The video with "The Coffin" is an obstacle course for sewer/underwater technicians. In order to get licensed, they have to complete the entire course, which includes lying on their back and pushing themselves through the 35ft long "coffin" which is pitch black and has 3 inches between the water and the cement ceiling. I think the people who do that for a living are a totally different breed (we do pay them very well, deservedly so).

When you were talking about the elevator and how there’s that “someone will get me out of here one way or another” feeling, and the feeling of being “stuck” as opposed to just being in a small space, that really put a finger on a weird feeling I’ve had for years. Moments where I’ve gotten stuck under my bed trying to reach for something or gotten locked in a small room or got stuck in a narrow space behind something I’ve always had that kind of instinctive claustrophobic feeling but I’ve always just been able to rationalise and tell myself that even if someone has to disassemble my bed or break down the door or destroy whatever I’m stuck behind, they can get me out of here, and I just stop panicking. It’s moments where there’s literally nothing anyone can do to get you unstuck that are so terrifying, like the idea of jamming yourself into a tiny crevice in a cave and having no way back or forward, and nothing anyone can do to get you out of that situation. That’s what hits the hardest for me.

There was actually a women who went missing in the 80s or early 90s that once found it was determined that she had squeezed behind her bookcase to plug in her tv and got stuck. Because her family's home was a horder house and very cluttered and messy, she apparently had been slowly dieing from constrictive suffocation and couldn't shout on account of the position of her lungs. After several weeks her sister had gone into her room to see if she could find a note or any clues as to what may have happened. She happened to look in just the right area and finally saw her sisters foot and realized where she'd been. After she'd been found and taken from the home several news stations conducted several interviews and because the questions were all based around asking the family how they could have gone so long without noticing her in her own bedroom, there were many factors that contributed to the difficulty that lead to her passing. According to her parents they had unfortunately acquired a horrible rat infestation on account of all the piles of junk in the house. Anytime the daughter may have banged on furniture or rattled any nearby walls they simply blamed it on the rats. They also never seemed to notice the odor of decomp since the home was rife with its own odor that seemed to never let up. Just an awful situation for everyone and the story has always stuck with me. Your post made me think of it right away.

Cliethrophobia is a name used for the fear of just being trapped, which I’d say most people are more aligned to compared to the more irrational fear of any enclosed spaces (claustrophobia). I’ve always thought “oh yeah I’m just claustrophobic” because the thought of being buried alive has been my worst nightmare for some time now. But I’ve really figured that I have the fear of just being trapped, because on the other hand I could easily do the enclosed elevator gig.

I don't have the phobia, but sometimes when I get somewhere really tight and I can't move, I get really uncomfortable and panicked. However if I had to choose between the "cave" side of claustrophobia, and the "elevator" side of it, I'm definitely way more freaked out from the cave videos.

The entire time I was in the back of this tin can on wheels, there were no windows, no fresh air, there were 8 of us (with 5 of us being pretty big dudes) in a cabin designed to hold 8 people max, and the entire time our hands were cuffed and shackled to our waists. if it makes you feel any better, no elevators are built to hang on their cables. There are extensive catching systems so it's pretty much impossible for an elevator to plummet. Unless you're in like a really really really sketchy one but almost no elevators like that actually exist or are in use anymore. It's far more dangerous to try to get out of a stuck elevator than to wait. (ie never try to get out if the elevator is in between floors, this is how the vast majority of elevator deaths happen)

The water tunnel one is the terrible. There could be a grate halfway through that allows water to pass through but not larger objects, and it's really hard to go against that current once you start. But caves... caves talk to my primal instinct of "do not go there." I have seen too many stories about how people have died in caves and I know too much about them to comfortably go near one where I do not have a tour guide.

That last one reminded me of this time during the halloween season when I was a kid. I went to this church thing and they had built this massive dark maze in the main part of the church out of hundreds of taped together cardboard boxes. You had to crawl to get through it. It felt like I was in there for a long time. At some point I came upon a more open part of the maze where the ceiling was high enough to sit up. There was a group of older kids in there with a glowstick, talking about older kid stuff. They said something to me I can't remember. Now that I'm older I realize how much it took to set that whole thing up, how cool it was, and how well whoever came up with that, understands kids.

Well once you are up, you are up there and can (in most cases) only push through to the end of the course you chose. Don't even know where my fear of heights came from. Used to climb trees as a kid nonstop and maybe because I wasn't exposed as often to heights my body/brain started to fear it? I am glad though that I am working through it slowly 💪🏻✨.

My fear with the cave and *especially* the ice one is that whatever is above you will shift and just totally crush you. Also the point about the elevator being a good indicator is really interesting to me because, while i don't have claustrophobia at all (been caving, to an extent), i *am* terrified of being trapped somewhere and not able/allowed to leave. For instance, i was in the ER for a little over a day and was fine but had to wait for tests to come back before they'd discharge me and i was almost having a panic attack for the entire last like 10 hours. Prison or psychiatric hospitalization sounds like actual hell to me (irregardless of all the actual hellish stuff that happens in those places) I'd take a tight cave over that any day.

i know im a bit late but i agree with you at 4:25. the thing is, im terrified of elivators so if one was stuck i would be PANICKING. i also hate caves so either way i would be terrified

The antelope canyon one in Arizona gets flooded in when it rains. Water actually shaped it to that.

God this video is making me realize I do have claustrophobia haha, that video of the mirrors and dark hallways did freak me out I hate funhouses for that reason, I panic immediately. It’s something in my little creature brain that says I can’t escape fast enough if something bad happens, I am a creature of flight apparently

I have a fear of being inside an MRI machine. I lasted 15 seconds before hitting the panic button !! The mirror room reminds me of my first fear of clasterphobia when I was lost inside a carnival fun house mirror room when I was six. I remember how scared and panicked including screaming until my sister saved me by showing me the way out. To this day I hate MRI & mirror rooms

Who knew you were afraid of vast oceans, and cramped caves. They're pretty much opposites!

I need a hug after watching that video. I'm morbidly terrified of even something so simple as EMR scanner where you are forced to go head first into a tube, unable to move your head, with wall right before your eyes (and if electricity would've dropped, you're getting stuck). That stuff is downright nighmares (that mirror room was cool though and elevators are decent, but I wouldn't want to be stuck in one). No way in hell I would try that thin wall attraction from Utah (not to mention the insane stuff like those rocky or artificial tunnels). But again, I'm a guy that as kid (and possibly as adult) was panicing when someone would hold the edges of a blanket I would hide under while playing, so...

Oh, right - and for some reason just a thought about plane travel scares me due to it being a closed space that gets cut from outside world. Despite that I like travelling with trains (but then again, trains are not getting cut from outside world while travelling).

I’m from Kentucky! That guy in the coal mining one is crazy bro. Also, I like the Over the Garden Wall poster you got on your wall

My biggest fear with cave diving, whether dry or underwater is how much these people struggle to get in them!!! And then! Thinking you still have to some how make it back out the same way!!! No! No! And F No!!
