People are so weird towards critics. Just because they disagree with your taste in film, it doesn't mean they are wrong. It's their opinion. The reviewers on What the Flick are a lot more polite than others (Rex Reed for one). Just because they don't share your views does not mean it hinders your enjoyment. Unless their comments make you change your mind, you have nothing to worry about. Saying you hate critics and bashing their opinions just shows how insecure you are about yours. If you're that desperate to defend your enjoyment of a film, that's your problem. It's just silliness.

I Consider TDKR A Masterpiece. It's My Favorite Nolan Film.
@justinzarian460811 жыл бұрын
I really wanted to love this movie especially since I enjoy almost every Christopher Nolan film, but this was perhaps his weakest film. And honestly, it all comes down to how bloated, unfocused and studio driven the script was. It felt like they had to force a conflict to happen without anything genuinely deep to say or a threat that actually felt threatening. Bane is big and scary, but a poorly thought out twist undermines this to make him a complete pushover. The subplot with JGL was unnecessary as it just meant we got less Batman to actually enjoy. Catwoman was completely underutilized despite Anne Hatheway actually being pretty good in the role. The whole bomb thing was never a problem because we knew exactly how it would end. The action scenes weren't even shot, edited or choreographed well (on two separate occasions, we visibly see a henchman fall over during a group fight without anyone or anything hitting them!). And I will simply not discuss the plot holes because that's several pages worth of discussion. It just felt joyless and bland.

I think if fans of Nolan look at his work with thicker lenses you will see a lot of cracks. Don't get me wrong he is brilliant and his Batman films work, but there is a lot of pretentious overwrought and downright laughable contrivances too. The pacing of The Dark Knight rises is particularly bad with too much focus on stuff that should be shifted over to Bruce and Batman. The whole ending was rushed and to be honest a fairly unsatisfying finale for a series that had so much more potential. I still enjoy the film for what it is, but unfortunately it had to follow two excellent films which are infinitely better. I agree with What The Flick on this one!

no hassle Thanks for watching!
@spencermalley1010 жыл бұрын
You're entitled to your opinion but I completely disagree (especially about the finale being in anyway "unsatisfying:) The third film is a tough nut to crack in any film series (especially superhero movies I'm finding) but for all its flaws, I don't think that TDKR deserves to be lumped in the same category as Spider-man 3 or X-men the Last Stand)
@GetToDaChoppa-k5r10 жыл бұрын
Spencer Malley Yeah, but surely you get my drift. It was way to convoluted and overly serious for its own good. I also hated the chemistry between Selina and Bruce and the introduction to The Robin character.
@spencermalley1010 жыл бұрын
no hassle I'm sorry but from where I stood, It was no more "convoluted" or "serious" than the previous two and the acting, cinematography and direction were all par the course for a typical Nolan film. I actually thought Bruce had more chemistry with Selina then he did with either Rachel Dawes and I felt Blake was a very likable character as well. I guess the only other option would be for Nolan to refuse to come back and to have WB bring in another director to direct Bale and his co-stars to make another young Batman vs another psychological threat type story which I wouldn't have objected too, but I think TDKR works spectacularly as a conclusion.
@thatguycalledisaac336710 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you!! I still like this film and I frikkin loved the scene when Alfred says goodbye to Bruce! I just wished that I could've taken bane more seriously and the pacing (like you and what the flick said) was better. I do think there are other flaws as well which I was shocked to find in a nolan film.

In retrospect, TDKR is actually VERY UNDERRATED. It gets better upon every re-watch. Expectations made up for a lot of the negativity this film got. Overall, it's very ambitious with lots of moments of greatness, with some flaws here and there only made obvious by the sheer quality of the rest of the film around them and Nolan's almost perfect track record to compare to.

It's overlooked a lot & people were too negative on the 3rd movie. This movie is obviously stuffed with a lot of sub plots but it manages to impress despite a rushed denouement. Maybe I wanted this movie to be a 2 parter. The prequel dark knight was slightly boring at the start as it was poorly staged, but picks up right from the joker's kills on the Gotham's elite & then it becomes unpredictable. This movie was better paced & more entertaining but lacked a stronger villain like the joker, even though bane was a monster in this, his motivation was lacking in this.
@IAmError070612 жыл бұрын
I whole heartedly agree with this, this movie's entire success is based off of the success of the reputation and legacy of the first two movies, of which were so great that people are completely blinded to the infestation of flaws that this movie has.

