Great interview! Yes! "Geographic Arbitrage" is the way to go. I also moved to Thailand for the same reasons he gave, with a lower cost of living being key. This allowed me to retire a bit early too, and a huge advantage that wasn't discussed was staying single with no kids! Dave, you started by saying "Growth investing OR Income investing"; I say, why is it "or" and not "and"? I think you can and should have both. As I do, I continually boost the income portion of my portfolio by reinvesting dividends, but I also trade options daily for growth. How to know when to retire (I heard this somewhere and I share it): you can achieve retirement when the lifestyle you enjoy while working can be maintained when you're not working. If you usually travel business class while employed, then you should be able to do the same in retirement. On the other hand, if you normally travel economy, don't expect a jump to first class. The investments Professor Armchair has reviewed on his channel has really helped me accelerate my income. I used to think 3-4% was a good yield; now I aim for his 8-10% and it's real!

Dave, great vdeo as always. The great thing about an income dividend investment strategy is that you can have both growth and income. I personally take a portion of my dividends and reinvest them in growth equity ETFs. One feeds the other so to speak. If I need extra income in any particular month, then I just buy less of the growth category investments for that month.
@wealthadventuresАй бұрын
I like the income idea but still want to focus on growth. But I'm also not retired yet!
@Bullseye120Ай бұрын
@@wealthadventures Understand. I am retired and I still am buying growth equities with excess dividends every other month or so. Before I retired I created a sample budget so that I could figure how to still get a psuedo paycheck every month. Dividend investing help made goal possible, and I am somewhat fearful of sequence of return risk if I would have used the bucket strategy instead. Good Luck.

Thanks, for this. I've watched a number of AI's videos, and picked up some details along the way, but this gave me a much clearer picture of his background. I was laid off back in April and decided I didn't want to try to find another job. I'm fairly certain my portfolio isn't as large as his, and I'm not engaging in geo-arbitrage, so I'm shooting for a higher yield than him. However, I'm re-investing some of my income in the more conservative funds, so I'm working on lowering my desired yield.

Dave, A question for you, a potential complementary strategy I wanted to get your thoughts on: A successful hybrid approach for the audience who does trade options. If you took a large covered call ETF from JPM, GS or other that had Optionality available, you could hedge the position by writing Collars on the ETF. Now you are receiving the monthly income and protecting the downside by writing Collars. Have you any experience trying this? Obviously, this would only work with large CC ETF's that you can trade options on. Most of the KZbin videos don't and won't look at this, but it could be a choice for folks going into or are currently in retirement.
@wealthadventuresАй бұрын
I will try and incorporate it in a video. It is a fun thought but difficult to make work to a real advantage. Even the largest CC ETFs still have low option volume.

Another great video, Dave. Always good to see two of my favorite investing youtubers chat. You covered a lot of ground and it was quite illuminating and informative. I do wish, however, that you had the chance to ask Mr Armchair about taxes. As a relatively new and youngish retiree who hasn’t faced a tax bill that is almost entirely based qualified and non-qualified dividends yet, but will in 2025, it’s one of my greatest sources of stress and I’d love to some guidance from you gentleman about how to manage it properly. For example, should I consider tax advantaged ETFs that return income as ROC and weight my portfolio appropriately? Should I save all my dividend income from the first quarter and use that to pay the tax bill? Is these some other method that is more ideal? I’m not even sure what else to ask and eventually I hope to have a reliable tax pro to help me out with these and other questions that I haven’t considered, but I still looking for the right person. Anyway, thanks again. Appreciate all that you do.
@wealthadventuresАй бұрын
It would be best to talk to a tax pro. I'm not sure about what Armchair faces with taxes considering where he lives. For me, I pay quarterly estimates and track where I'm at since I trade lots of options. Looking for tax efficient products that use index options, ROC, and have qualified dividends certainly helps. Fidelity makes it pretty easy to see how distributions are being categorized through the year so you may find what you need summarized with your brokerage.
@hechticАй бұрын
@@wealthadventures Thanks for the speedy reply. I suspect his tax situation is more complex than mine given that he was (and maybe still is) a resident in the US and has to pay taxes both here and in Thailand, but honestly, I have no idea. I certainly will speak with tax pro once I find one I'm comfortable with. It's not as easy to find someone as you'd think. When I ask CPAs and other tax professionals if they have experience in exactly my situation or something similar1, invariably they do not, which always surprises me. I'm not really interested in paying a CPA to learn how to best assist me. I want someone who know what they are doing. I do have a Fidelity account and I like it, but it's just holding assets from a former employers stock purchase plan and my woefully underfunded HSA. Most of the income generating accounts are with Schwab. There is a page for "tax-efficient investing". I'll take a look and see if it helps. thanks again!

A channel of the two of you together would be great indeed. Why not start by creating simple explanations and actioning them for some of the products that gets featured on both of your channels. Like a DIY version of HYBI for example. Combination of investing for retirement AND playing around with option strategies to keep you both busy ;-). And spread your knowledge. Monthly comparison of the results versus the ETF, can be fun and a great learning experience. Option premiums are driven by volatility. An ETF like SPY that is at 500/share might generate a 15% annualized premium under normal conditions for a 30 day ATM call. @@wealthadventures I thought it did, but then I went back through the data of JEPI and I don't see a correlation between the stock's gains/loses and its distribution. I tried looking at it's highest/lowest stock price compared to distribution and identifying equal distributions and checking the stock price. The stock price and the distribution don't seem to have a direct correlation.
@wealthadventuresАй бұрын
@@OneNvrKnoz We have not seen a market in a long time that would replicate that example. It would be hard to see an impact since JEPI has been around. We have seen a decline in the distributions from JEPI while the VIX has been subdued over the last year. Think about options as a bet on the expected move. If a stock is at 100, how much do you expect it to move based on volatility? If the same stock went to 1000, would you expect the move to be the same or relative to the price?

The problem I see with "income investing" (Armchair's portfolio, Bavaria's income factory, et al.) is geographic/sector concentration, lack of downside protection, and lack of growth assets. It works great during up market times but in a deep/prolonged down market these portfolios will likely suffer.

@walterkok4799Ай бұрын
yes for me it is a good approach. It is all about proper sizing that position so that the crypto (and its volatility and risk) does not become your portfolio. Set proper stops and start small as a % of your portfolio. When it takes off (like now with btc), just peel off some of those crypto holdings. This way you assure that the risks stays within your tolerance for the position and you can reinvest that cash
