Agreed. Some of these last few reviews (Manchester by the Sea, Nocturnal Animals, Arrival, etc) I've found myself heavily leaning towards Matt's opinions. I like Alonso and Christy a lot but I feel like they've been missing the boat with a couple of these films. Opinions are opinions though so I can't complain.

Alonzo has the worst taste in films. His highest rating given in 9 months was Ghostbusters 2016 8/10 ( look it up ) , yet he loves WESTWORLD and 99% of the MARVEL crap that's released. "His highest rating given in 9 months was Ghostbusters 2016 8/10" you clearly don't watch this channel very often, because he gives scores higher than that on a pretty frequent basis. want examples? last month he gave Moonlight a 9.8/10, the same day this review was posted he gave Elle a 9, Nocturnal Animals an 8.5, Doctor Strange an 8.8, The Handmaiden a 9. do your research before you make yourself look like an idiot. and you still can't get over the fact that people liked the new Ghostbusters? it actually wasn't that bad, move on.

I have a working heart, but the emotional content in this film did not work for me. The scene at the end with Michelle Williams felt overdone by Michelle's behalf which surprised me bc I find her to be always good and nuanced but not there. It stifled the buildup to what was a really remarkable and true ending. Also, when I was waiting for the film to get more stylized, that extended flashback sequence in the middle appeared with a heavy classical piece underpinning and that felt overdone by the end of it too, almost pretentious. I think I was just not a fan of the directorial choices in this film and therefore, it left me as cold as the weather depicted in the film even though Casey Affleck, Lucas Hedges, Kyle Chandler and Michelle Williams (apart from that final scene) were fantastic.

Darin Michael haha. you must not understand filmmaking. directing is not math. it's not right or wrong. it's experimental and it can appeal to some and not appeal to others. a shot can linger on someone standing in the field. for one person, it can get under their skin in an effective way and for another it can bore them. stop acting like cinema is math please. it's not black and white, yes and no. study, learn, think. get off your high horse. you're not the be all end all of what makes a good film. have a great day my friend!

I agree with Alonzo on this one. There is a movie every year that gets rave reviews from critics, and everyone eats those movies up just because the critics say so. I don't think people are actually saying this movie is great themselves, i think like most award season movies, people are being pressured to jump on the bandwagon. This movie will not stand the test of time, it will win all of the awards this year, including Best Actor by Casey Affleck and possibly best director for this year; however, i don't think anyone will reference this film 10 to 15 years down the road. This film is a good movie for this year, but that's all. This reminds me of how the King's Speech got so much acclaim, but personally, the movie was is not memorable at all. What i am getting at is do not feel pressured to like a movie just because the critics say so, if you genuinely like a movie, then great for you.

I like Christy and Alonso for having the balls to admit that they don't love it. There are some movies out there which are ridiculously hailed as masterpieces, without any allowed doubt of criticism.The less fun they are, the better they are. Sure, Manchester by the Sea is a potent, superbly acted, well crafted character drama, but it is also utterly pointless, free of dramaturgy and 30 minutes to long. I get the point that it should be that way, just like "normal life" etc., but there is no need for me to watch people beating their daily life, when there is no resolution at the end... i just go watch normal people. There are two emotional scenes, but when you truly want to cry and get invested in cinema, then watch "Lion".Also nominated for Best picture and so much better movie for me.
@shuwaidaa7 жыл бұрын
xXMisterMilchmannXx if there's no "people beating their daily life", this would be like some other movies in general. so boring. make me even more noticed that i am watching a movie, not real life. in real life, resolution is not always going so well. i also cried a lot when watching lion. but i think manchester by the sea is not meant to make people cry. but it's kinda engage the audience to feel the pain without have to say it directly. and if people got cry, that's what makes the movie even more beautiful

I just saw this movie, and I kinda agree with... all of them? It's a very powerful movie, but it relies on the emotional weight too much, and not much else. Although I disagree with Alonso's criticism that this movie didn't need to wrap things up in a bow, it seems to take a long painful route to an obvious and unsatisfying destination. The performances were strong but the dialog seemed off at times, and the few attempts at humor fell flat.

Thought this was a pretty underwhelming movie. I appreciated a lot of the subtlety he decided to write into the characters, but it felt too much like an Oscar film with all the snappy and snarky dialogue that seemed out of place in this particularly somber narrative. There's a really powerful film in there layered with true humanity but it felt too ingenuine to really shine through.

I haven't seen this yet but I did just finish watching Margaret for the first time. I gotta say, I found Margaret to be uneven but compelling. Some scenes just didn't work (especially the accident scene that propels the plot) but it is powerfully acted and it's a testament to how involving the movie is that despite being 2 and a half hours long, I was never bored, and the time pretty much flew by fast. It did not feel that long. Looking forward to this movie which will be (alongside Hacksaw Ridge) the next DVD coming in the mail from Netflix.

I would give it an 8. It is good, and heart rending at times, and I don't need an ending where everything is tied up in a bow but there wasn't enough catharsis by the end. Whether it be a sad or happy or ambiguous ending, there needed to be a bigger payoff than what it had. Affleck is great in it but I think several actors could have done just as well in this role.
@americanslime8 жыл бұрын
I really like this movie as a born and bred Mass resident. And like a lot of movies this year it is interesting as an exploration of masculinity, but it's not great. I really don't feel like there's a significant development of almost any of the characters. They pretty much all start and end the movie in the same place, there's almost no plot, so all you really get is a lot of atmospherics and leaning heavily on the actors (kind of like Alonso said). I will say I really like all these characters and they do feel very real to me. Every character in the movie keenly reminds me of people I know or even myself, and the movie is very good at making you feel immersed in the setting even beyond the overt New England-ness of it. The hospital scenes in the first act are amazingly convincing- my father spent most of my childhood in hospitals before dying when I was in high school, and those hospital sequences felt incredibly reminiscent of those years to me. There is a lot to be said for this movie, it just didn't stick the landing.

Finally saw this and I don't understand the praise it's getting either. Yes, it has great acting by Affleck and doesn't take the easy route that other lesser movies might, but it is far from a "masterpiece".