That’s why: .....-> 1) better cinematography 2) better action 3) better character development (especially via flashbacks) 4) AND THE MOST IMPORTANT more emotional bound through the characters as the plot flows. The Dark Knight had; better perfomances (see HL) and *maybe better agony action flow, but yet this isnt the reason to top TDKR. anyway i guess this is a matter of personal taste.

Honestly, I have a great respect for movie critics. They give their honest opinions regardless of what people might think of them. So for that, in this instant I have great respect for Christie. But I don't understand how she rated a twilight film higher than this. Cause according to her scores she thinks twilight is a better shot, directed, acted, scored, written film then the TDKR? I would like to get her insight
@bigidiot12311 жыл бұрын
She's like the teacher in school that would never give anyone an A because she didn't think anyone really deserved it. I've watched a few reviews by these guys and she's consistently giving worse scores than every one else in the room. If TDKR is a 5 I would fucking love to see what a 10 is to her.
@sonicjrjr1411 жыл бұрын
The Twilight series is a mediocre film franchise that no one expected much from. So when the last movie actually turned out to be pretty entertaining, it actually exceeded expectations (if there were any to begin with) and made for a pleasant experience. Dark Knight Rises, however, had a much harder act to follow. Given how great and innovative the first 2 movies were, you walk into DKR with expectations and when it doesn't meet them you come out with a bad taste in your mouth. Also, the fight scenes in Breaking Dawn Pt. 2 were WAY better shot than the ones in DKR. Just saying.
@seansilveiro246311 жыл бұрын
but what does anticipation have to do with the quality of the film?
@QuickenedSand10 жыл бұрын
Anticipation has nothing to with the film's quality, but it affects your perception of the film. Let's say you have high hopes for a film, but it's mediocre run leaves you underwhelmed, you're more likely to give the film a lower score. But if you don't expect much from a film, and left the theater entertained, your surprised enjoyment may give the film a higher score.
@seansilveiro246310 жыл бұрын
okay but say for example, a teacher has two students... one of them is an amazing student, the other is a terrible student... would it be fair to give the terrible student a better grade on an essay simply cause she wasn't expecting it to be passable then the amazing student because maybe his essay was subpar in contrast to his others, even if the essay was better structured, formulated. written etc.

psychoabattoirhorror Everything you're saying makes sense and if this universe included the DC universe. Groups like Argus, suicide squad, etc. They would've figured he was batman. In the first movie Luscious stated that they couldn't get the tumbler to do a vertical take off and the military passed on it. Also people only got barely a glimpse at the tumbler in the first movie. It was dark the tumbler was black. Putting two and two together would be fine except its been 10yrs since someone has last seen the tumbler in the first movie. Honestly someone would have chalked it all up to: 1. They are paramilitary funded by that dagget weasel who is a chairman of the board. 2. They stole from Wayne tech.

I don't even know why I watched this. The review kind of danced around the subject, knit picking various irrelevant things and never really delving into the meat of the matter, which is that the movie sucked. It was just a stupid movie. Of course most people don't know what great movies look like, so they don't realize it. That's fine, ignorance is bliss. But really the screenplay was cheesy and terrible, there was various scenes that simply did not make sense, and overall the logic of the movie could only make sense in movie world (that place where everything makes sense). This would all be fine, if the preceding movies had not set up an expectation that the movie would be something more than a Saturday morning cartoonish rendition of the batman comics. While the comics spend a great deal of time and effort perfecting the logic of their own universes, this movie goes back to 60s comics storytelling in that it just doesn't care. And that's fine, because most people like anything with a Zimmer score, intense acting, fast jump cuts and shaky cam, Chris Nolan, explosions, super heroes, and really serious self conscious story telling. Put all those things together and most people will like it. There you go there is how I would have done the review.

There was just so much in this movie, the action scenes were beyond great, Bane was scary and realistic as hell, and to see Batman old and defeated, I could relate to that, I'm 33 :) , JGL is one my 3 favorite actors, I think he's like a mini-Heath Ledger, they played together in "10 things" and Joseph has been looking more like him ever since. I believe she was talking about the Miranda Tate character, the one woman in the film Bruce sleeps with. I agree with Christie on that count, the romance was rushed, there's minimal build up to it and it felt really spontaneous. It hurts even more since Miranda becomes a very important part of the story at the end, in a twist that's pretty much there only for people who know the Batman mythology and no other reason. Overall, films should stand by themselves, not on the source material.

