I am from Kerala, India and coconut is the lifeline of our cuisine. It is there in almost all dishes and we have special knife to break them open as well as special apparatus to extract coconut shavings. My mom can break a coconut into symmetrical halves in one hit. You struggling with the coconut left me amusing :)😊

when draining a coconut, put another hole on the opposite side to help drain it faster. I used to feed my malamute puppy coconuts, he loved them :)

If you want to know how to open a coconut with nothing but a spoon (which is most ideal for eating them as is), find the eye (of the three) which is softest and poke through it with the end of your spoon. You can drink the coconut water or store it (it's good stuff!). To open the coconut, smash it against a hard corner surface on horizontally on the seam between the two eyes that have not been opened. I've lived on an island for almost two months now. You learn how to open a coconut pretty fast.
