Hi Gary, I found by placing an assortment of Wren houses around the property, the Chickadees and Wrens moved in and raised their families. I read an article in Smithsonian mag by a biologist that decided to count the caterpillers that the chickadee parents brought to the chicks. He counted 1100+ caterpillars per chic in 14 days! Wow it worked! My garden is well patrolled, and the birds have become tame, and the pest pressure has become reduced! The brassicas are under netting, one mistake I made is the frame wasn't high enough or wide enough and the moths laid their eggs on the leaves that were against the mesh. So next year I will have to build a larger support frame. Love your informative videos. God Bless.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын
I was reading about C and W last night. Most birds switch to insects to feed their young. I was thinking the same thing about leaves touching. I will dedicate an area. Ill still spray but I just want to reduce it drastically. Do the wren and chickadee house vary drastically from bluebird houses.

Sunflowers were a beacon for squash bugs, beetles, cucumber beetles etc for me last year. It was the first year I planted a bunch of sunflowers and the pests quadrupled for me. It was insane! I couldn’t grow them this year because of that and I’m just now putting out plants from those families this year hoping to starve them out and miss their lifecycle 🤷🏻♀️ I’m gonna do the same with my kale this year and making screens for brassicas and squash next year as well.

What a lovely, peaceful and productive place you have made. I only have a patio and a long space along my home, but am enjoying a wildflower patch, several sunflowers my neighbor and I have planted, as well as zucchini and cherry tomatoes in smart pots. I did do a second planting of cucumbers in ground (I have had to amend a lot because of all the years the development put down products) and found the Coast of Maine mixed in with other organic soils is working very well. I did bamboo tepees for the tomatoes. I am wondering why they have stopped producing flowers though, as both the Sweet 100 and Husky Cherry Red are supposed to be indeterminate. I will be cutting them back as I harvest whole fruit clusters in hopes new growth will sprout further down. I did an experiment with a cutting early on and that cutting is starting now to show fruit. I think this was my favorite video of yours so far.

This is such an informational video with the observations made about the birds, wasps, beneficial flies, etc, coming in due to the flowers. I suspected this from my own observations just recently since I don't use dust and my squash and zucchinis are thriving. Your videos always seem to mirror what I am experiencing, they are very helpful. I also have a garden plot at a community garden that has great composted soil but a lot of people use dust and I see a difference in the number of birds and beneficial insects at that garden. I would say that dust is definitely abused by many.

Hi Gary, this is one of my favorite of your recent videos. And thank you so much, by the way, for taking the time to make your videos! I watch every one! But, for this particular video, I just love your very introspective thought process, almost like you are processing the information while you are filming. The sunflowers are gorgeous, btw. But you believe, and you may be right, that their presence, along with the other flowers, brings in birds and other beneficial insects. I happen to have a decent sized flower bed in my front yard, adjacent to half my garden, that got overrun by sunflowers this year, and I just let it go. Probably over 50 sunflower plants in a pretty small space, as well as a couple of dozen in the back yard. Is there a result? I don't know. I also have very few if any squash bugs. I occasionally see them and squish them. May be a coincidence. Also, and it may be luck or coincidence, but I have about 8 summer squash (zucchini and scallop) plants in grow bags around my garden. Last year, they all got decimated by vine borers. This year, no sign of vine borers, KNOCK ON WOOD! with BT. I had planned to encase all my brassicas in a hoop tunnel covered with insect netting, but I never completed that project. Sounds like you are also tired of spraying the brassicas. Thanks for the video and thoughts!
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын

Although the cabbage moths are surprisingly difficult to catch with a net and are day active, I've found that using a Dynatrap and a bug zapper light at night really helps with moths and other insects. The Dynatrap will sometimes catch the cabbage moths. But they mostly work at night and will not harm pollinators and other beneficial day active insects. I have cut down on spraying almost entirely, and have more beneficial insects overall

I'm jealous of your cucurbits. In SC by this time there's a moth that lays eggs on them, and the larva bores holes in all of them. Sprays don't seem to help much either; I think I'd basically have to frame insect netting around them and hand pollinate.

Planting the flowers ad herbs to attract the predators is a great idea. I will definitely try that because I hate the squash bugs. Do you spray or apply any pesticides on your sunflowers? I have little grey bugs that sit on the leaves of mine.

So my routine varies a lot so its hard to really duplicate. But I add in H202. And that helps. I use seranade on tomatoes early to help stop leaf spot, h202 works on the early blight after that. Very informative video. Thank you. I love using the benefits of nature. This is my first year with the vegetable garden, although I've been flower gardening for about 10 years. The bird houses: I put a house in my flower garden this year. A family of tree swallows moved in, and every time I tried to visit the birds would bomb dive me. DH tried and the mom and her friends bomb dived him. Have you ever had that problem? If so, how did you handle? Our property is surrounded by acres of open fields and a creek running through our yard, two features the tree swallows prefer. Have you ever experienced problems with territorial birds? I let them stay in the house until the babies grew up and out then we removed the house. 🙁

I'm pretty sure BT is considered part of an organic program. (BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS (BT)). It'll handle the cabbage looper problem, as well as other larvae / caterpillars as they much on the leaves. Once they ingest the BT, they stop eating, and eventually die of starvation. - RS

Nature taking on nature. I remember when I had HUGE infestation of hornworms. and one of them had white eggs on its back. I didn't now what that was. Turned out something called a predator wasp laid its eggs on the worm and it hatches on it . .. and eats the worm alive. So I guess that's one way to get rid of hornworms with predator wasps. I've seen a huge uptick in bees. Agastache and bee balm have worked wonders and I am ordering more. They help me and I help them. I have not seen the squash vine borer this year. . . and I Hope I don't either.
