Toxic masculinity. What is it? Is it really an issue or is it some buzzword? We brought in two brothers to have a conversation about masculinity in all forms, but especially centered around being Black men: Karega Bailey, artist, educator, and angel father, and King Jay Barnett, author, speaker, and mental health therapist.
Perhaps more important than the question of what is toxic masculinity is “how do we acknowledge behavior that is toxic that seems to be consistently perpetrated by men”? Honestly, there are so many questions and points asked that this is only one piece of the framework necessary for healing. But we have to start somewhere and this is a great start with two phenomenal brothers.
Make sure you show Karega and Jay love on IG @karegabailey and @kingjaybarnett

There is nothing more healing and inspiring to me as a Black woman than seeing a group of beautiful Black men who are self-aware and emotionally intelligent, be vulnerable enough to share their inner thoughts and challenges. This is how we help heal each other: holding space, truly listening with our whole bodies and listening to understand and not to respond🙏🏾🥹✊🏾💗🔥🔥🔥

As a note, one premise of the term "toxic masculinity" stemmed from men defining Masculinity by toxic behaviors. In my understanding it was not a matter of villifying Masculinity but villifying the expression of harmful behaviors categorized as "Masculinity." There has been very little pushback from men up until now regarding this concept because one of its earlier iterations was "man's nature" whereby men were often excused for displaying negative nehaviors under the premise that they just couldn't help it bc they were a man, and that's just what they do, i.e. fits of anger, cheating, not communication, lack of self control/regulation etc. This served men by providing a scapegoat for them to hide behind. Admittedly "toxic Masculinity" has become anything people don't like. Healthy balanced masculine expression is as necessary as feminine. Recalibration is necessary. In this video, it's good to redefine the premise that Masculinity is nuanced, encompassing assertive, non aggressive traits. This is a message most NEVER hear, or embrace.

So succinctly put I concur its not as you said it's not villifying it but calling out the toxic behaviors allowed or given a pass saying it's the innate nature then perpetuated until it's a norm which is being highlighted.

It wonderful to hear dialogue with 3 beautiful Black Men. God Bless! I think a good starting point for men is for the more knowledgeable ones get together on the regular with less fortunate ones where you get to have open dialogue where you come in peace, egos left at the door, no judgements allowed and there is free talk, period! Where women talk freely and truthfully, good or bad unfortunately MEN DO Not HAVE that, they mostly BS WITH EACH OTHER!

I loved this conversation so much. It was so refreshing, revitalizing, and restorative to me because a young female I try my best to give men the freedom and the space to be themselves but the grace to continually evolve. I love Jay's mantra if you will, "that a man who finds his voice finds his way", but I'd take it a step further not excluding the focus and say that a people who find their voice will find there way. An today i'd argue that today the Black community is full steam ahead in that regard to evoke sustainable change.

I can listen to these type of men talk all day. Why? Their energy is inviting, calm and a secure place . They all speak in a matter they are heard , and it is not a debate. This is what make women feel safe. They are coming from healed place.

This is an amazing discussion for both men and women. I wish I could blast this all over the world ❤ . It so important especially to our black men to give themselves grace first that habit will naturally envolve into giving the rest of the world and your especially your partner the spcae to be human

As men, we have the capability to hurt and love. It's condescending to say that women dont have the same. Emotional control is required, period - it's not a masculine vs. feminine issue - the masculine vs. feminine conversation is foundational to feminism.