Calm down. I just felt that TDKR became a succession of set-pieces and Gary Oldman [who in my opinion gave the best, most real, performance TDK and Batman Begins] is under-used. I would go on but I'd just be repeating myself, I think I made my point about the themes quite well. Were you impressed mostly by the massive set-pieces [the scene at the football stadium etc.] or was there anything more that you got out of it? :)
@jakejonescomedy10 жыл бұрын
It's really a testament to Nolan as a director that he can make a bad movie and still not have you notice it until the second viewing, because while you're watching it it's just that engrossing. This is a big, bloated crime drama with way too many themes, a stale script, etc., but there are fragments of greatness and a tone that is set of a pure epic. So it's hard to see the faults right away, as it was with even Inception, which was better but still imperfect.

That's fair, but I would argue that Beasts of the Southern Wild is a more impressive achievement. The lead actress was six, the director is a 29-year-old rookie, and it showed a world unlike any other. Also, not that it matters much in the end, but the soundtrack was one of the best of the last couple decades.

I was at first disappointed at how simplistic the movie was in terms of plot and communicating the villain's being compared to the second movie, and there were a lot of plot abnormalities, but after thinking about it more I think I understand what Nolan was doing and what kind of themes he wanted to enforce. With expectation no longer being a part of the equation, I think my home viewing when the Blu-Ray comes out is going to be a lot more enjoyed.

You make some great points. However, I did not go into this movie thinking that I was going to watch another Inception type movie. Two completely different movie platforms. Also, Bane and the Joker are two completely different types of villains. The Joker scares us from the beginning. Bane only scares us once we understand exactly how calculating and callus he is. Also, the Joker plays out well on the screen. Bane can be tough to fear until you begin to understand him.
@Yamikaiba12312 жыл бұрын
I call them more like plot abnormalities. While they were possible, I don't think some major things were fleshed out enough to pass the scrutiny of someone who's concentrating on watching the film. I was brought out of the movie in the mid-point because I couldn't figure out what the villain's agenda was. The second movie on the other hand did a wondrous job characterizing the Joker and his philosophy.

This movie is framed like Batman Begins in which her character is like her father. Plotting her schemes behind the scenes and having a relationship with Bruce as false ally. Listen to her dialogue, it's nearly the same as her fathers. Her presence tells were bane is going to be at, i.e the Stock marker, nuclear reactor or Wayne enterprise meeting. that's cool, i'm quite a fan of JGL too, I'm a bigger fan of Gary Oldman and i feel the two of them are under-used here in favour of huge set-pieces. You're right, the fight scenes are effectively tough. I guess the main problems i had were with the script; i thought the dialogue was clunky. I also feel that it's much too long [I don't think length is a measure of depth]. I really wish i had enjoyed it more because i liked the other 2 - Batman Begins remains my favourite of Nolan's 3 :)

Loved the movie and, although some of the criticism is definitely justified, I cannot fathom how it can ever be given a 5/10 (an average movie?). It is a comic book movie. Just because Nolan wisely decided to drop some of the camp and introduce a more 'realistic' and emotional side to the proceedings it does not mean that it needs to be stripped of the fantastical elements that make Batman what he is. As for the length I have this to say: When the movie ended I wishing it was longer.

honestly i liked the dark knight better, however it is by a very very slim margin. this was a phenominal movie, and it takes a lot to have a great third/final movie in the series. and they did end it right. i haven't read any "professional" critiques of this movie but i don't get how this could be labeled as a bad movie. it kept me guessing, and although the one thing i disliked is how bane died, it just didnt seem right. other than that, i don't think they could have done it any better

I did really wish that Batman's line to himself about Catwoman would have been delivered without the batvoice. It would have felt really sincere in a surprising way.

