I love how you share your good and the bad. Usually garden videos just show the good and lush plants. My garden is done here in Florida. Too much time watering only to have them dry up hours later. Just keeping the okra, sweet potatoes and a few others alive at this point. I'm also suffering with garden burn out. Can't wait for the fall garden. Your garden looks great for the most part. No tomatoes and green beans for me this year. Spider mites took out all of them. I couldn't get on top of the issue. I gave up because nothing was working, they moved too quickly. Cooking cut ins are great. Here's to cooler weather. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

Hi Gary, thanks for showing the good, the bad, and the ugly…keeps it real! Would love to have a session on animal pests. Deer, groundhogs, voles, rabbits, squirrels, raccoons. I have built some hardware cloth cages around some of my watermelons in hopes of actually getting one for us this season. But these critters are even eating my marigolds… which are supposed to ward off critters. Ugh.

I was out of town for 8 days and temps here were super hot while I was gone (100+). Fortunately, I had timed watering for my veggies - and aside from growing a lot, they did ok. But man, the weeds everywhere else in the yard - Yeesh. Some of my tomatoes are finally just starting to blush and squash that is amazing me (both went in late) - but to your point, I am heat fatigued as well. Cooking video cut-ins - yepper, anyway you want to handle it, would love to see more. Thank you!

Came home from the lake,found my 2nd planting of bush beans ravaged by a critter. One grow pot is wrapped in insect coverage, all in place still but beans eaten down... chipmunks likely. Other pot has hardware mesh around it. Just new sprouts...gone. so, replanted, and reconfigured protection. Darn critters!

Excellent ramblings as usual. The heat and humidity just tires me out, so I'm taking the time to reflect inside in the air conditioning. This year was all about narrowing down the varieties that grow best in my garden and taking good growing notes. Since I have some data points from spring, I can't wait for fall gardening and for the heat to break.

Gary, the large metal tubs you plant in, do you add drainage holes before you set them in place and then fill them? Also, thank you, I’ve shadowed many of your techniques this season and have had the best season ever. I have a shade cloth area set up as well for cool weather crops. When will you move them out into final position? Lastly, the large hoop style wire mesh trellis near the watermelons, do you use them for trellising or do you use them for insect netting too? My biggest problem each season are from the cabbage moth and leaf spot and fungal diseases. I’ve been using the H202 spray but also tried some copper fungicide. I think everything is working well but my cantaloupes lower leaves are really beat up, yellow with black and brown spots. I’ve been pruning them off. Sorry for the multiple questions in a single message but you’ve been incredibly helpful and attentive to us subscribers. God bless you.

Hey Gary I always enjoy your videos and all the information you put out there. My problem is I'm growing tomato plants in wicking buckets 5 gallon buckets with water bottles in the bottom and a whole drilled about 5 in up. They're growing really good I have a lot of tomatoes setting on but they're slow to turn all of them are green what can I do?
@oldbear6813
@oldbear6813 2 жыл бұрын
If you are keeping them watered and have trimmed them throughout the season, it's likely just the heat that is keeping them green, sadly we can't control the weather. You could try trimming off any excess foliage and smaller tomatoes so that the plant focuses more on the larger fruits. I know I'm not Gary but hopefully this helps, best of luck 👍

It is hot and humid here in Talladega Co. Alabama, zone 7B. Two of my cucumber vines are dying off--no complaints, I've collected ample cucumbers from them. They are too tangled with other growth to bother with removing them. I have five new vines replacing them. My zucchini are done, and on the way to the compost bin. I am sowing seeds for Yellow Scallop Squash, and Lemon Squash to replace them. My Bonny's Best tomato plants are producing more fruit now, than they did all spring, and I have replaced my Beef Steak Tomatoes with 2 Roma Tomatoes, and 2 Dad's Sunset tomatoes. I have a batch of Danvers ready to harvest, and I recently planted New Kuroda, Purple Dragon, Kyoto Red, and Uzbek Yellow carrots, also Navone Gold Rutabagas, Purple Top Rutabagas, and turnips--all are doing well. My second crop of beans is well under way, and my peppers and eggplant are still producing. I have a batch or red potatoes that I will be harvesting next week, and I will be planting more the same day, then again in two weeks. Oh, I made four quarts of Bread and Butter Pickles last night.

Hi Gary, I am battling the fungus issues as well, treating w/ H2O2 and baking soda. I have been holding off planting a new Greenstalk tower for fall because I am worried about the fungal issues. Should I wait a bit longer or just go ahead and plant fall crops?

I would just plant. It really is hard to manage diseases by planting around them. The plants should get growing and the fungal issues should fade as they are maturing with no worries. Last year I had great success growing peppers in the greenstalk. I had a sweet pepper tower and a hot pepper tower, reach tower had 3 peppers on the top 4 tiers and 4 peppers on the bottom tier. I had herbs and flowers interspersed. All of my plants produced peppers. This year I am successfully growing patio eggplant in a greenstalk. For fall I have plans for a tower of greens with beets & carrots on the top tier and a tower of strawberries and garlic. I’m very greedily packing my towers full of more and more dwarf plants, just to see how much will thrive. Happy gardening.

I try and take all the highly damaged ones. But I just found the fungus is there on leaves that have a few marks and even invisible on others. So its just about soaking the leaves with the spray. Maybe a bit lazy too. Appreciate your honesty about garden fatigue. I'm feeling it, too! And right when some of my veggies need canning. 🤦‍♀️ But, we're so grateful for the harvest we get. 🙏 We've had gorgeous weather this past week in MN; but the heat is ramping up this coming week again - nothing new here for July and August, though. Really like the idea of cooking cut-ins! Thanks for all your advice and ideas. 🙂
