You made a comment about only being able to play rugby for a few years. Tons of guys(and girls) play rugby well into into their 50s and 60 (some as old as 80). Recreationally of course. It’s called Old Boys and it’s still full contact until age 59, and longer if you choose to still wear the black shorts.

First thing all those guys you saw are pros, most of them started around age 10, some as soon as 4 (no tackling until year 8 or 10 i think). Playing as an amateur is way less intense, still requiers a pretty good cardio though. I played 10 years from 26 to 36(last season played 2016-2017), and just wish i had started sooner. Of all team sports i've played, still the one that brought me the best feelings. Some of what you saw was quite old, and even if basic rules remain the same, it evolves from year to year. A lot of things can't be done on the field, like tackling someone who's "airborne"

A huge amount of what's shown in the till i collapse rugby video are irregular Plays/fouls. Doesn't teach anything about the game, and reduce it to it's "violent sport" dimension. It's quite an over rated video

It's the same as bare knuckle boxing vs gloved up boxing, you only hit as hard as you feel comfortable hitting. If gloved boxers swung as hard without gloves as they do with gloves they would cause potentially major hand damage. The same with NFL vs Rugby (Union and League), Without the pads your only gonna hit soooo hard because you want to be able to get up and walk away too.

There's no such thing as "Holding" in rugby because you can not block. A player with the ball has to run straight at the defense by himself with his team behind him.
