and broke rank to chase them only to find them perfectly formed and firing into their lines. At which some of the British soldiers dropped their weapons and fell to their knees in shock. At which the American foot and the American cavalry charged. There was a total route. I believe if Morgan had been more senior in command and the Americans had been better trained earlier the Revolution might not have dragged on as long as it did.

You raise a valid point. In modern warfare it is perhaps not as important, but in Napoleonic warfare it was crucial.

@TheWoodlandEscape yes, after some training the American regulars could stand toe to toe with the British. Both Morgan and Washington valued trained disciplined soldiers but Morgan knew very well how to use militia too. He also knew something about men's endurance. He put every strain he could think of on Tarletans men and then chose his own ground when the time was right and he had them sufficiently worn down. He also had gauged Tarlton right too. That Morgan was a wise old fox and knew what he was about.

They were indeed, but wiped out. They were introduced in 1978 and the current population in Ontario is estimated at over 80,000 birds.

When we trained with the Brit Paras, they always started off with their right foot, whereas we (American Airborne) started with our left thanks to Von Steuben. Did the Brits used to start with their left as shown by the 49th?

Hi! I’m catching up on some of your videos that I’ve missed recently. I have a question about the end of your boom for the bellows. I see that you have an S shaped object attached as a handle, is that piece specifically for a blacksmith shop or was a “cobbled” together piece? My grandparents had a similar piece that has hung on the wall of their 19th century home since I was a child, and I was always told it was part of a horse yoke.

You’re spot on. It is called hames, one goes on each side of the leather collar on the horses neck. The reins pass through these on each side back to the person driving the horse. I used it because it is very ergonomic.

It was never an excepted practice, but, it is documented that in many wars a fe2 women passed themselves off as men in order to enlist.

Most come from historical documentation research/recourses. A good start to get a feel for life in the 18th century would be Allen Eckerts , The Frontiersmen. A novel,but very well researched.

The red diagonal thin cross was added to the Union Jack flag after Northern Irelands inclusion to the UK in the early 1800s.... A 1750s flag would not have this embellishment.

And while it is generally good to see people interested in the history, and taking part, once again I see a sort of non acceptance on the part of modern day folk, by not acknowledging the reality of those traditional societal roles.