Uh does this sound bad to you:Oh using darkness as your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it...molded by it. I didn't see the light 'til I was already a man. By then it was nothing to me but blinding!!! The shadows betray you because they belong to me! I'll show you where I have made my home while preparing to bring justice... then I will break you. Ahhh yes, I was wondering what would break first!?! Your spirit... or your body! -Bane

Thank you.. This soundtrack is among Hans Zimmers best work if not THE best. I was considering what they said more before dude said that about the music smh.

Question: this movie is about 15 minutes longer than the previous one...how exactly is it TOO LONG?

Whats great about art in general is that even people that hate discuss the subject with passion. it even makes me believe that The Dark Knight Rises is better thatn i though, i mean, "highly pointing the bad things, means that there is just too much of the good implied."
@GoJets6412 жыл бұрын
The Dark Knight needs to be gritty, dark and almost overwhelming. This is one man's fight against Evil. The whole idea is suppose to depress you and hold you in that place, then Batman comes and shows you that people can overcome that.

His streak hasn't lasted, but then again it would be unrealistic to think it would last. I still consider Christopher Nolan to be a phenomenal, and fresh director, and I'm looking forward to what he does next.

@noobishmacgaming I dont think enough people understand that Batman is SUPPOSED to be serious and story driven. In all actuality its a very grown up story. Its really not supposed to be "family friendly" at all. Batman and Robin is a disgrace but a lot of people have a preconceived notion that because it is "inherently silly" that its supposed to be like that farce. Incorrect. Therefore I agree with you.

What I appreciated about TDKR is how it wrapped up the trilogy. Bruce Wayne finally gets what he wanted since Batman Begins. I guess what made TDKR disappointing, even to myself, was that we didn't see Batman being Batman as much.

I thought the script was kind of silly near the end of TDK, but I didn't care, I just liked the style, the succession of events, the action, the photography, the music etc... I didn't get why everyone was all AHH, THIS IS MEANINGFUL, I GET IT...I just shut all that out, cause to me it was nothing, just a conclusion like many others. And it turns out I was right, the scenario had been growing thin, and felt confused. This has been confirmed in TDKR

When the Hawaiian shirt dude made the reference to the Batman & Robin Bane Christy looked like she had no clue what they were talking about. You can't dislike the Dark Knight Rises when it is so unbelievably better than the previous Batman films not directed by Nolan.

in the comics the healing of bruce's spine was a whole seperate arc where he goes all over the world to heal his back and then retrains himself.

ok."the individual characters' arcs and the overarching plot developed in perfect rhythm" and "the overarching themes were literally manifested in the main characters during the climax" What do you mean by that?

imagine if the dark knight and the dark knight rises traded places. The production value and technology traded, i think there would be no question The Dark Knight would be better. With rises, the visual effects are amazing, with the dark knight, the acting was amazing. With begins, liam neeson is pretty badass

Remember, art is subjective. Beasts of the Southern Wild is a beautiful film that manages to do amazing things with a small budget. However, I felt the second half was a bit slow and went on a little too long. Like TDKR, I don't believe it's a perfect film. Regardless, TDKR and BotSW are both amazing films that evoke emotion. Call me crazy, but TDKR is just as deserving of being called "Art" as BotSW.

It was a good movie, but after I saw it I can agree more or less with what these critics discussed. It didn't quite meet the expectations having seen the prior 2 movies in the trilogy to Dark Knight Rises.

I know he wanted to move on, and the Movie was huge. But some scenes where kind of out there for realism. The first time we see batman with all those cops coming from all angles. The whole cop vs banes army... the whole bomb thing. He did a good Job, But the first two where Personal. and the stuff I mentioned earlier.The Last act felt like Avengers. It looks fantastic, But the script starts getting silly once you start to notice. Thing just happen. His fist two where game changers. This wasn't.

I kinda agree with them, seeing as how good the dark knight was it raised the bar extremley high for the TDKR but i don't think it surpassed the dark knight, don't get me wrong it was really fucking good but it was really boring at some times, atleast the joker in the dark knight kept us entertained and bane, sometimes i literally couldn't understand what he was saying and they made it so noticeable that they changed his voice last minute, everytime he talked it sounded like a recording

I get a kick out of people that live for the Dark Knight trilogy, and defend it as a mother would her child. The movies are pretty good, but they're still just popcorn comic book movies. There are so many other wonderful films out there that are ignored by the mainstream. I truly feel bad for people who consider TDK films to be classics. They don't know what they're missing.
